This year should pretty much be referred to as the square enix remake year especially with how much care and professionalism they put in to not only this game but the final fantasy 7 remake as well. It could be a very profitable and risk free venture for them if they decide to remake any of their other classic games. Do you know that each character has at least 2 types of ending, depending on who is on your team? Also depending on who you choose as your main. I have already seen people using Kevin as main, but with different characters on the team, have different story routes and ending for Kevin himself. Selecting who is the 2nd and 3rd member of the team will affect some of the story sequences. You can try this for your self on the Demo too. For one good example, if Charlotte is selected as the 2nd team member, she will join you before you can enter the Cascade Cavern. If you select her as 3rd member, she will join you inside Cascade Cavern as your 3rd member (fastest way to get all 3 members), where you help to save her from falling. If you don't select her as a party member, you will still save her but she won't join you. If as the 2nd member, the main character will be the only one seeing the Priest of Light (Charlotte's grandfather). Where if Charlotte as the 3rd member, the main and 2nd character will go meet the Priest of Light. In both cases, Charlotte will not go meet the Priest of Light. However, if Charlotte is selected as the main character, this the only case that she will go see her grandfather, on top of that, the 2nd member selected will be the one who she lands on and save her when she tries to escape Wendel with the super jump item during her background story. Also sometimes you do get some special link abilities when you spoke to some NPC, so if you just skip speaking to all the NPC without the stars guide, then you will be going to miss out on those link abilities. They also like to hide items, treasure chest, and the cactus in hard to view corners and camera angle view.
As someone who generally dislikes jrpg’s, I’m having fun with this game. My main problems are the weak story, voice acting, and having pretty much no reason at all to go off the beaten path. It kinda made me feel like the game may as well have been level based since between main dungeons are just straight paths with a couple enemies and nothing interesting to discover. Just my two cents, I’m curious to see if they’ll release another because I like what’s here it’s just not quite enough for me.
Honestly if this does well I think Chrono trigger is around the corner. This seems like a test to see if the remakes will do well. From what I am hearing and seeing this game will do well.
Agreed with you on this review! The remake is so good! To add to what you said, I also love how the menu that allows you to level up your stats tells you where your spells and skills are. Even if it didn't though, this is still a great game!
Just played through the demo, and I loved it! I have bought too many games recently, and reached my quota. I'll have to wait a month to get this. It seems to have a ton of replay value. The first couple of hours was all from The main characters perspective. I chose Hawkeye/thief. They planned to invade a country. Whose country? None other than the character I chose second after hawkeye. That's just the start! I have to buy & play this game asap!
I fell in love with this game as a 15 year old discovering emulation. The game music captivated me. I'm embarrassed to say that I have never fully completed it but now I'm motivated to finish both the original and remake.
You see the other characters in the original game in different spots in a town. Then again in the jail of the beast King’s place. I’m playing the original. After I beat that I want to get this one. I like English so that’s what I’ll be playing it on. It’s cool to see this remade. I’m actually playing the original first on the collection of Mana. I want to play it and beat it at least once before I buy the remake to appreciate it. It looks like I’ll appreciate this more than the FFVII Remake. Even thought FFVII R was cool it deviates from the original plot at some points. This one however keeps things to the original which I can definitely respect.
Awesome review! I'll be checking this game out thanks you. From reading the comments it seems like you're channel is getting more shine. That's great, man! I've been following you for a while, and you definitely deserve it - one of the highest authorities on both new and old RPGs TH-cam has to offer.
I never played the original but I watched a longplay of it on TH-cam and when I saw this game coming out, I told myself I want to play this and omg when I did I fell in love with it. Of course I'm going to play it multiple times to beat the crimson wizard, goremand and Belladonna. My first playthrough I'm doing Duran (light path) , Angela (dark path) and Charlotte (light path). That way I have a close combat attacker, ranged magic wielder and a healer to heal both of us
I remember from the original game review that the menu's, specifically the items and equipment ones were tedious. Was hoping to see of it was improved in this version. What are your thoughts on this?
