I had the enormous pleasure and privilege to have gotten to know this unique band as early as in 1981 around the time when their impressive single Israel (the first track on this video) and their astounding fourth LP Juju came out. Sensational! I was a 17 year old schoolboy at the time and I have been into music since I was 10, but this was something else! I completely adored Siouxsie and the Banshees, you know. They have kept me young and made me happy. I have played the last two tracks (Paradise Place and Skin) from their epic and groundbreaking third LP Kaleidoscope (1980) on a party with 50 Danes, Germans and Dutch during a schooltrip in the Harz region in Germany in 1982 and totally shocked all the other students with that, poor guys. They never knew what hit them. In that era I frequently wore a t-shirt with a unique picture of Siouxsie Sioux on it. And I had a giant poster with a portrait of Siouxsie in a modest jacket on my wall. I still have a photo of that. I loved their music so much, imagine how excited I was when I heard that they came to play live in De Meervaart in Amsterdam. A terrible surrounding, but nevertheless. I quickly got a ticket and went to experience this marvelous performance. It was unbelievable how warm and enthusiastic the reception of the audience was. It was one big feast and the band strongly reacted on it because of which we all became one large swirling organism. We were totally overwhelmed by the band in their best line-up and at the high of their career in my opinion. It was one of the best gigs I ever went to (over two hundred). Siouxsie's voice is excellent. And the (late) John McGeoch was one of the best guitarists I have ever heard. As I am typing this, I am listening to their song Nightshift (not on this video unfortunately but part of the show), my favorite Siouxsie and the Banshees song and I realize how much the first album Garlands of The Cocteau Twins (1982), sounds like it. They were a terrific band from Scotland. Anyway, I made 13 photo's from this concert, but they aren't very good, I'm afraid. Enjoy the video! I did. Greetings from Holland.
John McGeoch.. Such a charismatic guy. I just love this particular interview with him talking in his Scottish accent. Such a pity he left the band months later after a breakdown in Madrid due to excessive touring.
One of the best live Banshee's uploads. At times Siouxsie can be less animated & there's shows where she sings slightly flat but this has none of that! The way she holds her own foot during the "take 'em by the legs & throw 'em down the stairs" line in 'Spellbound', followed by those sort of drunken kicks! Bet those French teenagers were wondering what was hitting them!! Lucky bastards!! People used to say 'Adam & the Ants' were about 'Pure Sex' but in reality this is! Love her outfit too.
fantastic band, a real creative difference to the norm -amazing guitar and drums, a great bass that is subtle but effective and an incredibly charismatic front woman

I think John was reaching burn out point at this stage although it doesn't show. To me that man will always be a genius. To be honest they were all at the top of their game here
I worked on the PiL North American tour in 1989 and spoke at length with John about his time in the Banshees. It was a tough time for him in many ways. Such a sweet, super talented man. Sorely missed.
I think it's actually the only live version I've seen of McG playing Painted Bird. pretty exciting. I wasn't sure if it was an embryonic version or whether it was a cockup. I'd say the latter as I can't imagine the Banshees playing something they hadn't finished and that their live shows were usually pretty impeccable. Even McGeoch is human.
@@54dermot I'm pretty sure it's embryonic, rather than a "cock up" as the guitar lines work perfectly well in this version. There's nothing musically "wrong". I'm guessing it was simply developed further, reworked & refined into the version that subsequently appeared on A Kiss In The Dreamhouse.
Im not surprised Siouxsie can move like she does her sister was a legit very talented dancer, to me watching siouxsie dance and slither around on stage is like watching an angel seducing and hypnotizing me before she beds me, she is my all time most beautiful creature, ever!!
I love this band. I learned how to play bass, guitar, and terrible keyboards by playing along with Never Mind the Bollocks, Once Upon a Time, 17 Seconds, and the White Album. ...oh, and Radiohead)...
At 7:30, during 'Painted Bird', something either hits her in the face or one of her contacts or part of her costume falls out. You can see it, a small white item at 7:30, which at first she tries to catch, then to see what it is on the floor (suggesting it was something thrown) before going across to Severin's bass amp where she at first spits something out before falling across his amp to collect herself! Severin looks round and she misses several lines of the song. Ultimately, they all carry on & the incident is over-come. Even before this, during the song, something's bugging her & she keeps wiping her face. Anyone know more about what this is (I find these details fascinating)?
at 15.25 she states in the post-show interview that she was vomiting/wretching due to adrenaline. what you see at 7.30 is her first puke and she tries to catch it in her hand...then she keeps on puking 🤮.... you can hear that her mouth is full when she tries to continue singing....ugh....i get a little sympathy pain everytime i watch this or hear this live cut. such a great show...i saw it via VHS bootleg in the 90s and was blown away. HEAD CUT is amazing....
He seems to rock two during the show. The latter one is his Musicman Stingray, but the former I'm not sure of. It looks like some kind of Aria Pro bass based on the headstock, but I've never seen one with two P-bass pickups in it. Either way, sounds pretty good!
34:20 in t.: 'what is your position about being a musician in a cowntry in crisis' ......my dear if the 80's was crisis time damnn wait 2019 and see what the shit crisis means.
u do realize she puked behind the speaker at 8 minutes(watch her hand movements...probably all those emotions--strong singing)...I heard Steve talk about this in an interview...hmmm yuckage passage rpentage thx loveugodbless tj kabbalah matthewshepard madonnalicious
+Noir Desir John McGeoch era live was fantastic. Sadly the production values were pretty bad in comparison to Nocturne. I suppose I'm being a little unfair about this version of Painted Bird as this was an early version!
+You Joker It is an early version of Painted Bird but apart from the the still rather raw structure it pisses all over the Nocturne version. No one can play those guitar parts with the same swagger as Mr McGeoch.
That John McGeoch man, what a strong player.

