    I am glad there are still people talking about Prince of Tennis. I cannot put into words how deeply attached I am into this anime. I have been watching this since I was in grade school, still one of the best anime that I do love. It's like a home made fried chicken that tastes so good you don't want it to be in a commercial. That type of feeling. Now it's making me feel so nostalgic. I came across this post from my feed on twitter about POT earlier, check out things on TH-cam then I found this video. I just subscribed!

    Ryoma being cocky and strong is what made Prince of Tennis stand out to me from other series in the early 2000s. His intro leaves a strong impression and I was tired of zero to hero stories. Everyone in tenipuri is passionate and crazy about tennis in their own ways and that's awesome.
    Nice video, echoing others that it's cool to see someone make new videos like this of tenipuri so recently! Subbed, I'll check out your other content too. :)

    • @ElysVT
      @ElysVT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Shin Shaman I don't mean Ryoma is the strongest, he's certainly not. But we didn't have to see him learn tennis from zero, and he's not a weakling.
      In many other popular series back then, at the same time as prince of tennis, the main character often started from zero or was pretty weak at first (examples: Naruto, Air Gear, Hitman Reborn, Eyeshield...). That's why Ryoma made an impression on me compared to those and why I liked it a lot.

    Very much agree with this video! I watched the whole series for the first time half a year ago after watching one of the OVAs years ago. One thing that remained constant even as the tennis play styles got more and more ridiculous was the interesting characters and their interactions with each other on and off the court. I loved how at first, many of the opponents they face seem very flat but as the match goes on (and especially when you see them after the match), you see that there’s always more going on. Ryoma is definitely one of those characters that on paper seems like he’d be one dimensional because he already is a prodigy, unlike most sports anime where the goal is reaching that level. But I think the main growth of him as a character is going from his individualistic aspirations to becoming a team player. All in all, the series is very fun and enjoyable, so I fully recommend watching it to the end!

    It's amazing to see people talking about this in 2022! The number 1 sports anime for me way back from 2009! Brilliant storytelling, character development and animation is always getting better! I'm on the nth time watching the series, movies, the OVAs, even the chibi teni-puri spinoffs, and second season. I CANNOT believe that there's a new 2021 animation about Hyotei vs Rikkaidai. When I saw that teaser, I felt like so detached from my inner childhood.

    I am seriously not a fan of sports anime. BUT Prince of Tennis has a good mix of sports, friendship, comedy, without losing the plot in the process. Imagine how popular it is in Japan the time it was airing, to the point that they released songs PER character and OSTs PER team!!! I am so happy someone is reviewing this anime. This is much better than some animes airing this modern day. This is my #1 anime ever. Every character is handsome (sorry needed to mention this hahaha) kidding aside, every character has their own story and motivation. Every one of them mattered to the story and the main character's growth. ♡♡♡ tenipuri heart 💯

  • @invincible_idol_mel
    @invincible_idol_mel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For anyone older than 25 and who grew up with anime, the Prince of Tennis was (and still is) HUGE. It basically invented the genre of sports shounen that turned into shoujo. There are chart topping character songs, stage musicals, movies, multiple drama adaptations and every other media type you can think of. A sports manga doesn’t get that big by accident. The mangaka is a genius anime hair stylist and has a keen sense of how to develop even the most insignificant (even antagonistic) side characters into one with a rabid fan base. It’s not underrated, it’s simply too large and too old for younger people to bother catching up with - which is a shame, since the Prince of Tennis is a golden classic that is still somehow still surprising us with how many new characters we can love!

    I was born in 1996 and caught ONE episode of this anime, I was super young, this show was on tv in a hotel room we were staying at for some reason, no idea the reason, the year, I don't even remember what time of day it was other than the fact that I was in bed at the time. I remember clearly what happened in the episode because it's the episode where they talked about Ryoma's special "Split Step" and I remember thinking "Anime about... sports? say what?" I also remember loving the show a lot even though I only caught ONE episode. I also remember the tv announcer saying some show called... Mayer? Mayor? Something like that was supposed to come on after Prince of Tennis. But it's so long ago now. This year, I decided I was finally going to pull the show up on Crunchyroll and.... Prince of Tennis is my favourite anime and no I actually didnt watch this in my childhood I came across this unintentionally a few years ago and oh my how do I even begin? Amazing character developement and when you watch the whole thing the OVAs, the special episodes you truly realize that everyone in PoT is like a main character and and truly like a found family😂. As we all know Ryoma is showed as a badass character but dont think that he will be better than every player in the series. He probably learnes and developes the most which is amazing to watch. Amazing plot, psychological games, and generally the pace. When you watch a few episodes you are introduced to the highschool team that Echizen will be in the rest of the series. Each character in the team are like a main character on their own and dont think that everything will be all lovey dovey. Echizens journey to stop being his fathers copy and get stronger is really hard and fun to watch. And the dynamic between Fuji and Echizen is something else on its own. I could talk about Prince of Tennis for hours but I think you get what I mean if you are into sports animes you have to give it a shot!

    Prince of Tennis was the first sports anime I ever liked. A lot of the first half of the manga or maybe more are skills/serves that can be used in real life, although it is exaggerated in the anime, lol. It got me into playing Tennis in High School (although I sucked) I learnt to do the Kick and Slice serves. Those two serves would confuse my opponents because they were like me too, just new players because there weren't a lot of people playing tennis. It made it hard for them to return my serves. I still watch the anime even though everything has become outlandish, lol. Most games are won by a very strong/fast/flat shot across the court.

    And all of a sudden this gets recommended. Ugh, I mean it's a shame it came out before the internet really exploded, and it's never gotten any traction in the west, there's so much *CONTENT* although, New! Prince of Tennis I ended up dropping about the time Atobe gained X-ray vision /s
    I legit missed the earlier arcs where it was about tactics and techniques. There's a big reason why Inui and Kaidoh are still a couple of my favourite characters to this day. Keep preaching, eventually people will rediscover it.
    I'm still waiting for that to happen with Soukyuu no Fafner. almost NO ONE talks about that in the west yet projects for it are still ongoing.

    Is this better than baby steps or not?

    • @ImHitch
      @ImHitch  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I dont know. My friend told me he really enjoyed baby steps but to finish it, you gotta read the manga. He was obessed with Prince of Tennis tho because of how competitive it is.

      It depends on what you mean by better. Prince of Tennis is, at its core, a shounen battle series (not unlike DBZ or One Piece) that uses tennis as its vehicle for expressing battles. It is highly stylized and unrealistic and has very exciting and hype moments, and that's what many love about it. Baby Steps is the opposite. It portrays much more realistic tennis, as well as dives into the mental and strategy aspect that goes into a tennis match. No reality-defying special shots in Baby Steps. I highly recommend both.

      @darkreunion7882 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the same anime, it's just that there has been a little time skip like Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. The goal is different too.
