- The Pointer Sisters started off with two members, then added a third, then a fourth, soon they were back to three and the new streamlined lineup scored really big with their "Breakout" LP produced by Richard Perry. It really was a long hard road to stardom for the sisters, from being simply a sister act, then as background singers for rock stalwarts such as Tower Of Power. They were the victims of a cruel hoax perpetrated by a representative from Austin, Texas based Zebra Records to record their own album. Once there, they realized there was no studio and no contract. In a panic, Anita called David Rubinson, who had gotten them some work in the past and asked for some help. Rubinson paid for the sisters return fare and set about putting their career together. Jerry Wexler (Aretha Franklin) saw them backing Elvin Bishop in LA and put them in touch with the producer of Jean Knight's hit "Mr Big Stuff". Rubinson found that the collaboration was not working out and pulled them out of their Atlantic contract. Going on to Blue Thumb records President, Bob Krasnow saw their potential and signed them. The sisters first hit was in 1973 with "Yes We Can Can" that went #11 pop and #12 R&B and was a step in the right direction. Opened up to a new sound, radio embraced the women and the Pointers became household names. They regularly charted R&B and Pop throughout the 70's and the early 80's with Perry at the helm and in 1983 released "Breakout" their most successful commercial album with the hits "Automatic", "Neutron Dance" a remixed "I'm So Excited" and "Jump". Just about every track got airplay on R&B radio. Been digging through the vinyl and this one just popped out...

This is one of the top ten "pop" songs of my youth.
One of their best songs, ever. Their 4th biggest hit. At the time this song was released, Van Halen's song of the same name was already on the charts, so Planet Records made the decision to re-title the single "Jump (For My Love)." Released April 14, 1984 reaching #3 on July 7.

I have both versions of "Break Out" on vinyl. The first release contained an un-remixed version of "Jump(For My Love)" and the third track on the second side was "Nightline". The initial release did not contain "I'm So Excited", which had been featured on an earlier Pointer Sisters album. When the second release followed, the version of "Jump(For My Love)" is the one most people remember, with the drum roll at the end as June Pointer sings "You know my heart can make you happy"...and "Nightline" was replaced by a remixed version of "I'm So Excited".
This is my favorite of all of the Pointers' hits. Have loved it from the first day I heard it.
Excellent memories of times that will never come back ... when I was very young and happy, times of love and discouragement. Thank you Anita, Ruth and June Pointer, wonderful members of the pointers sisters.

Here is my story
When i was young my dad used to record from the tv (vh1) and i would listen in the back room to what he was listening to. So one day this song came on and i loved this song so i started performing. All of a sudden i felt someone watching me. I looked over and my dad was peeking around the corner watching me! He was smiling and felt embarrassed so i stopped but i know my dad is watching me as a drag queen perform my favorite songs this being one of them!

I remember those! Weren't they called "HBO Video Jukebox"? Sometimes they actually would be scheduled and other times they would be 15 minute fillers between movies because HBO wanted to start everything on a half hour.
