The reason Sonic's referred to as the Knight of the Wind is because the other knights ask who he serves. Sonic tells them he has no master and that he's as free as the wind. Being the Knight of the Wind means being free to do as you please which, for Sonic, means doing the right thing no matter what the Knights of the Round Table deem proper or chivalrous. Glad you brought up Black Knight. While it's not the only game to associate Sonic's freedom with the wind, it's definitely a strong example of it done well
Some people like to theorize that Sonic and Blaze are parallel versions of each other. if that's the case, that adds another neat layer to Sonic's wind association. A gust of air can snuff out a small flame, but it can also feed the fire, kinda like how Sonic helps Blaze open up more in their initial meeting. As for the particle effects we see in Frontiers, I kind of just assumed that that was supposed to be chaos energy, or whatever is supposed to be in the rings canonically. Considering how massive sonic's arsenal is by now, I doubt they're gonna just retcon anything wind based sonic does, but I do agree it serves him better thematically. As another commenter said, seeing the abilities unified and having Sonic compared to a storm could be really cool. Last thing I wanna mention, I'm pretty sure Sonic has a bunch of different wind based moves in Battle, and considering Frontiers' focus on combat, I think it'd be really cool to see some of those return in future games. Just some things I wanna say. In sonic battle, he has some wind moves. Same in frontiers, like the the sonic boom and cross slash. Also, pretty sure that in some comics ring energy and chaos energy are the same thing. Makes sense with how you turn super.
In the movie he does actually use the wind to make tornadoes to blind and disorient Robotnik but I would like to see an even balance of both elements since they both represent him really well!

You forgot two instances of Sonic using wind. First is in Sonic Rush, where (when you're playing as Blaze) Sonic gets a special wind tornado move. Second is in Sonic and the Secret Rings, where every ability in that game is tied to wind, fire, or darkness. This was apparently important enough that SEGA had to reflect it on the boxart with wind, fire, and darkness all circling around Sonic.

Honestly wind was cooler because it made Sonic different from other speedsters that typically use electricity. Wind also fit with Sonic's character more.
A few weeks ago I saw a tweet from a person named @banana_queen that said: "Personally I like what Frontiers seems to be going for and have Sonic incorporating a bit of both. Let him be the entire storm. He is a force of nature. Something you cannot contain or control. He’s what you get when the stars collide." I think this is a good interpretation of Sonic's abilities and it really makes sense (at least to me). :)
I mean winds and electricity are both associated in the form of storms. That's a pretty easy way to wrap it together nicely. He's not just electric or just wind, he's a free wild storm.

The reason why sonic was called the knight of the wind in sonic and the black knight was because of the cutscene before the blaze fight. Blaze asks who his master is, sonic says he has no master other than the wind that blows free, in the post fight cutscene, sonic is officially knighted as the knight of the wind. That’s definitely the biggest depiction of his wind association. Also black knight sonic is underrated the writing is so good lol
wind actually makes him look FAST and athletic but electricity somehow makes him look slower and it looks like he’s just using some power up to speed up it looks much less impressive
similarly, in secret rings, you can customize abilities to change how sonic controls the abilities are organized by wind (speed oriented), fire (attack oriented), and dark/hell (soul gauge oriented)
I think it would be cool if Sonic were also repented as a water elemental. Think about it: - Water is his greatest weakness as he can't swim, so it'd be pretty cool from a narrative standpoint of him having literal control over his greatest weakness/fear. - Water is associated with sleekness and fluidity, which fits with his acrobatic nature - And water is almost always associated with the color blue, just like Sonic
I love the the wind element in sonic. And the idea of him having aerokinesis. It gives sonic and blaze that fire & wind dynamic, with wind going horizontally while fire raises vertically.
I remember seeing that tweet about choosing wind Sonic (Sonic from the games) or lighting Sonic (Movie Sonic) some people and I said we should combine both of them to make Sonic a storm. I also can't find the tweet.

Here's another little point to get across. Sonic is using his Speed to create those strong winds. Not using innate abilities to control the wind itself like an Airbender. All he's doing is spinning fast enough that he's practically throwing really powerful gusts of wind or sonicbooms at his enemies. The Lightning like ability is more because, as Sonic himself, is because he's a "Ball of Super Energy".
Very cool video that I haven't yet seen anyone else do. My quick two cents on the matter is the following: they are all simply the results of Sonic's tremendous speed. Wind comes from Sonic's movements, while electricity is his potential energy physically manifested into kinetic energy, again, when he runs. They aren't powers Sonic has, but rather, he generates them.

