    Aftermarket parts monkey here. I will say that since my company started stocking AC Delco and Motorcraft parts in quantity, I have been pushing the DAYLIGHTS out of the OEM electronics - sometimes even price matching the cheaper aftermarkets like Standard or Dorman if I can, to make sure my shops don't get callbacks and I don't have to deal with handling used defective injectors on the daily. Thank you for that lesson.

    That's one reason I love watching your channel, you really know your stuff. At 17:33 you say that EGR doesn't really have an effect in a MAF engine as far as running rich. Spot on. In a speed density system where primary fuel control is done by the MAP sensor, the ECM can't differentiate between the drop in vacuum caused by a stuck EGR and the drop in vacuum by opening the throttle, so it adds fuel in both cases. If air is coming in that's great, but if it's dead exhaust gas all the extra fuel has no oxygen to party with. I've fixed a couple older GM MAP vehicle with stuck EGR valves that were dumping black soot out he tailpipe. Of course on a MAF system the airflow is measured directly and not estimated by the drop in vacuum. That little comment is a small nuance, but it shows complete understanding of both types of systems and I respect it!

    • @brnmcc01
      @brnmcc01 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I wonder if that can actually snowball into a richer and richer situation. Let's assume hypothetically the engine is running super rich, and the EGR valve is stuck open, or more likely jammed open by tons of soot from running pig rich, then that exhaust gas that goes thru the EGR valve is pre-cat exhaust so it's also going to be full of unburned fuel, and definitely no oxygen at all since every last drop of oxygen is going to be sucked up from that fuel. So then the ECM adds more fuel, gets dumped out the exhaust valves into the EGR, back into the intake and gets worse and worse.
      I'd be changing the oil asap after getting this fixed, that oil is gotta be full of excess fuel if Eric can smell raw fuel in the exhaust, and who knows how long it's been running like this.

    • @craigsparton
      @craigsparton 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@brnmcc01 No, it shouldn't snowball. It has less to do with how many hydrocarbons are in the recirculated exhaust and more to do with the EGR gases flooring out the MAP without adding any oxygen. Also depends on how far open the EGR is stuck, most engines will stall if it is fully open unless you are giving it throttle.

    I wasted $26.49 for a set of new generic fuel injectors from eBay because they caused a rich condition. They held pressure, but must’ve just injected too much fuel. The cure was a $62.95 set of remanufactured flow-matched OEM Denso injectors, also from eBay. The 2000 Toyota Echo had been sitting for 17 years and the stale gas really messed everything up. Prior to the new injectors I had to pressure wash the rust out of the tank (but electrolysis was the ultimate fix) replaced the crusty fuel pressure regulator ($12) in the fuel pump cartridge assembly, replaced the fuel cartridge body ($32) because it has an integrated filter, installed a new $85 Denso fuel pump, new $12 strainer and ensured the fuel line was unobstructed. The FP connector had green crusties, which caused erratic behavior but the parts yard didn’t charge me for that. I always declare every little thing at the yard and somehow even though the item is on the price list, they only charge me for the big stuff.
    The EVAP lines were totally clogged so they had to be replaced, the charcoal canister ($156) as well. I lucked out with a $20 generic Idle air control.
    Incredibly that 1NZ-FE 1.5L engine purrs almost silently, I mean after replacing the frozen alternator ($78), the noisy cooling fan assembly ($82), and the loud A/C compressor. Wasted $115 on a generic compressor where the line bosses weren’t even drilled deep enough so I had to shorten the bolts since the new bolts holding the line plugs were too short. That compressor only lasted a couple months and the 3 year warranty was worthless since the seller stopped selling the compressors. The new $305 OEM Denso compressor is far superior to the generics but I had to find a/c line bolts in a parts yard. The blower fan was frozen as well and while I did manage to free it up, it didn’t last long so it had to be replaced ($46)
    Of course then I went all out with a new $55 battery, $10 air filter, $8 cabin air filter, Genuine Toyota thermostat $27, OEM $32 Denso Mass Air Flow Sensor MAF Sensor, Denso upstream $60 and downstream oxygen sensors (looked new but n/c), new loaded front struts & rear shocks ($148), rear shock bellows $22, front control arms/BJ $62, Moog $10 sway bar links, front wheel bearings & outer tie rod ends $59, inner rod ends $22, new $11 axle nuts, rear $54 hub/bearings, new $100 rear coil springs, new $40 brake rotors and $47 drums, one $56 reman caliper, $20 pads, $16 shoes, $15 wheel cylinders, all fluids flushed, Firestone lifetime alignment ($189 after $20 coupon)
    After a mini break-in period, I ran some BG EPR in it and after draining the oil, I put fresh Mobil 1 Extended Performance High Mileage Full Synthetic oil back in along with a Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil Filter, both claim they’re good for 20K miles but 5K is when I do my oil changes. BTW I also changed the ($21 Wix) trans filter twice as well since putting it back on the road and the MaxLife ATF works great.
    A set of $180 eBay Depo headlights and now I have a smooth driving 33 MPG econo box that’s worth a fraction of what I put into it, not to mention my labor.