This remake had amazing demo had as much fun as playing on mania collection definitely picking up a physical copy ASAP. Seiken Densetsu 3 deserves a remakes updating battle system was big bonus for me personally.
@@spawncalibur1022 They probably didn't have the budget for bigger names. Personally, I don't think they needed to hire VAs at all. The Japanese dub is already very good and this game is mostly going to appeal to JRPG fans anyway.
It’s a very “safe” remake, as most stuff outside of aesthetic and battle system remained relatively same. It brings back a lot of nostalgia but only attends to a niche market
putting this and FF VII Remake in relativility near in time seems like strategy to see what should Remake be done: Completely change it, or just update the graphic and gameplay and keep every story the same.
@jvalex18 Not a fair comparison at all. A remake of, arguably, the most pivotal RPG ever released. vs. A remake of a game that came out 25 years ago (only in Japan) in a franchise that has been, essentially, dead in the west since 1993ish.
in my opinion unless you are getting extra goodies with the physical copy or are thinking of selling it at some point i would ask why not go digital. i myself am buying trials of mana on steam.
Derek you have the best reviews, I love your channel and content so much, never stop making this excellent content, it’s so comfy and informative but also great to get a feel for your personal tastes. I had been curious about Trials of Mana but it was your review that completely convinced me. I’m 2 and a half hours in so far, playing as Angela with Kevin as companion 1 and Riesz as companion 2. Loving the game! Gonna get the collection of Mana on my girlfriends switch in the near future so I can play these classics, I also loved tuning in to your Seiken Densetsu 3 classic streams. Cheers Derek
That map-marker actually goes a long way toward removing the tedium of trying to figure out how to get from point A to point B, or to find that one NPC you had to talk with to move the game along. You can turn it off though if you don't want to feel railroaded. :)
Some places in the original were pretty confusing to navigate....looking at you dragon maw. The mini-map as well as the ability to look around with the camera help a lot to make the dungeons far less confusing.
I'd love to see some sign of life from the Lunar series! I've recently been playing Trails in the Sky which is very reminiscent of older Game Arts titles. I'd recommend checking it out if you haven't already! :)
I just got the remake for my birthday. I _have_ the original on my computer, but I've only ever played it a handful of times and never got very far. Currently, I'm in the endgame of Angela's story (she's always been my favorite character) in the remake and I play it for hours on end. Yeah, this is kind of a perfect remake. Makes me want a Chrono Trigger remake in the same vein. I mean, who'd have thought Trials of Mana would get one, you know? Maybe one day we'll get a 3D remake of one of the greatest RPGs ever made.
Thisis a must play for me and I'm hoping the lil' cactus cameos would bring pople's attention to Legend of Mana, my personal favorite of the series due to its music and art style, and who knows? Maybe Square might bring it back.
I was somewhat pessimistic seeing the early footage for this game, so I'm pleasantly surprised to learn that the absolutely awesome Seiken Densetsue 3 has a great remake! Thank you for the review, by the way, it's appreciated!
A detailed review makes me want to check out your other videos. I had to pop the subtitles on to pick up the Ys VIII reference (I tried googling ‘Eas 8’ and it pulls up everything from Cane sugar to East Asia lol) - I’ve never heard of the Ys VIII game and consider myself a Mana fan so maybe I’ll check it out... I think it’s been mentioned already, but the Switch version runs at 30fps. Great video :-)
Question if I wanna do the paired story of Kevin and Charlotte can I choose Kevin first and still get the full experience? Or do I have to pick Charlotte first?
@Mountain MGTOW I don't get this sentiment at all. That wouldn't diminish or delete the original in any way. Right now you have Snes FF6, if a remake comes ( which it eventually will) you will still have Snes FF6
@@SuperDerek oh yeah. It doesn't necessarily have to be full 3d either. The octopath style would be a great way to showcase the painter quality of the amano character designs.

