Ryan, I was carrying the Nikon D3, the batteries for this camera have an incredible life. I carried 2 batteries (one in the camera and one in my bag), I didn't charge on trail and never had to the entire trail. I had the charger in my bounce box and sent it to all resupply stops and charged them up in town.

That was interesting. Always good to see and know what others are taking alone with them.

I would have ditched the cam and pod but that sleeping pad and the down gear is badass!

    One question and one suggestion:
My plan for thru-hiking PCT is for 2013( if we survive 2012!!).I am 44 years old and my north american hiking experience has been a six weeks 550 miles soloish!!(with my dog) thru-hiking of the Bruce Trail in Canada in summer 2011 (average 13 miles per day) but the question is about thru-hiking the PCT with my dog.
He is a 4 years old Sheltie (looks quite like little Lassie) and is 22 pounds and super fit.

As of 2012 you can buy waterproof down, making it more viable in any conditions. It will be interesting to see what happends to the hiking gear with this new innovation.

That isn't a fact Jon. It greatly depends on your cicumstances. In dryer weather, you can't beat down for warmth vs weight & compressability. In the desert and when the temp is remaining below freezing, down is the way to go. However I wouldn't touch it in high humidity environments and where it rains often.

He adds 25 percent weights to my food and water suply and nothing more.
If he can beat the heat of mexican side then I am going to thru hike PCT but if he can not then I am going to start further. What do you think?
My suggestion:Gatorade has a 710 cc bottle which has the same wide opening but the cap can open and close safely and easily by rotating a designed cap.It gives you the convenience of drinking water while walking without need to open the cap completely.Try two of them.

I like that food bag: I like the zipper going the long way. What's the manufacturer's name, if you don't mind? I notice it's kinda ate up: was it mice got into it or what? How good is it for sealing in odors? Do you think you could get like 12# of food in it (normal food for like 5 days)? Looks pretty light, too; how much does it weigh? Where'd u get it? Thanks

He walks couple of steps behind me and never leaves the trail to chase animals without my permission.Has no problem with cold weather(even minus 20 centigerade) and can walk under the sun in 95 degrees fahrenhait for a long period and in 105 degrees for couple of hours.I will have to carry him on my backpack when passing the rivers and I am quite sure he can pass Sierra mountains but can he walk the dessert with me?I will have to carry some extra food and water for him like I did in Bruce trail

so you never carry more than a liter of water on the pct even on the south end?

Getting all the weight down to super light, where every oz is counted... Then brings 8 pounds of camera gear... Are you a professional photographer? If not, I don't get the super heavy camera gear. Either way, thanks for the video.

Unnescessarily alarmist. Planting FACT! at the end comes across as - "Case Closed". I would alter your comment to say only a fool buys down without reading advice on how to use / care for it. It can slowly absorb moisture over several days in high humidity, reducing loft and effectiveness, but that is not the same as 'saturation', a state most intelligent users know well how to prevent in the first place. As with the "cotton kills" hysteria, there are ways to avoid the 'dire straits' stage.

only a fool allows his down to get wet in the first place.