Cesar Eisma amazing! I can feel your emotion and you remember very well that concert.
Thank you 😊
Same here, kind of, but it started in 1991 and I never saw them
Garlands is a masterpiece.
What a fucking unbelievable guitarist!! There's no guitarist quite like that guy!!
John McGeoch.. Such a charismatic guy. I just love this particular interview with him talking in his Scottish accent. Such a pity he left the band months later after a breakdown in Madrid due to excessive touring.
the guitarrist is a genius
Wonderful John with his SG 1000 Yammy ... get in lad!
It came up on ebay....I think his daughter listed it
McGeogh - such a king! @@Dressagevids

I was there in 1982 and still it' s marvelous to see it back. By far the best gig I saw of the Banshees. Still an awesome band.
Idem
This is incredible!! They are on fire! I saw them at this time. Prime Souxsie and Banshee's!! Takes me back
Wow, John McGeogh... When they were at their best...
fantastic band, a real creative difference to the norm -amazing guitar and drums, a great bass that is subtle but effective and an incredibly charismatic front woman
If you watch the interview after the gig she said it was the adrenalin kept punching her in the throat and made her wretch!
One of my favourite Banshee filmed gigs and and a great time for them love the interview as well with John with them brilliant!

i love this band! sincere music!
Very nice. I haven't seen this concert before. The Banshees at the time of their peak. Love you!!

this is rock HISTORY! my favourite interview of the band ever!
FANTASTICA Y BRUTAL FOREVER MAGNIFICOS ALAIKA SALUDOS DESDE ZARAGOZA ESPAÑA
The Kiss album in 82 is often forgotten but alongside Juju that preceeded it IMHO it is pure genius
Never tire of hearing Switch
Fantastic upload... Great to see the embryonic version of Painted Bird. Thanks!

in a happy house...Greats from Lisboa, Love 4 All
Fabulous! Love the band continuing whilst she's retching (with Steve checking and unruffled about it). Very professional.
Yeah John McGeoch just played on adapting the gap when Siouxsie had to stop.

It's actually De Meervaart, a theatre in Amsterdam, Holland. If I remember it correctly the concert was organized by Dutch music-magazine Vinyl.
I cant wait to see in June.
best band ever...
Thank you for sharing.
Excelente presentación de Siouxsie.....cada vez sorprende aún más con sus atuendos imitados por muchos hasta la fecha.
10:08 to 10:38.....holy crap, nearly 40 years old and still does the job...
One of the best.

Siouxsie is Electric in this performance.
Its 'Switch'..off the the 1st album 'The Scream'.....
🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Painted Bird is a surprise.
:)
At 0:57, I wonder who she is signaling? The guy behind the soundboard to adjust something? Or the crowd?
Reckon it must be the soundboard, maybe up the monitor
+secallen She's signalling the sound engineer to turn her vocals up.
ah- ok thanks
Switch
bellissimi :)
Who's that guy between Budgie and Siouxsie at 16:49?
xsx
Inventerei la macchina del tempo solo per lei
what song is that around the 21:00 mark ?

i wonder what is Severin bass? looks like a yamaha model?

Westone Thunder II bass (version 1 or 2) - I think they were made at same factory as Aria, the headstock design is quite similar
Made by Matsumoku Japan.

Lol. Yeah we didn't know how good we had it
Is Meervart supposed to be in france?? I don't get it...
So...the show is in Amsterdam, and the interview is done by a French guy asking when it will be possible for French kids to see them again. Uhm, okay.
u do realize she puked behind the speaker at 8 minutes(watch her hand movements...probably all those emotions--strong singing)...I heard Steve talk about this in an interview...hmmm yuckage passage rpentage thx loveugodbless tj kabbalah matthewshepard madonnalicious
Great, although in my opinion the sound man has overdone the effects on her vocals.
Painted Bird was ropey..
The version of 'Painted Bird' is not as good as Nocturne version IMO.

Agreed
7:30 area... is Siouxsie okay? I think she's throwing up. :(
She mentions retching (vomiting) in the interview at 15 mins.
+Lynette Rios Maybe they should performe only when Siouxsie is ok!