Got platinum and now I can play with my good old SNES all girls dark setup (Riesz (main | DD) - Angela (DL) - Charlie (DD)). It's enjoyable to see that Angela is making fun of Charlie in some certain moments, that doesn't happen in the original :p As a fan of the SNES SD3 I can really say that this remake is great, and tbh I don't have the urge to play the original anymore; maybe for real nostalgica someday in the future. For the voice acting: The japanese VA is really good and is fitting without exceptions, the only problem I had is the translation at some points. Some names are different (i. e.: Count Jagard -> Malocchio, Father of the Winged -> Winged Defender, Nikita -> Niccolo, and some others) and thats not a thing because of the previous fan translations, they say these names in the jp audio too. Sometimes the translation of sentences are somewhat off.. yes, the context is correct, and it doesn't change the story, but it's weird sometimes when you can translate most of the japanese for yourself =) Especially if you have Charlie as 3rd character with you, after the liberation of Rolante (Laurent) in the throne room: She says something completely different to that translation... Overall you can really say it's a remake that can serve as an example for "How remakes should be done" :3 Some ppl want a remake of SoE, and yes, that should be done. But please with a char creator, the main hero is so blunt, even the dog has more personality :p So it doesn't matter if the original protagonist takes his place or some other random guy/girl :>
I got a few notes to add 1: I find Charlottes English voice to much much more tolerable then the Japanese. For something which is suppose to sound baby-ish and annoying, it comes off more like an accent from Jersey, where the Japanese actress does a fine job as well....but its REALLY standard whiny baby which drives me nuts in most anime which also features that same style of baby talk. Almost odd to say, but Charlottes english voice actor is one of the more spot on voice actors when it comes to consistent and proper cadence. 2: I do hope you do a much further in depth review and comparison of the game when its hits full retail. I'm still waiting for the 24th to play... I'll have to settle with my 20+ hours in the demo at the moment
Loved the game, but unless you're locking onto enemies during battle; the camera is kinda crappy. A lot of blind spots. Unless I'm missing something in the settings. Still had a great time with it.
That's cool I'm thinking buying the game. How are the post game contents? Is there anything to do after finish the main story? Like, a gauntlet mode or boss rush mode or post game dungeons etc?
I haven't been able to dig into the post-game content yet, and unfortunately reviewers are unable to speak about it from what I understand about the embargo.
Thanks mate I have been researching this for a while and found the it really has lots of post game content! But I just really wish they add a boss rush mode that let me fight any boss at any time in the future bc that's is the real fun part of the game imo.
I speak Japanese. I can attest that the original audio also has it's weaker spots. However, not with the main characters themselves. They're well acted and the voices match. But so many NPCs have distractingly unfitting voices. At first I was a bit annoyed at Angela's voice too but she grew on me. Not sure if I just got used to it or if the seiyuu got more into the role eventually. Last but not least, what the English translation did to Charlotte is a crime, Jesus christ. She has a cutesy and childish way of speaking, but they really overdid it compared to how she comes across in Japanese. Characters like Kevin and Duran come across as a lot less stiff in the original audio too but their English delivery isn't terrible.
New subscriber, can't believe i missed an rpg guy too all this time. Omg I hate you now, i want this game so bad. Its not like i have an 1800 game backlog on steam and i just got the turbografix mini today too =/
I never got a chance to play the original but I did pick up The Collection of Mana for my Switch. I think I'll still try to play the original then the remake. The old school pixels just get me right in the feels. Great review Derek!
"I think I did spot a few subtle differences." Then a mustard commercial pops up. Yeah, I didn't think the original had much to do with mustard either. Jokes aside, it sounds like I should pick this game up. I'd like to play the original first, but who knows when I'll bother getting a Switch.
I haven't 100% the game, I only was able to beat the main storyline, and that took about 30 hours. I think if you wanted to collect all the treasure chests, and get all the Li'l cactus sightings and extra stuff, I think it'd take a bit longer than that. :)
@@SuperDerek Thanks, i guess by doing the different storylines i would get much more playtime, i want to get either trials of mana or persona 5 royal and the length matters for me, since they are both great games i think i will go with p5R and grab trials whenever i can, btw i enjoy very much your videos being the jrpg sucker that i am, keep giving us more jrpg recommendations and info!!