It does make sense considering Sonic is very capable of harnessing chaos energy which is also potent energy manifested itself. And the wind does make sense due to his speed. It'd be cool if we see him use both skills similarly to Flash.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Surge from the IDW comics. To me her use of electrokinesis sort of felt like a way to subtly deny the idea of Sonic being electrically powered.
My knowledge of the comics largely extends just to whatever I see on Twitter BUT I've seen a lot of Surge content. Since I don't read the comics I don't think it's something I had the knowledge the comment on. Do you think it's worth getting into them?

Both. Both is good. As someone else commented, he could unify both and be considered a storm considering that wind and lighting do both come from heavy storms. And also taking into account of Sonics power and physical attacks, he does strike like a storm.
I find it somewhat nice how in Frontiers Sonic seems to be able to use Lightning and Wind in tandem. The Lightning Static from Power Boost while keeping his wind like Abilities in his attacks.
I mean, you missed many examples of sonic using wind for battle. He actually has a whole boss fight regularly creating tornados in sonic rush against blaze.

I love wind abilities but I’ve been seeing a lot of wind based main characters Naruto, Aang, Yuno, Kazuma Yagami Wind ability based characters have a special connection with Japanese writers, But the Electricity based characters are often used as side characters, (mostly black characters for some reason, no hate just curious ) And as someone who loves Electricity or lightning based elemental powers in fiction, I absolutely love the fact that Sonic is now electric blue ball, Always wanted this and finally got it, may it never change
screw it Sonic can do both, now make him incircle his enemies with not only super fast wind but mix in electricity to make an electric tornado, that'd be dope
Secret Rings and Black Knight had a lot of wind effects for the abilities you could obtain as well, and Sonic Heroes had the Blue Tornado (which btw Cyloop can easily come back without needing to be a weird lingering connection to cyberspace, cause everything cyloop does was done just the same by Blue Tornado)
AAYYEE THANKS FOR THE SHOUT OUT MAN! really interesting video, yeah when the first movie came out, I was really confused why sonic had electricity powers and at the time it kinda pissed me off cuz he was basically the flash at that point. but I eventually just got use to it but I believe that sonic's electricity was truly just a lack of knowing what was accurate to the source material and the creators simply used a stereotype of speed being associated to electricity in a lot of fiction. I mean the first sonic movie's hype honestly felt like it was simply cuz of sonic's redesign because the rest of the movie pretty much has nothing to do with sonic or his world and the movie at the time was being made by people who didn't really care for sonic if you really think about it, and the redesign was like a last minute saving grace, after how successful the first movie was, it goes to show people still love this character which is why they went all out in the second movie and had more elements in the games be included but since they already established sonic had electricity powers I don't think it would make sense for them to go back and change it to wind. but yeah pretty weird how this concept is being tied to the games now, I wonder if they will continue to do this.

There is a game where sonic generates both wind and lightning. And its sonic heroes, the wind usage is very open with the blue tornado, rocket accel and a level 3 homing attack. And he generates lighting rings during the team blast. He also does the same thing during the lightspeed attack. Also isn't insta-shield from sonic 3 an electric zap? Sure looks like it.
I think he can have both. He can have the ability to manipulate wind due to his speed, while his power source is the electricity circulating through his body.
I love how in Sonic Rush, after hearing so much about him without even meeting him, Blaze asks Cream to describe Sonic. After thinking about it the only answer Cream gives is "He's like the wind"
my personal headcannon is that it's a new ability developed through constant use and exposure to the chaos emeralds, kinda like how super sonics eyes were green then that became his base form eye colour, some kidna chaos radiation causes these changes
I also feel like it's because of chaos energy Sonic has been exposed to this energy so much that it may have became part of him. That could be also a reason for him to get powerful enough that he was able to defeat Perfect Chaos in his normal form instead of relying on the emeralds and makes his connection with the powerful gems way easier
Also, to note, Japanese folklore ties wind and electricity together. and a lot of games and media tie both wind and electricity together as elements of storms based off the Japanese gods, Raijin and Fujin. So Sonic's basically the storm that is approaching. Provoking, Black clouds in i-/shot
I don't think there is a crisis. He still uses wind primarily in his attacks in Frontiers. Electricity just comes from his speed's energy. Electricity is generated by harnessing light energy from the sun. The faster Sonic runs, the more energy would be produced in order to turn into electricity. Sonic is always metaphorically connected to the sun.
Actually he could be both cause sometimes storms (which is wind) can be charged with electricity so technically Sonic is the blue storm that learned the power of electricity like real life and fictional storms! Or we can say that he's fast as lightning and we just felt the wind of his speed
The Electricity in the movies seems to be an effect for Chaos energy as Knuckles who is also strong has an electrical effect as well. Tails on the other hand does not display this despite having super speed as well

