Hi. When you open the case the earphones instantly connect to your phone so you no longer need the case from that point. For example I leave the case in the car when I go into the gym. But from what I can tell they are designed to go in the case when your not using them as there is no way to turn them off unless you put them in the case. To test this I turned my phones Bluetooth off which made the beats disconnect but I left them out of the case. I then turned Bluetooth back on a few hours later and they connected instantly but had lost some battery life so they must have been sitting 'on' the whole time.
