Every city has lots of these 'local' food stores (Sainbsury's, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, etc), in the city centres and suburbs. They are places to pop in to get a few items, or buy something for your lunch. For a wider range of products and to do a larger shop, everyone goes to their larger branches.

They aren’t really under staffed. They have the staff they need. Slight under staffing is better. People have to work stocking shelves instead of chatting (which is the usual pastime of overstuffed stores) and they also have the self service tills so you don’t need lots of cashiers, only one for the cigarettes and lottery kiosk where those who get confused with self service can go to check out.
Ribena is a black currant juice drink. Black currant is what you’ll find for things where Americans would use Concord grapes, i.e., jam, fruit juice, jelly (but the English don’t have much in the way of jelly - what you spread on toast) but you will occasionally find Bramble jelly. I buy it for PBJs, because I don’t like jam on PBJs. Brits refer to the plant not the fruit on the label - so the label for blackberry jam is Bramble jam or Bramble jelly. What Americans usually think of as jelly is actually a brand name, Jello, for the refrigerated fruity treat. And that’s what Brits think you’re talking about when you mention ‘jelly’.
Yeah as folk are saying this place is about a 10ththe size of a full sainsbury's. These locals and metros are aimed at the lunch Market and picking up just a few things in a rush. You wouldn't do a full shop there. These small stores have been designed to crush what you would call Mom and Pop stores. And they've largely done it after 15 years.
I was really surprised that you hadn't seen set honey before guys! We have runny honey and set honey. Both 100% pure stuff, but if you leave runny honey in the cupboard for a long time it will eventually crysralize and 'set'. However if you warm it up, it goes back to runny 🤗💕
In the US eggs are refrigerated as they need to be washed in detergent due to the filthy conditions poultry is kept in, we have higher animal welfare standards here so the eggs remain with their natural protective oils around the shell so can be at room temperature
Hey guys! I work in the building opposite that Sainsbury's! Thanks for coming to York. We have a lot of little Sainsbury's Locals and Tesco Expresses in town because not only do people working there pop in for lunch, but also York, of course, has lots of visitors to cater for. There are two bigger Sainsbury's and two bigger Tescos in retail parks on the edge of town. The street that Local is on has four hotels at the other end of it, so Sainsbury's are targetting guests there as well as locals.
The 'Sainsbury Local' stores are always slightly more expensive than Sainsbury's regular supermarkets. (Same applies to Tesco 'Express stores' and Tesco Supermarkets.)
Yeah. The smaller 'local/express' convenience stores are always more expensive and have less variety than the full supermarkets. The advantages being, because of the smaller store size, there tends to be a lot more of them, which often means there's less distance to travel to find one.
Tesco has three versions, Tesco, Tesco Metro, and Tesco Express. The prices at the Tesco Metro are the same as at the ordinary Tesco but Tesco Express is considerably more expensive (I discovered when I popped into a Tesco Metro I'd used a lot in the past and found that it had become a Tesco Express).
It’s always better to reuse a bag. Maybe buy a small net bag or canvas bag you can keep in your pocket. Paper bags have to come from somewhere. Originally trees but even recycled paper bags use energy to make them. Reuse is best.

One of the differences between UK and US infrastructure is how we build our town and cities. You build large housing zones with supermarkets and other commercial buildings in a different zone and you need your cars to go and do a 'big' shop. We mix the two in one area so will have a lot of smaller more convenient shops in addition to larger supermarkets which may be on the outskirts of towns. You were in one of the smaller shops. It has nothing to do with the size of the town.
I love this series, I live in York for 23 years and I go into this sainsburys everyday after work, but looking through a camera viewpoint around York and even this store looks like a completely different place, all looks better through a camera this series definitely gives me a fresh appreciation of the city I live in 😄 I never realised you guys was coming to York but have been watching you since covid, glad you both liked the city, wouldn't live anywhere else.
That was strangely interesting, watching you explore a Sainsbury's Local; that is certainly something I like to do when on holiday in Europe, where the products really do seem very 'different' (in particular, I can spend ages admiring all the liqueurs, with their gorgeous colours and bottle-shapes 🙂)
Yes, my sons and I were bowled over by how much liquorice was stacked in the local convenience store in Reykjavík. I knew the Scandinavians are into it in a big way but not that much!
It's a good way to learn a bit of the language too (obviously not applicable for Americans in the UK). On my first day in Germany I went for a walk round a supermarket and could order a pizza with my own choice of toppings that night... It's kind of like the alphabet posters for kids, you have an image and a word that sticks in you head which makes it extremely easy to learn.
Definitely a common model here that you have these smaller stores near where people live. The bigger supermarkets that often also sell clothes etc. items (Similar to Target etc. in the US) are then located on the outskirts. Some bigger towns have one or two supermarket also closer to the town center as well.
Yes your in an Sainsburys Local , a small version of the ones you've seen in reactions etc also there Is Tesco Express , these are stores which are usually open later than the bigger stores and do not stock anywhere near the amount of their bigger brothers. The smaller stores are usually a little more expensive than the main ones.