Ngl, i thought you would have mentioned Sonic Heroes cause the speed type characters like soinc are shown to easily make tornadoes and have moves like the rocket accel and homing attack having air bases elements when levelled up and in certain situations
"Do I look like MatPat?" Yes. :P Man's really talked about Sonic having wind as an element without mentioning EVERY SPEED TYPE IN SONIC HEROES HAVING A LITERAL TORNADO MOVE ON COMMAND. Espio, Amy, Shadow, and yes, Sonic himself. While it's not central to most of them, as Espio's is more just smoke wind for his invisibility ninja trick, most of them are related to their sheer speed; Amy in particular being the speed at which she can swing her hammer, while Sonic and Shadow are self-explanatory. I'd also like to note that wind and electricity are loosely related, both being present in or made with air; you could even throw in water in there since clouds can contain both it and electricity. So Sonic using wind and electricity interchangeably is not really an issue imo; it's more that I don't see a reason for him to be proficient with electricity given it's generated via static air or machines, whereas just his running speed is enough to create a lot of wind on its own. Although at the end of the day, whichever one Sonic ain't using goes to Tails anyways.
Possibly. Considering the drastic shift in Sonic's moveset, it's possible that the ancient technology could relate to the electrical boost. The only potential flaw with that is that Sonic can use the electrical boost practically right from the get-go. He'd gone in and out of Cyberspace once, but that's it. But the blue boost looks very visually different from any of the unlockable skills that's presumably due to ancient technology. It's probably nothing too in-depth, and it's just a design choice extracted from the movies to keep all areas of the franchise consistent, but interesting thought! :D
It's funny you mention Sonic having two games where he has "wind abilities" but forgot to note that in Sonic '06, you get a literal green gem that allows you to create tornadoes.

2:17 uhm actually its most likely called knight of the wind because sonic gains the title before fighting sir Percival who asks for sonic to "state his master" or something along those lines and then he says sonething along the lines of "i have no master but the wind that blows free" and after the fight with Percival he gains the title for saving them from death

While they aren’t magnetized (for gameplay reasons), when getting rings in Frontiers it looks similar to when they are magnetized by that shield, could it be that Sonic “absorbed” its properties as time went on?
After posting the video it definitely dawned on me that I hadn't considered the electric shield from the classics! It's definitely something to note, as all electrical abilities Sonic has had prior the the movie have been due to some sort of power up and not Sonic's natural ability. I think Sonic should have both wind and electrical power since both fit him as a character. Wind to show how fast and carefree he is and electricity to also show how fast and show how energetic he is. My theory for Sonic is that his powers are growing and we can see it in the gameplay and it would be cool if he use his electricity to shock robots. But I want Sonic to utilize both elementals to his advantage like using it like projectiles or shock wave or even combine together to make a new powerful move to make him more speedier and more powerful.
Okay, take this into account. Sonic is only able to use wind due to his base speed, which grows over time. In the games, he is only now getting to a point that his light speed attacks are able to be used without special gear. So it's safe to assume Modern Sonic is reaching speeds comperable to the wally west flash. who generates BLUE LIGHTNING, which means a greater connection to their speed. So his element isn't wind, or lightning, it's SPEED. thats been his element since 1991.
He also used wind abilities in Sonic heroes, Sonic battle, Sonic riders and Sonic Rush I'm sure there's more out there but those are the ones I could think off top of my head

