Love how so many people on YT are like "Jeff Buckley tutorial" but then skip the intro and just play strummed open chords without a capo. So many hacks. You shouldn't be looking for an "easy" way to play this song; its attention to detail and every note is perfect and well thought out. Truly a master piece and if you want to learn it then you need to capture that same creativity to do it justice. You can learn a lot about guitar from playing a song like this.
Some people want an easy song to pick up chicks with and some people want to appreciate the artistry of the song and learn it as it Buckley played it. Different tutorials for different people.
@@JupiterTarts chicks aren't more impressed by the easy way out, amd believe it or not would be less impressed. You're confusing different purposes with different standards of personal excellence
Finally... a lesson that plays it more or less like Buckley himself. as you said, the way he play it varies from time to time, but this lesson is pretty good. Most of the lessons i find here on youtube for this specific song are way to simple, showing the cords, and a strumming pattern. Yes, that is nice for beginners, but there is some people out here as me, who want to learn how the song really goes! And you sir, made a dang good job!
ya thats true i like to play the song as it really sounds.. other people just dnt have a good ear and they think other guitar players are playin it correctly which pisses me off cause its just wrong.. im not a professional player but i have a very strong ear and when the thing doesn sound like in the song i just skip the lessons and try to do it by myself or try to find someone that hits it right.. this dude does it well i just discovered him and im glad he is great.
Seriously. Not everyone is gd beginner. Some of us are willing to challenge ourselves and play something that we may not get on the first try for the simple enjoyment of improving our craft.
I LOVE the dissonance in the intro, and the rest of the guitar parts makes me drool. So darn well arranged. Well done on picking it out and thanks a lot.
I am a newbie, been playing only a little over a year. I decided to make this my first goal song in memory of my mom who passed away just before I started to play. Little did I know how challenging this would be for a beginner! I came across your videos, and I'm going frame by frame - EVER so slowly, but omg it is SO beautiful. The music just sings!
Update? It's OK if you didn't get it :) I've been playing guitar for 20 years and struggle with this. Hope you kept playing if it's something you enjoyed
I gotta say, I kinda get excited when I see you’ve put together a lesson of a song I’m interested in. You shed light on the subtleties and never simplify, which is cool. So, from catching Matt Bellamy solos to learning this beautiful work, and for all the reasons you already know, thanks man. It’s been a pleasure
Your guitar lessons are the most authentic ones when it comes to technicality and the way the artists has played it. Many of us owe you a lot all that I can play is what I have learnt from your channel. Thanks you a ton and more . God bless you.
Great tutorial, I’m so glad you did it right! It’s so hard to find accurate tutorials; they all just go to some boring basic chord progression but this is fantastic, thank you!
Just take it a step at a time. Learn a bit, work on it til u got it then move on. Sometimes trying to learn everything at once is hard unless you already have the tune in your head and know how it’s supposed to sound. I recommend memorizing any song you try to learn so that way when you go to learn you can pick it up easy.
Hey Carl! I love Justin and Marty too but your guitar skills, teaching skillls and accuracy in the lessons are simply overwhelming!! Learned a lot from u!! Thanks for your fantastic work!! Greetings from austria
Such unique note choices in the intro that make it so melancholy. Jeff was a very lyrical player. This song also had a quite complex delay sound.....prolly several units set to different delay times and blended. I knew of Jeff Buckley for a long time but only recently purchased 'Grace'. It has instantly become one of my favorite records ever.
Hey Carl! You're my only guitar teacher for several reasons and help me so much. I'd just like to request a couple of songs that are interesting; Spanish Castle Magic by Hendrix or Hate to Feel by Alice in Chains? Thank you even if you ignore this comment, you're the best teacher
Interestingly in the music video Jeff has the capo on the 6th fret. But in studio recording and live he has it on the 5th fret. Of course you can put in even lower or higher depending on what suites your vocal range.
Jeff could have been down a 1/2 step tuning which would make sense for the 6th fret capo, but then live maybe he plays in standard tuning for the show 🤔
@@flickeringmadness Actually he's in E standard on both recording an music video. If you listen to the sudio recording and music video you'll notice the music video is a semitone higher.
Sublime..excellent...great sound Carl..what sounds / effects are you utilising in your fractal effects ? Your guitar sound is spot on. Apparently he used an Alesis Quadreverb ( Hall reverb ) as the only effect in the Grace recording. cheers
I know this comment is 6 years old, but I wanted to comment incase anyone else is wondering. The only effect Buckley is using is hall reverb. To get close to the tone just use the neck pickup on a strat (or any single coil guitar).
Fantastic tutorial skills! Just subscribed. Thank you very much. Great work. Hope you can find the time to do a tutorial on Jeffs "Je N'en connais pas la fin" some day. Been wanting to learn that one for a while.
i’m slightly confused, he says to play the em7 chord at the beginning but at 5:00 and in the intro, he’s just playing a regular e chord? is the b open or not?
crystal summers have you figured it out yet ? He plays em shape chord 1st and 2nd fret and then actual em chord and and then with 3 finger added on the 3rd fret like.
Great lesson!! I was just wondering: is your right thumb nail your natural fingernail, or do you use a more beefed up fake nail? It’s hard for me to tell from the video. If it is a fake nail, what kind is it (glue on, something they do at the salon, etc)? Was it hard to get used to the feel? Thanks!!
just looked to the side of this video and theres an advert to learn blues from duke robillard, only problem is the songs called texas flood - bad timing sonic junction
+Winter Delacroix check out Carl's website, he has a lot of lessons other than songs including one on pinch harmonics (ala Zakk Wylde) or his other TH-cam page guitarlessons365
Carl, I have a Digitech rp360xp, what's the best way to find the tone settings for your lessons (I.e. pedals and settings used - I know you use a processor as well)? by ear?
in the studio version they blended two reverb pedals together to get that crazy reverb, im using the reverb out of my amp and also the modulation setting on the boss rv5 & rv6 work suuper well for the song
M36class I tell my students to practice the riff five (5) minutes a day. Start _slow_ speed will come. This advice may sound over simplistic. It's not tho'. Always be patient with yourself. The main point is to be accurate and, clean. There's nothing wrong with taking 3 or 4 notes of the solo at a time. Keep in mind ONLY five (5) minutes a day per riff. I'll bet you know people who've played guitar longer than you but suck. The main reason is they tried to play the whole solo without taking time to first be accurate and clean. Signed, someone whose been playing/teaching guitar since 1971
FINALLY a lesson that captures all the musicality of Buckley's version and that is not just chords strumming or picking ! Im very grateful

