The Best rally game ever is Rallisport 2 challenge on the Xbox and the best one for the PS1 is Colin McRae Rally but this does rank up there with them just for it's simplicity. I have the second and had to buy the first online after reintroducing myself to it
I hate how this game is so terribly underrated.. The physics were excellent, the challenge of taking a turn fast, but not so fast that you flip, it really gave that feeling of being on the edge.. But alas, most people complained that it was too hard, so ever since, we've gotten watered down games that almost drive themselves.. Oh how I wish there were a good modern version of Rally Cross!
jeepmanxj I would have to completely agree with that assessment. People complain about the physics but don't realize that these tracks are brutal. I've never seen a car's suspension react as accurately as it does in this game. The only thing that's not realistic is that these tracks would destroy a car in real life at the speeds that you travel in this game. People just assume this is a straight up arcade racer and it's not. It actually requires some technique and especially speed control. That's why every review at the time of this game's release dogged it's physics because they were constantly flipping their vehicles due to hitting hills and turning while going way too fast.
yeah... sure! I loved this game... but the physics were horrible! and I don't even think it was that hard... I mean I unlocked EVERY car & truck. just horrible physics though... but, I miss this. not the music however... always drove with it OFF

My dad and I would play this for hours every night during the summer. We both were so competitive that we would wager small bets each race 😆. So much fun!!! 🏁 🏎

Nostalgia! Not just the game but the soundtrack brings back so many memories, playing this back in the late 90s as a kid, this and Tony Hawkes introducing me to hard Rock and metal.
Twisted Metal 3 and 4 (developed by 989 Studios, with no involvement from SingleTrac) used Rally Cross's engine. Hence, the realistic vehicle physics in these games.
This is one of the hardest games on the console. The controls were touchy, and the CPU drivers did not seem to care if they hit you or not. Still a fun game, even now.
This was my favourite playstation game! Played it in 1998 in a video games lounge after school together with my schoolmates. Vehicle damage (which seemed quite realistic back then) is what I enjoyed the most. Too bad there is no PC version.
I can't turn off the music when I play this game. It's too awesome. Even though the creaking suspension is just as awesome. I just make sure I play the game really loud overall so I can hear everything :)
Awesome!! This takes me back when I first got my PS1 good times! I had this ridge racer, Jurassic Park, Metal gear solid, twisted metal, and jet moto. Oh and Crash Bandicoot
little bit of a hidden secret on the track at 7:59 turn around and drive the other way and you will still be racing normal just backwards lol, some ppl didn't know about that in this game
oh I missed PSONE so bad, it was the best console ever made, I know today we have better graphics and all that stuff, but PSONE had the most enjoying games I had played , nice video

The 32-bit era was the most exciting to me, and the Playstation stole the show. Rally Cross is an exceptional game. It holds up extremely well even today even though it's graphics have aged.
OldsXCool you´re right I just have forgotten that PS2 allows PSONE games, it´s because I didn´t play Much PS2 I migrate to PC, because here in my country video games are pretty expensive, I m from Brazil by the way, you can see it because of my terrible english hehe
Alsan - Even though I've played in a lot of PS games, I still think it wasn't the best console ever made. I had SNES for a year before Playstation and looking at its games now (I had just a couple back then) I think it was a little bit better. I've played in many titles on the good, old, grey friend of mine - from Resident Evil series to V-Rally :)
in all simulators, the steering wheel on sharp turns must be turned to the end to fit into the turn, but in this game, I remember, everything is the opposite .... you need to be able to prevent the car from turning 90 degrees into the wall at any speed ....
Yeah that's true. Most games have speed sensitive steering so the faster you go the less sensitive the steering becomes so you don't have to have an ultra light touch on the stick to keep from going out of control. The digital steering in Rally Cross is much better if you have a hard time keeping control with analog steering.

the physics on this game were impressive but extremely fiddly, but MAN i think the real problem here is the tight tracks combined with the camera. look at how often you're essentially just turning blind into a corner. like with non-rally cross type racing you get a co-driver to warn you at least, and with proper rally cross it seems to be on tracks that you can like, actually see on. still, a really impressive title given its age

+nuhhhhhhh Well I suppose since they totally blew Rally Cross 2 they probably thought that they shouldn't even bother trying to remake this game. The physics in the suspension of this game is like no other. It's kinda like Wave Race on the N64 as no game to date has matched the feeling of the terrain in the controls. Same with Rally Cross. It was just a stroke of genius that was never to be duplicated.
yea dude! i just dont understand how some game developers go backwards. What really blows is a good game then the sequal is trash because a new company took over or they lost the rights to the previous physics engine and have to start from scrap
I remember crashing the game by doing the long jump in the second course with the best car at top speed and landing in a face to face IN the other car going the other way in face off mode i think it was called. The game froze with my bumper trough the other car! Sweet memories!

Dude same-I’d race my mom, then my sister and I would try to cause the biggest wreck we could haha. It had its flaws and frustrations, and yet it seemed like everyone wanted to pick it up-something you can’t really say for today’s tuning-heavy simcades
Loved this games so much as a kid, my mom got it at a yard sale fir like $5 and I played it probably like 70-80 hours before we were surprised one Christmas with an Xbox

It was the first 3D racing game I ever played, and the first game I played on PS1. I even remember the day when PS1 arrived in the game cafe I used to go to, and this was the only racing game they had haha I was like 8 years old max :-)

Same. I had this on demo disc in 97 with tekken 2 on it also. It came with my ps1. The nostalgia almost makes me want to shed a tear.

bliglum The only complaint I ever had about this game was the car to car physics. Its like everything was on rails.
jeepmanxj The cars did have too much grip, collision detection was pretty terrible too. But I still loved it despite it's flaws.

This game has taught me that when you're upside-down, you just need a couple charges to each side to get back to your feet. A great life lesson.

I remember this being the first time I felt a car in a game had a suspension system. Even arcade games had no suspension at the time.
This games physics engine was apparently carried over to Twisted Metal 3. Never played this game, but the physics were pretty impressive for the PS1!