I think part of the reason Sonic gets wind and lightning both is that both of them fit the concept of "Flow," which describes Sonic to a tee. Wind and electricity are both defined by movement, and go from place to place. They take the path of least resistance, but can be amazingly powerful despite that. They're neither of them easy to contain and direct, and Sonic, of course, is defined by his freedom.
I like to believe Sonic's boost ability is somewhat wind related, hence why he can boost on rails or boards where his running speed would have no benefit. The other characters we see boost are Blaze and Shadow. I think Blaze uses fire power and Shadow gets a yellow aura iirc so they could be chaos power or something else. Could also "explain" why he need wisps to boost in Colors since there's not the same air in space. Idk.
Definitely an oversight on my half. However, Sonic's the only character to carry that electrical effect into other media. Knuckles didn't display it in Frontiers, despite having it in the movie (although that could be perhaps because he didn't have the opportunity to).
since sonic wind from SA2, the boost ability and the attacks from sonic chronicles and fighters...i have always just thought of sonic boost as sonic using Wind Magic to cancel air resistance to make himself faster, or more accurately, unrestrict himself...or to blast for double jumps and by extension the homing attack.
There's also the hero tornado attack in sonic heroes. The electricity in the movies is just suppose to be an easily understood visual to demonstrate sonic has power beyond his speed(it's why knuckles also has it). You can see DragonBall evolution for what it looks like when they use wind to demonstrate power.
I'm be a chaotic mf and add this factor in: he has fire based moves in sonic adventure 2 and sonic advance 3. Real talk though, I generally assume that chaos energy is a power system in the sonic universe and can manifest in a number of ways based on the characters, hence everyone's various elemental moves, including ones we don't typically associate with them at first glance. You could say shadow uses raw chaos energy usually, but some moves appear to have some fire or electric properties to them. Knuckles is typically a earth & fire guy, yet he has thunder arrow. Tails be using a mix of wind and electric (though most of the electric stuff is via gadgets but chaos energy been used as batteries in universe too so... could work. And that's before getting into even more with the cast with Amy & rouge with the hearts, espio having a wind ninjutsu, vectors bubble gum fire bombs, rouge with a black hole move, the list goes on. While the electricity could be justified on sonic as a enhancement of his perceptions (hence the quicksilver time slow scenes in the film)it probably could be explained as a part of chaos energy enhancing his abilities while still having wind as his main thing.

I agree. The wind works more contextually- making him unique, but also matching his characterization more. Combining the two though could also work.

A few weeks ago I saw a tweet from a person named @banana_queen that said:
"Personally I like what Frontiers seems to be going for and have Sonic incorporating a bit of both. Let him be the entire storm. He is a force of nature. Something you cannot contain or control. He’s what you get when the stars collide."
I think this is a good interpretation of Sonic's abilities and it really makes sense (at least to me). :)
I mean winds and electricity are both associated in the form of storms. That's a pretty easy way to wrap it together nicely. He's not just electric or just wind, he's a free wild storm.

The reason why sonic was called the knight of the wind in sonic and the black knight was because of the cutscene before the blaze fight. Blaze asks who his master is, sonic says he has no master other than the wind that blows free, in the post fight cutscene, sonic is officially knighted as the knight of the wind. That’s definitely the biggest depiction of his wind association.

I think it would be cool if Sonic were also repented as a water elemental. Think about it:
- Water is his greatest weakness as he can't swim, so it'd be pretty cool from a narrative standpoint of him having literal control over his greatest weakness/fear.
- Water is associated with sleekness and fluidity, which fits with his acrobatic nature
- And water is almost always associated with the color blue, just like Sonic
I love the the wind element in sonic. And the idea of him having aerokinesis. It gives sonic and blaze that fire & wind dynamic, with wind going horizontally while fire raises vertically.
I remember seeing that tweet about choosing wind Sonic (Sonic from the games) or lighting Sonic (Movie Sonic) some people and I said we should combine both of them to make Sonic a storm. I also can't find the tweet.

Here's another little point to get across.
Sonic is using his Speed to create those strong winds.
Not using innate abilities to control the wind itself like an Airbender.
All he's doing is spinning fast enough that he's practically throwing really powerful gusts of wind or sonicbooms at his enemies.
The Lightning like ability is more because, as Sonic himself, is because he's a "Ball of Super Energy".
Very cool video that I haven't yet seen anyone else do. My quick two cents on the matter is the following: they are all simply the results of Sonic's tremendous speed. Wind comes from Sonic's movements, while electricity is his potential energy physically manifested into kinetic energy, again, when he runs. They aren't powers Sonic has, but rather, he generates them.

It does make sense considering Sonic is very capable of harnessing chaos energy which is also potent energy manifested itself. And the wind does make sense due to his speed. It'd be cool if we see him use both skills similarly to Flash.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Surge from the IDW comics. To me her use of electrokinesis sort of felt like a way to subtly deny the idea of Sonic being electrically powered.
My knowledge of the comics largely extends just to whatever I see on Twitter BUT I've seen a lot of Surge content. Since I don't read the comics I don't think it's something I had the knowledge the comment on.

