I've been listening to Frank for over 50 years and had the pleasure to meet him and shake hands. I really appreciate the effort and time put in to this documentary. Not only is it presented in the spirit of Zappa, it informs and entertains. Thanks again for a great viewing experience!
I was finishing up my 3rd tour in Vietnam when Freak Out was released and my wife sent it to me on tape for a little Ampex tape player I had along with a sheet of LSD , when I returned to the world in late 69 my wife was a hard core Mother's head and dancing with Vito's dance troupe at every Mother's show , these were the days before Frank had to have a body gaurd and would interact with interesting people , the split second he saw me he picked up that I had just returned from combat and we had a conversation that lasted 20 minutes easily while he left the band to improvise ,he never forgot me or my wife and autographed everything we ordered from 818-Pumpkin , he's the reason why we were able to see the Yellow Shark concert , for a rock legend it amazes me how many early mother's freaks Frank remembered to the end of his life , at 2 shows we we're brought up on stage to dance and make fools of ourselves for his pleasure and we loved it ,Frank Zappa laughing at something you are doing at his request is the best feeling ever because when you made him laugh he appeared to be even more of a guru than he already was , I miss him alot , when my wife & I saw Zappa plays Zappas 1st tour they opened the show with the song Andy ,and my wife wasn't the only person who cried ,looking around many people were in tears .
26:51 "I don't know how we did it." Zappa rehearsing the band 8 hours a day 5 days a week for a few months before embarking on a tour is how they did it. I heard that Zappa told the band to rehearse the entire set list in reggae. Not that they were going to perform that set list any given night entirely in reggae, but that Zappa just wanted them on their toes in case he wanted them to change up the tempo at his beckon call. *THAT* is how they did it. One of a kind composer and conducter. Viva Zappa!
Met Frank briefly after a concert at the Fillmore East NYC in the summer of 1968, He handed me a foil-wrapped chocolate teardrop which I ate on my way home on the bus afterwards. I have never been the same again. Massive love & gratitude, Frank.
Dweezil really is a beautiful man... When he plays Black Napkins, I just cry ! Frank is my hero... I met Dweezil here in Québec city, Canada, at Halloween where they played ''Roxy and Elsewhere'' from beginning to end... It was MAGICAL !!!
Saw Frank 4x and just saw Dweez tonight! FABULOUS show! There was mostly guys, and l was the only chick that knew all the lyrics, and everything else! Not many Zappa chicks in Vancouver.
Now this is what you can do when everyone is paying his fair share of taxes. FYI this documentary was made by using taxmoney from Dutch taxpayers for showing this (educational)documentary on Dutch public television... I wonder what 'The Donald' would say if he knew about this?? ;))
Super-Excellent Video about Frank Zappa. Thanks. He died way too Young, 52 (his favorite Vegetable killed Him). Hard to say "what kind" of Music He might have been Composing today in 2022.
At 32:01 it makes a point stressing the value of live musicians playing together in a room then cuts to a piece that was realized with the New England Digital Synclavier computer!
Bravo...la sua musica ci accompagnerà per sempre con tante cose nuove che neanche nei viventi è possibile...ha sempre pensato e fatto musica e maledizione è morto troppo presto. FVZ
The Black Page at around 31:00 that is the very solo that made me realise that Frank was a master of the Strat, and was so glad I persavered and ever since that day I have loved Frank. And Zappa Plays Zappa is or was fantastic too until Ahmet the Armpit and Diva put a stop to it!!!
There is no doubt of one thing about this man, once you could get past the initial rejection of what he was doing, he will force you to think and/or to listen in ways you never have before. I love how this ends with the end of the first half of burnt weeny sandwich. It's like how Frank's life was cut off - there was so much more yet to come, if we could just flip the record over..
Thank you! Funny, I've had Only in it for the Money in my collection since 1974. Much appreciate your site, its an absolute gold mine for Zappas music.
@@br1tag I must thank you so much as I love Frank I mean fuckin love his music I read and watch and devour anything I hear see and ur site is far and away the best for Zappa aficionados and it's all the little bits of info u put and it means a lot to read something u didn't no before thanx to the little bits of trivia u wrote to go with the segment!!! So again thanx you from a happy Scouser!!!!
this feels like a collection of archival footage and various interviews, bits & bobs ive seen elsewhere before. I mean its good, just not enough first-hand footage
Finn I know this is an old reply but the song in question is Black Napkins and the best version of Frank's is on Zappa in New York , Dweezils version is even better than Frank's , do a TH-cam search for Dweezil Zappa Black napkins and Dweezil Zappa Torture and be blown away .
Black Napkins is NOT on 'Zappa in New York' 1976, the hot live video of 'Black Napkins' you see @29.00 is on the DVD "Baby Snakes" It's from a Halloween concert at The Palladium, NY in 1977. It exists in various video forms, that one is labeled "Frank Zappa - Black Napkins - Live at Palladium, NY 1977 (Remastered)" th-cam.com/video/4zLjejnuLM4/w-d-xo.html I believe this hot "Muffin Man" video is from that same night, remastered and has the same confusing format breakdown. th-cam.com/video/HGV3yV9q4Q4/w-d-xo.html That concert (audio only) in CD & vinyl as "Live At The Palladium New York Halloween 1977" The original Baby Snakes DVD video was poor quality, but this recent remastering was an immense improvement Audio & Video!
i am offended that 11 people thought they are so cool that they gave this a negative., I have been playing music for over 30 years of my life and if there is one thing that I stand against is another persons opinion having any thing to do what I create. Damn ...its really a pisser to experience negativity in creativity, I guess everyone needs more Cardie B ...and less talent

Actually did perform shows entirely in Reggae.
I was at two of them, and hated it.
@@dhjdhj Sucks to be you I guess. 😉 His use of reggae beats in the '80s were a signature.

Wow. This makes me understand FZ's music so much more. I'm a long-time fan and yes I should have see this such a long-time ago. Great doc.

Wow!! Frank Zappa was such an influnce on my life . I was 16 years old in 1978 when I first saw him in concert and he blew my mind !!
One in a billion!! Have every album this man ever made! RIP

9 Vai's out of 10 agree that Zappa is the most important American composer ever (the 10th Vai is choking on a banana).

thanks for sharing. very nice.
Love the Ian Underwood interview, very rare
I'm glad I watched this video.

Frank Zappa was a great man & a great American.

~ That's an SG, not a Strat.
Absolute genius, especially his modern classical pieces, listen to yellow shark.
Thanks again!

One of the best songs from one of the best albums ever made. But, you can say that about every song and every album by Frank.