Or if you got 2 it would make them only $150 each.

    The comment about being from another state where they don't inspect vehicles is accurate. One of my buds lives in Alabama just to the south of me and they don't inspect nor do they test emissions. He currently drives a 2004 Envoy that up until yesterday had no front o2 sensor hooked up, several cut wires under the hood and some other collateral wiring issues from a teensy engine fire. Also, no cat...just a straight pipe. No way would that thing ever pass an emissions test, but down here the good 'ol boys think that's the most awesome thing ever. We're still deep in "take the fuel injection off and put a carb on it" territory. People in NY may complain about the inspections but I don't see them all moving down here🙂

Maybe I'm tighter than bark onna tree, but I'm afraid I would do the same stupid thing and buy it another round of cheap injectors, but only if it was mine. If it was someone else's, I would tell them my thoughts and that it is above my paygrade. I wouldn't even offer to install another set of cheapies, because I don't want to marry it. I just would want to keep my junk runnin. This of course is that I even came to the conclusion it WAS the injectors. I think I would have sent this one down the road to someone smarter than me first. Now I am hypothetically second guessing myself. Let's boil this down and conclude I would do something stupid. Roll tape, second reel. And oh, thanks for the vid, I keep learnin.

      I mean you could research the real oem of the injector and buy bosh/Delphi etc. ones that actually meet oem specs.

    I had a similar situation, someone had installed a used engine, with flex fuel capability, (2012 ?) , and swapping a used 2010 / 2011 non flex set of injectors, made it happy.
    It had 2173444 injectors, needed 1208362's . Drove me nuts for a minute.

    If the injectors were changed with new ones and still no performance changes/ didn’t fix it. I would put the old ones back in. No charge !!
    Then I would look at both up stream O2 sensors.
    Also look for other manifold leaks.
    Good luck

    It now has 366k on it and all ive had to replace is the alternator, brake pads tires and battery. Not bad for a 7k auction junker 😂

    I dont doubt those injectors are bad. I will say the fj704 injectors are listed even on rockauto as "good" with some as costly as 120 each so its hard to know. Ill learn from your advice for injectors only buy oem. Thanks

    • @countryfriedgamer15o
      @countryfriedgamer15o หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fj704 injectors are also sold at O'Reilly's for $200 each. I agree with Eric on most things but not in the case of aftermarket. If someone wants to say all aftermarket stuff is junk I have no problem with that. However to say that aftermarket parts from a auto parts store is somehow better than ebay or Amazon I say no. The parts stores jack up their prices because of the supposed convenience but it's literally the same crap you buy online for a third of the price. Aftermarket is aftermarket no matter where you buy it, it can be good or it can be bad. It's a gamble some are willing to take to save a few bucks. I say if you're going to take a gamble on aftermarket parts then you're best to not pay much for it. I've gotten bad parts both ways, generally if I'm doing the repair on my vehicle I'll buy online. If I'm having the shop do it they buy locally, it costs more money but it saves me from having to do it. When I'm doing it I buy the cheapest parts so if I fail I'm not out a bunch of money on the part. I got two alternators for the price of one at the parts store and still working fine.