I'm also searching for live at sin-é version:(

As a beginner with the help of this guy, this was the first full song I learned to play, and it wasn’t easy lol
That intro is everything
I LOVE the dissonance in the intro, and the rest of the guitar parts makes me drool. So darn well arranged.

Finally the actual part from the recording and not some simplified bs 🙏

Love that this guy shows how to play the music as its supposed to be, but he needs to SLOW DOWN.
Jessy Ruiz see, I never really have any problems following along. But I also tried to study the fretboard because I lack musical knowledge
Its better to pause the video and learn
Set the speed to 0.5 in the options menu

The best Hallelujah tutorial on TH-cam, no question. Thank you friend.
Great job!! You sound exactly like Jeff Buckley's version. Amazing!
omg after the first 3 notes i'm sold on you!
Thank you. Finally some Jeff Buckley. Been waiting for this for a long time.
Wow. This was sooooo helpful. Really nailed the vibe and all the intricacies and nuances that make this song great. THANK YOU.
Awesome vid. Would be awesome if you explained all of the picking patterns even if it was just a couple of seconds
Thank you so much for explaining it so clearly !! I was always so lost with tabs and I can finally play this song thanks to you :)
Thanks for nailing that intro. Was looking around for that.
I'm so happy to see you using a strat . I always imagined it would sound a little better on one.
Damn - I was really wanting to hear him play it.

Great stuff, but didn't Buckley play it with the capo on the 6th Fret (I could be wrong).
Can you do a lesson on jeff buckley best song... What will you say

Very nice, man. What are you playing through? Amp/ pedals. You really have the tone dialed in. Is it a bunch of reverb and some tremolo??
Thank you

Well played but not well explained. Closer up on the fret hand would’ve helped.
What are the settings of your amp set to to get that sound from your guitar?
in the studio version they blended two reverb pedals together to get that crazy reverb, im using the reverb out of my amp and also the modulation setting on the boss rv5 & rv6 work suuper well for the song
tks a lot!
Please can you do Animals by Muse I'd love a lesson of that and there's no lessons but plenty of covers on youtube.
What is (1) in a guitar tab??
What does it means?
Please help...
okay I got the song down! but does anyone know what brand his shirt is? I was thinking banana republic but I'm not sure :( please help!!

13:04 what chord is that? please tell me
E7 with the E root note not played so the next note in the chord is G# then D, E and B.
How do you make your electric sound so close to the original? Like tone wise

What guitar is that man and what effects do you use
Can Someone tell me the Amp Settings that he used for this song? Or pedal?
Victoria Melendez lots of reverb on the amp and probably delay on the amp too or a phase pedal
Yeah. Sounds like just reverb, digital delay, and possibly a chorus pedal. Pretty easy tone to get especially if you own a Fender.
Does this sound okay on acoustic guitar?
Do a joy division song
+Brayn Aguilar yeah that one and transmission
+Cade Pickering that school
+Cade Pickering *that too

What settings do you use on your amp/guitar to get that sound?
It's a clean sound with some reverb and a bit of treble
What pedals are you using
what is the guitar you are using
fender- stratocaster