And I'm the same!!! :D Like what others have said, a Sainsburys local is just a place where you pick up odds and sods, not meant for a shop "shop", go in, get some milk, buy some wine, put the lottery on... Most of the Supermarket chains do "Locals" or convenience store versions. The prices are significantly higher than in the supermarket versions as you are paying extra for convenience, supposedly.
To be fair, they are more convenient, the town centre where those are located will have better public transport links for non-drivers & the increased prices are largely in part due to the higher rents in those locations too.
You have to remember that was a "Sainsbury Local". A small one for the city centre. Big supermarkets are normally on the outskirts for obvious reasons....oops, as per the conversation with the employee at the end!
If you're still in York, take a trip out to the Sainsbury's or Asda at Monks Cross or the Tesco at Clifton Moor. Neither are that far away and are a very different shopping experience.
You were in what you would call a convenience store kind of like a 7/11 or a Walgreens. These stores are mainly for people doing a top up shop or for city centre workers wanting to grab a quick bite rather than a full supermarket. That's why it was called Sainsbury's local not just Sainsbury's
You're in a small Sainsburys, one of the local stores not one of their much larger supermarkets. In the larger supermarkets they do a far larger range of items. When you picked up the anchor tub and said it was cheaper here, you also have to remember we don't add tax at checkout. Oh, it's not pronounced AROE it's prounounce AIRO like the first part of AEROplane.
Nice review! Bare in mind this supermarket is a small compact Local version you’ll often see in many British towns. The huge stores are out of town generally. These types of stores are basically connivence essentials for locals. Enjoy your stay!
Tesco, Sainsburys etc started small, high street shops (usually slightly dearer with tailored, pared down lines) relatively recently. The main, really huge branches are 'edge of town' with free parking (for a couple of hours-see signage) and possibly 'own brand' fuel and sometimes slowish electric charging. Other supermarkets include ASDA (now British again), Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Coop and posh Waitrose. Upstart, ultra efficient Germans ALDI and LIDL are fast expanding, supposedly cost cutting competition in a fierce market.Tesco, Sainsbury, ASDA etc have large online booked time slot home delivery options for a decade or more. It isn't legal to video in 'private' spaces such as (highly competitive) supermarkets or malls without formal permission (unlikely), but hey, you got away with it!
Sainsbury's local and Tesco's Express are a fraction of the size of their regular stores. They tend to stock just the more common things people are likely to run out of. They are handy when you only need a few items and don't want to have to go through a gigantic store just for one or two things. They are what you would call a convenience store.
I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to Sainsbury's. That's my usual supermarket because it 's the closest to me, except mine is a regular sized store. Obviously in a bigger store the range of Old El Paso products is larger, as is pretty much everything else.

