Am an avid watcher of races but still difficult to pick up in a race ! Fascinating sport 🐎 racing ,under appreciated by the general public 😅😮😂😮
Yes we do train them to change leads & it begins at the start of their training, outside or right lead in the straight aways & left (inside) lead in the turns, it's not hard to teach & it doesn't take much more than a shift in your hands, but all riding disciplines teach them to change leads, & when a horse is resistant to changing leads it tells you that he might be sore, or experiencing pain somewhere in his legs or body
When frankel use to change legs it was game over within a few strides…I love a horse with a big long stride and an instant change of gear 😍😍😍

Sometimes horses have a favourite lead. Mine did always preferred near side lead at full gallop even going left.
