Having watched many, many of your videos, I have never once thought you were condescending or patronizing. Your approach to explaining and educating is absolutely fantastic! Your honesty is also quite refreshing and am proud to sponsor you through a membership. As I’m fairly computer savvy, my little cheat is to crank up your Playback Speed to 1.75x; makes you sound very energetic. Thanks for all you do.
This conversation is a great example of how impactful online educators can be when they balance accessibility, professionalism, and genuine care for their audience. Well done, Leo!
I'm a subscriber of your channel precisely because of the education part of your videos. I need to understand what I'm doing when dealing with a computer, and you have a concise way to explain things that makes them accessible, and easy to understand. It's quite empowering. I've learned a lot with your channel and most importntly I now remeber why I love computers so much.
You cannot say that you are sneaking some education! It is the old saying about teaching someone to fish rather than giving him a fish per day... or something to that effect. You are experienced and knowledgeable. A very few people are in the business of imparting knowledge for nothing. Please keep doing what you do. I am over 70 and I am still learning from younger folks like you. Thanks Leo for all you do. Take care.
You talk slowly and explain clearly which is great for a beginner like me. Other channels will skip information assuming that I know what they mean. Well done Leo
On the contrary, Leo....... You're certainly not condescending or patronising in any manner, and always very helpful. Learning how and why something works is just as important as being told what to do it because, the next time we come across a similar situation, we'll have a good chance of being able to solve it ourselves. (I'd actually typed this on my notepad before you then said the same thing). Why does X + Y = Z? Because X is 1, Y is 2, and Z is 3. I loved algebra at school, because it's so freaking logical. Thanks for being here for us, Leo!😉😊
I get both: you're too fast, you're too slow. You're too techie, you're not techie enough. It takes too long to get to the answer / I don't understand the answer. Such is the life of an online publisher. (And, to be far, every online publisher, particularly in tech.)
@@askleonotenboom Thanks for the reply, young man. Let it be known that you are one of my first stops, when I have questions. You don't have very good cooking instructions, but for computers, you're the tops! with me!
Been helping people with pc issues since the xp days, I still learn new things watching you and britech and others. You never stop learning if you stay curious.
I have been on line since 1995, I have learnt a lot over the years, some things the hard way, and I watch your youtube videos to reinforce or remind me NOT to do something.....your videos are a guiding light and presented in a calm informative manner....you deserve whatever rewards come your way from your youtube and website.....thanks for being here and for what you do.......watching from Australia.
Well said LEO. It is like the old saying: "If you want to feed hungry people don't just give them a few fishes but also give them a fishing net and learn them how to fish"... I used to be a professional photographer and I organized workshops. Most frequent question: "how did you do that exactly"? In they age of digital camera's I could retrieve the exact settings but that's not helpful. You must understand the "why" before the ""how" makes any sense. And an earlier comment mentioned "don't assume the reader knows why". I couldn't agree more. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good works - much appreciated. Ed (Rotterdam NL)
Leo, you have found the right balance. You do not waste time with irrelevancies. You make your points, professionally, and in plain-spoken language. I suggest that you change nothing in your presentation. Even if you did, there is no escaping that some folks will find issues. That is just how it is, no matter the channel. You make what you do look easy. That takes talent. Coordinating the timing of your narration with the activities you show via your computer's screen capture, without ever missing a beat, is not simple. You are never condescending. Your audience has a wide range of people, from novices to experts. But some folks behave as if they are your only subscriber. They are either selfish, or unaware of their inconsideration. Or perhaps they do not know how to use tact to convey their message? The tone of a comment is often lost or misunderstood. I agree with most (not all) of your positions on the topics that you cover. I have concluded that where I disagree, it is because you are a generated AI bot, fed by a large language model database. ;-)
You're an awesome teacher. Very clear, very thorough, but at the same time as concise as possible, you cover all the alternative scenarios, I always learn something good. Appreciate you!
Leo, you have managed to explain everything clearly, even to a retiree like me, without ever sounding condescending - with just one exception: passkeys. But passkeys are a combination of overhyped promise and haphazard delivery. So I don't blame you at all.
hello Leo, you are an extremely excellent teacher! I always love your expanations and I always learn a lot of things. And like you say I often can resolve the problem by myself just because you have taught me more than the question only. Many thanks- from Belgium- for your videos!
My whole career in teaching from one room schools to college and polytechnic classrooms can be summed by answer questions with explanations. From looking information up on paper encyclopedias and library card files to the world wide web. In my master's program, I wrote a paper about information overkill. In it, I made the argument that teachers need to be trained in how to teach students how to find and verify information rather than just feeding the students information. I was called an alarmist dreamer. It was 1973, and that professor didn't have a clue what was headed his way.
You are right to try educating with your answers to questions. But the two shouldn't be combined initially. When I ask a question, I want the straight answer to that specific question. The "whys" are valuable, too, but there's a risk of confusing the answer by including too much information for an otherwise simple procedure. First, give me the simple answer. Then go back and explain the reasons. Once I have a clear understanding of what I need to do, knowing why becomes more worthwhile and useful for the future.
Here's the problem with that approach, and why it's just not that simple: too many people stop listening after they think they have "the answer". They'll stop reading the article or stop watching the video. Any attempt at education - explicit or not - is lost.
Although I selected "Do not recommend channel" for this channel, it still comes up in my youtube feed and searches. How do I permanently block "AskLeo!!" I recommend you do a video on that.
1:42 Maybe you explicitly said this (?), but that's the whole point. Once in a blue moon, "Just tell me what to do" is enough, but (counterintuitively) those same uneducated users will frequently give up because they lack knowledge.
Also, when you get the answer with the explonation, you will get a better tools to search the answer to your next problem. And you can describe your next problem more clearly for the professionals.
Microsoft is making sure you never become obsolete! I was completely happy with XP, then was forced to get 7. The change was not that bad. Now I finally was forced to get 10 and am all but totally lost! I will refuse 11 as long as possible until being literally forced to change.
Nothing wrong with your teaching style. I don’t necessarily fully agree with letting third-parties collect data when there are other solutions that don’t require data being collected in the first place though.
Dear Leo, I have a suggestion for a very relevant topic for your channel. These days, Microsoft sends out a notice of Windows 10's final retirement. No more security updates... Subject: What should people do with their often very powerful, and still good, PCs that cannot run Win 11? How can one best extend the life of these machines?
I have several articles and videos on the topic. Here are two (videos included in the articles): askleo.com/the-world-wont-end/ askleo.com/windows-10-end-of-support/