"Red 40" sounds alarming. Is it radioactive? You have to remember we're on an island roughly the size of California with at least 3x its population. Produce doesn't hang around in shops much beyond 2 days.
Sainsburys Local is a tiny version of the general supermarket. They typically put them in town centres where there is little room for a full size version shop. The prices in the local store is typically slightly higher than the standard store and of course the selection is much reduced. Our other main supermarkets also have their own version of this - smaller versions of their store in town centres or garages, etc.
That was definitely a smaller sainsbury, all the big stores we have smaller versions of as well, apart from asda i dont think Asda do smaller versions.
Asda have a few petrol station shops, not that many though. They've just been taken over by Euro Garages though, so my guess is we will see a lot more of them in future.
They actually do do smaller asda stores , they are called asda supermarket, there's one in old Swan liverpool and one in birkenhead North by the Raul station of same name
The eggs were very expensive, Tesco sell a box of 6 medium sized for £1.05. I have always kept eggs in the fridge even when I had my own chickens, I was in my forties when I learnt you're meant to store them at room temperature! Sainsbury's online shopping service has an excellent range of items far more than just groceries, you choose a one hour slot for delivery. I love that you were so interested and it surprises me how many things are different, like I thought set honey was universal. Perhaps you only use runny honey for baking so you don't have set honey for spreading?
glad you enjoyed your trip through a local sainsbury (pronounced a bit like sane berries) as may said here these are small local shops, like on the corner to pop into to get bits and bobs from, the bigger markets are much much larger. having shopped in a walmart, UK fresh produce is much cheaper. you really wanted the heinz beans though! Eggs are sold in 6, 12 or 24. they can be caged, barn or free range. i have enjoyed your personal insights during your trip, next time you come to York we can go to Bettys.
I love Sweet Chilli crisps - especially the Sensations 😋😋😋 Heinz beans are good - but I like Branstons too - supermarket own brands are Ok too 👍 And the prices on the tickets are the cost at the checkout no extra sales tax Whenever I'm on holiday I love walking down the aisles looking at the local brands and food stuffs
Lidl and Aldi are the shockers; they're like Whole Foods but with 70% off. I was in Whole Foods in Houston, Texas, and then in Aldi and Lidl soon afterwards. Honestly, Lidl and Aldi (for a lot of things) are about a third of the price. 500g low fat natural yoghurt in Lidl is 49p. Sixty cents!
I do not care for their meat produce.I bought a steak ...sirloin....and i could not chew the steak.Maybe it is is different in the U.S.I live in the U.K.
Eggs in the uk are not washed because the welfare requirements are higher and standers higher than the US for example in Europe all chicks are vaccinated against e-coli and salmonella, a cost the US industry does not want, it appears they prefer to wash and treat chickens with antibiotics. .
In the UK we don't pay VAT (Value added Tax) on a lot of our food. It's one of the better things we do, especially right now given the costs skyrocketing in regards to a lot of "basics". Doesn't apply to restaurants or, largely speaking junk food (such as crisps, sports drinks etc) but most ingredients to make up a meal is VAT free. It may be why things feel slightly cheaper than when travelling to the US. We should certainly remember this and make sure they don't take it away from us. It's a good policy, among many bad policies so it feels worth mentioning.

I work in a food shop similar to that. If water were sprayed on the produce, nobody would buy it. That does not keep it fresh. It would in fact, make it rot quicker. Produce should be kept cold and dry.
It's a local. It's much smaller, much less options and the prices are hiked from the main supermarkets. It's kinda an exploitative way to cash in when you need something quickly but don't have time to go to the proper supermarket and these are usually located in walking distance from homes and work streets. I'd say the Sainsbury's I go to is possibly 10 to 15 times larger than a local and prices/deals are significantly more enticing. Every product you looked at is cheaper in the main store.
That’s a teeny, tiny, weeny Sainsbury’s. You’re in a little high street pop in store. The usual big ones have clothes, phones, electric stuff, bathroom stuff and a restaurant. The water spraying just makes stuff look good and go off quickly. You’ll see misting in the veg section in Morrison’s sometimes. Sainsbury’s food is often better tasting than Tesco but Tesco has lots of cleaning product deals, which makes it very much cheaper.
Thats only a "baby" Express community Sainsbury, there are also big ones and huge hypermarket ones. You get much better fresh produce at thise. Sainsbury Local is just a convenience store