As someone else commented, he could unify both and be considered a storm considering that wind and lighting do both come from heavy storms. And also taking into account of Sonics power and physical attacks, he does strike like a storm.
Fun Fact: The manual for Sonic 1 used the phrase "Be Sonic, be atomic!", implying Sonic's power came from radioactivity.

I love wind abilities but I’ve been seeing a lot of wind based main characters
Naruto, Aang, Yuno, Kazuma Yagami
Wind ability based characters have a special connection with Japanese writers,
But the Electricity based characters are often used as side characters, (mostly black characters for some reason, no hate just curious )
And as someone who loves Electricity or lightning based elemental powers in fiction, I absolutely love the fact that Sonic is now electric blue ball,
Always wanted this and finally got it, may it never change
screw it Sonic can do both, now make him incircle his enemies with not only super fast wind but mix in electricity to make an electric tornado, that'd be dope
Secret Rings and Black Knight had a lot of wind effects for the abilities you could obtain as well, and Sonic Heroes had the Blue Tornado (which btw Cyloop can easily come back without needing to be a weird lingering connection to cyberspace, cause everything cyloop does was done just the same by Blue Tornado)
There's also that one wind move in Sonic Heroes.

AAYYEE THANKS FOR THE SHOUT OUT MAN! really interesting video, yeah when the first movie came out, I was really confused why sonic had electricity powers and at the time it kinda pissed me off cuz he was basically the flash at that point. but I eventually just got use to it but I believe that sonic's electricity was truly just a lack of knowing what was accurate to the source material and the creators simply used a stereotype of speed being associated to electricity in a lot of fiction. I mean the first sonic movie's hype honestly felt like it was simply cuz of sonic's redesign because the rest of the movie pretty much has nothing to do with sonic or his world and the movie at the time was being made by people who didn't really care for sonic if you really think about it, and the redesign was like a last minute saving grace, after how successful the first movie was, it goes to show people still love this character which is why they went all out in the second movie and had more elements in the games be included but since they already established sonic had electricity powers I don't think it would make sense for them to go back and change it to wind. but yeah pretty weird how this concept is being tied to the games now, I wonder if they will continue to do this.

I don't think there is a crisis. He still uses wind primarily in his attacks in Frontiers. Electricity just comes from his speed's energy. Electricity is generated by harnessing light energy from the sun. The faster Sonic runs, the more energy would be produced in order to turn into electricity. Sonic is always metaphorically connected to the sun.
Actually he could be both cause sometimes storms (which is wind) can be charged with electricity so technically Sonic is the blue storm that learned the power of electricity like real life and fictional storms! Or we can say that he's fast as lightning and we just felt the wind of his speed

Man's really talked about Sonic having wind as an element without mentioning EVERY SPEED TYPE IN SONIC HEROES HAVING A LITERAL TORNADO MOVE ON COMMAND. Espio, Amy, Shadow, and yes, Sonic himself.
While it's not central to most of them, as Espio's is more just smoke wind for his invisibility ninja trick, most of them are related to their sheer speed; Amy in particular being the speed at which she can swing her hammer, while Sonic and Shadow are self-explanatory.
I'd also like to note that wind and electricity are loosely related, both being present in or made with air; you could even throw in water in there since clouds can contain both it and electricity.
So Sonic using wind and electricity interchangeably is not really an issue imo; it's more that I don't see a reason for him to be proficient with electricity given it's generated via static air or machines, whereas just his running speed is enough to create a lot of wind on its own.
Although at the end of the day, whichever one Sonic ain't using goes to Tails anyways.

Possibly. Considering the drastic shift in Sonic's moveset, it's possible that the ancient technology could relate to the electrical boost.
The only potential flaw with that is that Sonic can use the electrical boost practically right from the get-go. He'd gone in and out of Cyberspace once, but that's it. But the blue boost looks very visually different from any of the unlockable skills that's presumably due to ancient technology.
It's probably nothing too in-depth, and it's just a design choice extracted from the movies to keep all areas of the franchise consistent, but interesting thought! :D
It's funny you mention Sonic having two games where he has "wind abilities" but forgot to note that in Sonic '06, you get a literal green gem that allows you to create tornadoes.

the sonic boss fight when you play as blaze in sonic rush, theres one for sure thats a wind attack- it being a tornado but he has this wind exploding? homing attack (idk) and then even in the boost games the blue aura that surrounds sonic when boosting (minus colors) is supposed to be the sound barrier being shattered: a sonic boom if you will.