I was a bit hesitant about this remake mostly because of the camera, since this feature is one of the Achilles heels I always nick pick on 3d games (I am mostly a 2D guy), but after watching your review and of course being yourself a RPG Connoisseur I think I just changed my mind and might buy it as soon as I can.

Sorry if it came across that way. I meant to say that the review contains spoilers from the first hour of the game, and it also contains footage of some cut-scenes.
I'll have to pick this up eventually, but I still like the original graphics a lot more. Some of the best visual direction on the super Nintendo. I agree that the original version conveyed the story pretty weakly, so I'd like to see how that improved

Honestly if this does well I think Chrono trigger is around the corner. This seems like a test to see if the remakes will do well. From what I am hearing and seeing this game will do well.
Dude, I would die if they announced it. xD
@@SuperDerek SAME! honestly who do we need to talk to about this? haha
Hope they get to remake the Wild Arms series as well!
I'm hoping for either Chrono Trigger or Treasure of the Rudras.
that would be godlike
I was hoping you'd have a review of this and I'm soo happy you did!
The thief dude was doing Michael Jackson moves! Lol! Awesome!
This one however keeps things to the original
which I can definitely respect.
Awesome review! I'll be checking this game out thanks you. From reading the comments it seems like you're channel is getting more shine. That's great, man! I've been following you for a while, and you definitely deserve it - one of the highest authorities on both new and old RPGs TH-cam has to offer.
Thanks Eric! :)
I really couldn’t get into the original Trials on SNES as the combat felt too clunky, but the remake is absolutely incredible, I loved it.
That way I have a close combat attacker, ranged magic wielder and a healer to heal both of us
Hell ya please make more discussion vids. Your one of the best talkers on YT.
I've played the demo yesterday and finished it in 2 h, game is really fun and runs at 120 fps on pc.
Flo Lucian hey check out my let’s play of trials of mana if you have a chance! trying to grow my gaming channel lol 💪🏾🔥
Great video Derek.
I always enjoy your reviews SuperDerek!! and i'm also super excited for your trails in the sky review!!!
I remember from the original game review that the menu's, specifically the items and equipment ones were tedious. Was hoping to see of it was improved in this version. What are your thoughts on this?
Oh man no comparison. It's way more streamlined.
This remake had amazing demo had as much fun as playing on mania collection definitely picking up a physical copy ASAP. Seiken Densetsu 3 deserves a remakes updating battle system was big bonus for me personally.
I played with the English voices at first until I rescued Lumina who sounded like the office intern. After that it was Japanese voices all the way.
@@spawncalibur1022 They probably didn't have the budget for bigger names. Personally, I don't think they needed to hire VAs at all. The Japanese dub is already very good and this game is mostly going to appeal to JRPG fans anyway.
Waiting for my Switch collection to arrive this week, very excited to play ;)
Stomps all over Balan Wonderworld because it at least did a better job at being a Disney animated movie than that disaster of a game
I like both so i buy both thats the only important thing for any gamer. Buy what you like
@jvalex18 Not a fair comparison at all.
A remake of, arguably, the most pivotal RPG ever released.
vs.
A remake of a game that came out 25 years ago (only in Japan) in a franchise that has been, essentially, dead in the west since 1993ish.
Thank you for playing this with the Japanese audio.
I was worried about the combat but this seems promising.
I might pick this game up later, but money is limited at the moment so hopefully its on sale by the point I have enough for it
Totally understandable! Lots of people are in uncertain financial circumstances these days.
Oh you showed me the surfing turtle I dont need to buy the game anymore :p
Woah you got one early? That is so sick for you man. Congrats.
Thanks!
Can't wait till Saturday. Why Saturday? Because I want a physical copy, and Saturday is when I do my shopping.
in my opinion unless you are getting extra goodies with the physical copy or are thinking of selling it at some point i would ask why not go digital. i myself am buying trials of mana on steam.
