  • This is an animation I made in 2018, but never got round to publishing. It was intended to give an impression of the interior of the Brennan torpedo station at Fort Camden. Camden Fort at Cork held one of the secret Brennan torpedo stations between 1887 and 1905 and was one of only 2 stations to have 2 launch ramps, such was the importance of the harbour at Cork. This animation is a walk through the installation, based on original drawings, and was produced in collaboration with Norma O'Connor for her MA in Digital Arts 2018. You can support my animations here: / vbbsmyt . Animation created using Cinema 4D. Music credits are shown at the end of the movie.

      In the late 1800s this would of been the equivalent of walking into the most classified icbm launch center today.

      This part of the fort was top-secret. Few knew about it in order to preserve the secrecy around the Brennan torpedo, as it was effectively a superweapon in its time: a torpedo able to move near-invisibly and be turned to aim at a target not completely in line with its relatively unassuming launch ramp.
      This thing would have terrified everyone it could be pointed at, and reverse-engineering it would have given England’s enemies a FORMIDABLE weapon to use.
      Note that the actual mechanics of the damn thing are kept separate, in a safe with two key locks: the same level of security you’d find nowadays on the go-to-war safe of an ICBM silo.

    Have any of these locations reached out to you yet? This is great material for a virtual tour, a museum could really use this to take people back in time to when everything was working.

      Its supposed to. As somebody said earlier, this was in the 1880's what an ICBM launch complex would be today. Average day Victorian-era citizen with no ties to the British military wasn't meant to or supposed to see things like this.

      Nick: There were 2 Brennan forts on the Thames - 1 at Cliffe (opposite Tilbury) and the other at Garrison Point Fort at the mouth of the Medway. Garrison Point was the main testing and training location. Sadly, little is left of these two installations. Rob

    Wow!! What an interesting bit of engineering craziness. I am a mechanical engineer and so I understand all of how it works. What I have difficulty understanding is how all this was paid for. Im guessing it was never used in war. If I ever can afford a trip across the Atlantic this alone would be worth the trip.

    • @vbbsmyt
      @vbbsmyt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oldtrkdrvr: There is very little left of the Brennan stations. All the equipment has long been dismantled, and the sites are inaccessible.
      As for why and who paid for it. The British Government. In the 1880’s to protect naval ports against an invading force, the entrances were protected by controlled minefields, but these were time consuming to lay, and subject to the deterioration of the cabling and mines themselves. The Brennan torpedo stations provided an alternative - always available, and with the ability to steer a large warhead onto selected targets. Louis Brennan received a very large sum from the British Government to develop the torpedo and then to manufacture the torpedoes, maintain them and train the operators.

    • @vbbsmyt

      What could possibly damage the Brennan installation?. It is buried deep in a hill, so there was no weapon that existed in the 1890’s that could be delivered to cause blast damage . Aeroplanes had not been invented. Warships did not have fire control or gyro compasses and rangefinders were of very limited accuracy, so hitting a small opening from a moving ship would be almost impossible even when within the range of the torpedo.