2:17 uhm actually its most likely called knight of the wind because sonic gains the title before fighting sir Percival who asks for sonic to "state his master" or something along those lines and then he says sonething along the lines of "i have no master but the wind that blows free" and after the fight with Percival he gains the title for saving them from death
There's also the Insta-Shield in S3&K. The white aura is reminiscent of wind.
Oh yeah there was another abilities like how he can use his speed to heal himself by molecules in his body and air attacks in sonic fighters

Interesting! Do you think the electric shield from the classics can come up in this discussion too? While they aren’t magnetized (for gameplay reasons), when getting rings in Frontiers it looks similar to when they are magnetized by that shield, could it be that Sonic “absorbed” its properties as time went on?
After posting the video it definitely dawned on me that I hadn't considered the electric shield from the classics!
It's definitely something to note, as all electrical abilities Sonic has had prior the the movie have been due to some sort of power up and not Sonic's natural ability. Then, Frontiers rolls around and Sonic can now 'absorb' rings as they fly towards him, on top of the movie influences.

I also forgot to mention the double jump that Sonic has had since Colors, which was also an electric shield-exclusive ability in the classics; but there are other characters that have had access to it, like Shadow, Blaze, and Amy iirc, which would lead to the question of these characters having any connection to the electric element. I think Sonic should have both wind and electrical power since both fit him as a character. Wind to show how fast and carefree he is and electricity to also show how fast and show how energetic he is. My theory for Sonic is that his powers are growing and we can see it in the gameplay and it would be cool if he use his electricity to shock robots. But I want Sonic to utilize both elementals to his advantage like using it like projectiles or shock wave or even combine together to make a new powerful move to make him more speedier and more powerful.

Okay, take this into account. Sonic is only able to use wind due to his base speed, which grows over time. In the games, he is only now getting to a point that his light speed attacks are able to be used without special gear. So it's safe to assume Modern Sonic is reaching speeds comperable to the wally west flash. who generates BLUE LIGHTNING, which means a greater connection to their speed. So his element isn't wind, or lightning, it's SPEED. thats been his element since 1991.

This video is great, thank you very much. I think part of the reason Sonic gets wind and lightning both is that both of them fit the concept of "Flow," which describes Sonic to a tee. Wind and electricity are both defined by movement, and go from place to place. They take the path of least resistance, but can be amazingly powerful despite that. They're neither of them easy to contain and direct, and Sonic, of course, is defined by his freedom.

I like to believe Sonic's boost ability is somewhat wind related, hence why he can boost on rails or boards where his running speed would have no benefit. The other characters we see boost are Blaze and Shadow. I think Blaze uses fire power and Shadow gets a yellow aura iirc so they could be chaos power or something else.
Could also "explain" why he need wisps to boost in Colors since there's not the same air in space. Idk.

Definitely an oversight on my half. However, Sonic's the only character to carry that electrical effect into other media. Knuckles didn't display it in Frontiers, despite having it in the movie (although that could be perhaps because he didn't have the opportunity to).

since sonic wind from SA2, the boost ability and the attacks from sonic chronicles and fighters...i have always just thought of sonic boost as sonic using Wind Magic to cancel air resistance to make himself faster, or more accurately, unrestrict himself...or to blast for double jumps and by extension the homing attack.

I'm be a chaotic mf and add this factor in: he has fire based moves in sonic adventure 2 and sonic advance 3.
Real talk though, I generally assume that chaos energy is a power system in the sonic universe and can manifest in a number of ways based on the characters, hence everyone's various elemental moves, including ones we don't typically associate with them at first glance.
You could say shadow uses raw chaos energy usually, but some moves appear to have some fire or electric properties to them. Knuckles is typically a earth & fire guy, yet he has thunder arrow. Tails be using a mix of wind and electric (though most of the electric stuff is via gadgets but chaos energy been used as batteries in universe too so... could work.
And that's before getting into even more with the cast with Amy & rouge with the hearts, espio having a wind ninjutsu, vectors bubble gum fire bombs, rouge with a black hole move, the list goes on. While the electricity could be justified on sonic as a enhancement of his perceptions (hence the quicksilver time slow scenes in the film)it probably could be explained as a part of chaos energy enhancing his abilities while still having wind as his main thing.