Great review. Final push I needed to buy this. Just finished Ys VIII, needed a new challenge.
Really enjoyed Trails of Mana on Switch great game, RPG's are my go to genre. Great channel !
Thanks man! And thanks for watching! :)
Fantastic review ! Im really looking forward to this release
I love that there's a mini-map. Super helpful. Great review...thanks! ❤️
Dang playing this makes me wish for a Lunar Eternal Blue remake done in the same format and battle system.
I'd love to see some sign of life from the Lunar series! I've recently been playing Trails in the Sky which is very reminiscent of older Game Arts titles. I'd recommend checking it out if you haven't already! :)
SuperDerek RPGs I’ll definitely put them on the top of the list!! Thanks SuperDerek love the channel, keep it up and stay healthy 👍🏼
Thanks! You too dude!
6:16 That basically sums up a lot of fans who compare sub to dub or Japanese to English.
Speaking of it, there is a remaster that will be arriving in June 24th for the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Steam/PC. So, your wish is granted.
Holy ghost I feel like it's been forever since we got an actual review from you
Holy smokes amazing! And this is going up before release!!!
Would have loved to have seen you stream this game.... but I get it. Awesome work on the review, you've confirmed my feelings while playing the demo.
I was somewhat pessimistic seeing the early footage for this game, so I'm pleasantly surprised to learn that the absolutely awesome Seiken Densetsue 3 has a great remake!
Thank you for the review, by the way, it's appreciated!
There is a free demo where you could play all the characters.do try it. you wont be disappointed
Thanks Leigh! I hope you enjoy what you see! And Ys VIII is a great action RPG, so definitely check it out if you get a chance! :)
Question if I wanna do the paired story of Kevin and Charlotte can I choose Kevin first and still get the full experience? Or do I have to pick Charlotte first?
It doesn't matter
This game is fun!!!
2 words: PLAY IT!
I wish Square would update FF6 like this. No huge budget needed. It would definitely sell better than any of the Mana series.
That could be super cool! Either that, or maybe even just giving it the Octopath treatment would be really nice. :)
Looks like YS and Ni No Kuni has some fierce competition..
I hope legend of mana will get a remake too..
sandaadhitag hey check out my let’s play of trials of mana if you have a chance! trying to grow my gaming channel lol 💪🏾🔥
Hmm, speaking of it, wait for June 24th. It's a HD remaster though.
Can't wait to get my copy!
And if anyone who doesn't know and in the US. Walmart currently has Trials of Mana(Switch) for only $40 👀
Jose Rachi hey check out my let’s play of trials of mana if you have a chance! trying to grow my gaming channel lol 💪🏾🔥
It's great to see your back with new reviews I do hope you'll review The Last Remnant my most favourite all time RPG of all time I absolutely love the game and so sad that it is not available for backwards compatibility on Xbox One sadly I still have the game regardless because it truly is an amazing game.
Thanks! I've still been making reviews, just only about once per month these days. Couple weeks ago it was the original Trials of Mana on SNES, and before that it was Secret of Evermore, and Super Mario RPG! :)
@@SuperDerek you are also very much welcome to use my Orchestra Remixes of the old SNES themes and I do promise you that my remixes literally do stay true to the original theme in terms of its structure its like finding an old run down house that has some charm to it but desperately needs some restoration to breath new life into it and make it look like a new house but still being true to its original structure you can either listen to them and if you like them you can purchase them from my bandcamp page or if you want I can send you the remixes free of charge with only one request that you do mention my channel and perhaps showcase some of the remixes I have done that you like or love in your video I will greatly appreciate it and also you are the one that got me interested in the game Terranigma your review gave me all the necessary information I needed to motivate me to play the game and I love and I am proud to inform you that I have made many remixes of themes from Terranigma like Beruga's Lab or known as Laboratory and my personal favourite Peaceful Ports
Got platinum and now I can play with my good old SNES all girls dark setup (Riesz (main | DD) - Angela (DL) - Charlie (DD)). It's enjoyable to see that Angela is making fun of Charlie in some certain moments, that doesn't happen in the original :p
As a fan of the SNES SD3 I can really say that this remake is great, and tbh I don't have the urge to play the original anymore; maybe for real nostalgica someday in the future.
Overall you can really say it's a remake that can serve as an example for "How remakes should be done" :3
Some ppl want a remake of SoE, and yes, that should be done. But please with a char creator, the main hero is so blunt, even the dog has more personality :p So it doesn't matter if the original protagonist takes his place or some other random guy/girl :>
I got a few notes to add
1: I find Charlottes English voice to much much more tolerable then the Japanese.
Playing the demo right now and of course listening to your opinion as always
Always appreciated! 😁
I am enjoying trials of mana (original) immensely after your review of that game. Can't wait to play the remake!
Loved the game, but unless you're locking onto enemies during battle; the camera is kinda crappy. A lot of blind spots. Unless I'm missing something in the settings. Still had a great time with it.
I'm so getting this, I love my good remakes, specially from my favorite rpgs!
There's a lot of post-game content! Not to get into any spoilers but trust me, you'll enjoy such content a lot. And there's also a New Game +
Thanks for the review, I'll be buying this later today!
Have fun! :)
Awesome review as always Derek. Hopefully my copy arrives on friday :3
New subscriber, can't believe i missed an rpg guy too all this time. Omg I hate you now, i want this game so bad. Its not like i have an 1800 game backlog on steam and i just got the turbografix mini today too =/
Enjoyed the review. I am now tempted to give it a try!
I never got a chance to play the original but I did pick up The Collection of Mana for my Switch. I think I'll still try to play the original then the remake. The old school pixels just get me right in the feels. Great review Derek!
Excited to pick this one up! Never played any of the Mana Series and have always heard good things.
"I think I did spot a few subtle differences." Then a mustard commercial pops up. Yeah, I didn't think the original had much to do with mustard either.
Jokes aside, it sounds like I should pick this game up. I'd like to play the original first, but who knows when I'll bother getting a Switch.
Is DPS checks mostly found in MMO's so this battle system is unique for a SP game, or are there more examples of SP games with DPS-checks?
Hmm, I can't really say off-hand if there are other single-player games with that mechanic, but it meshes really well in this release, for sure! :)
I am really excited to play this game. The demo already hooked me.
It’s very reassuring that it will continue to wow me
thanks for the review - just pre-ordered it :)
Awesome, I hope you have a good time with it! :D
Thanks for the review.
Thank you for watching! :)
Charlotte: THIS GAME IS WERRY WERRY GOOD!
FireBomberBassist hey check out my let’s play of trials of mana if you have a chance! trying to grow my gaming channel lol 💪🏾🔥
Hey Derek how long would the game be to complete 100%??
You sold me. I’m moving it up 2 spots in my backlog lol
Back in the Day Gamer hey check out my let’s play of trials of mana if you have a chance! trying to grow my gaming channel lol 💪🏾🔥
I hope you enjoy it man! I ended up having to put both camera controls to inverted, personally speaking. :)
So happy I found your channel! Awesome review! Great points about everything Iwanted to know. Ive loved this game since 95 and cant wait to play the remake tomorrow. Got a bit thrown off when I saw "bigger" sites giving it 60-70 but you seem to have exactly the same idea about RPGs that I have.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hell yeah. I'm waiting to get my order from Amazon. I loved playing the demo. I'm gonna play Hawkeye, Angela and Reiz... will likely go Dark Classes.
I love how you say all the footage is during the first hour of the game, and then we see boss battles at high level 40's and 50's, lol.
Considering we have the second and third game in the Seiken Densetsu trilogy, it'd be fitting if they did the same remake release for the first game.
They have Adventures of Mana for the PS Vita. Its digital only. But it is remade with graphics similar to the Secret of Mana remake
Have you checked out Sword of Mana? It's a remake for the GBA, and was pretty fun. :)
Very nice review.
One "note", I believe the game runs at 30fps on the Switch. But it surely looks beautiful.