That Sainsbury's is just a small Sainsbury's Local store, so has a smaller range of products. These stores are designed to be placed in high density small areas for quick trips and shops. More like a convenience store and not as a large supermarket.
Yea you visited a Sainsburies Local, which is simply a quick small little store for the bare essentials (Tesco also has Tesco Metro which is a smaller version). The bigger Sainsburies supermarkets tend to offer more things like, electrical goods, clothes, houseware (depends on each supermarket too), some have a pharmacy, opticians, some even offer cafe/restaurants, and extra little stores (some have Argos in too which is a reservation style warehouse catalogue store (order an item from a book, see if its in stock, wait for it to get sent to the counter from their warehouse storage and buy right there, instead of having all the items on show, makes for a smaller store footprint, with them hiding the warehouse above / below / behind the storefront, people dont buy groceries from it, its for more permanent things.)
Water mist in the uk is not needed as the products are moved quickly and the product is delivered everyday. For example one supermarket chain advertise locally sourced potatoes that have been harvested from the fields in the early hours of that morning. Furthermore ambient temperatures are not as high. Simply the turn over of fresh stock does not require misting.
The shop you visited is a small local grocery store which caters for the local community. Often in these smaller stores the prices are more expensive as the locations are usually in expensive areas and the rents are higher. They also carry less stock.
I'd recommend you guys try Lidl or Aldi if they have supermarkets around where you guys are staying. They have some great stuff in the middle aisles since they're where they keep some right bargains and they're really well priced compared to Sainsbury's (not hating on them since I do shop there from time to time) also, try Asda, they're owned by Walmart now so we do get some American stuff in our stores
Sainsbury's local is the fill -in stores between the bigger ones. You can get them in big or small towns it is about how close the main big store is rather than the population.
Sainsbury’s is my regular supermarket. The one you went to is very tiny one. The regular Sainsbury’s is quite large and with a huge variety of foods. Sainsbury’s also has the meal deal( which is I think better than Tesco’s) most supermarkets have meal deals.😊

Don't worry about the quality of the recording, it's the content and thought that counts! :) I'd recommend you invest in a camera with better image stabilization or one option is to buy a gimbal, especially if you're using your smartphone. Only downside is it may be a bit more obvious that you're filming.
As J.P. said, these are just pop in stores for our Supermarkets. So if ever you see Express after the name for example...Tesco Express...They don't pretend to hold untold stock for you to buy like their proper large supermarkets, but they have all the things you might buy in passing to eat or drink on your journey, or even stuff to take home for a quick meal or bite to eat. The size of the store limits them, and limits the selection. So for a proper shop, it has to be a proper large Supermarket.

Tesco and other UK companies have tried opening these local stores in the USA, I think Tesco had around 200 stores mainly in the west called Fresh & Easy. Tesco pulled out 10 years ago losing billions.
Sainsbury's started in the 19th century, one shop, a Cheesemonger's, soon was nationwide selling only cheese, bacon, ham and sausages. Up until the 60's one had to queue at separate counters for cheese and meat products, Ham and bacon sliced to order and cheese cut the same, the price would be written on the paper that they were wrapped in and paid for at a cashiers desk. A form of early hygiene control. They became a supermarket chain in the late 60's early 70's and until the early 2000's was still a family owned business.
Fun fact: There used to be "Giant" and "Titan" bank noted issued by the Bank of England for circulation in order to back Scottish and Irish currencies. They're no longer in circulation today, but these notes were worth £1,000,000 and £100,000,000 respectively when they were in use. (Edit: Additional information)
Sainsbury's Local and Tesco Express are both what you would probably class a Convenience Stores. They are mainly for doing small amounts of shopping. For a proper shopping trip we go to the main Stores which are many times bigger, have more choice, and the sell the larger pack sizes
Previous comment absolutely true,, if I turn right out of my street I am 200 yards from a small local Sainsbury. If I turn left I am less than a mile from a huge Sainsbury supermarket.
Sainsbury's Local and Tesco Extra are normally on a main or busy road close to a housing estate. Not in town or city centres. They are not designed for a weeks shopping. They cater for the workers etc. Most fresh products will go in one day. These shops are about the size of a shop in a local housing estate or as you Americans say neighbourhood. I spelt neighbourhood the correct way. Sainsbury's is considered low middle class upwards. p
that cloudy honey is just set honey which is just congealed honey it hasn't been mixed up or anything and its more like a spread because it doesn't drip its very thick.
Eggs - in the USA you wash off the protective layer of the eggs due to less hygienic farming practices in the USA. If you don’t wash off the protective layer, you can keep eggs outside the fridge. In the bugger shops, you can get large packs of eggs.
The open sections are chilled and don't need doors as they have some clever directional air flow to keep the cold on the products. This was just a local small store version. A supermarket for most people is big and out of town/edge of town or even sometimes in old built up areas but almost always away from the old high street (main street!).
Sainsburys & Tesco's have bigger stores that sell clothing and home essentials: i.e. bedding, kitchen equipment, bathroom things like scales. You went to Tesco Express and a smaller Sainsburys.
The Local, Express, Metro etc type of shops are like what you might call corner shops in the UK or bodegas in the US, or I guess convenience stores in either country. Except they're branded with the supermarket name and have a range of items specific to the store branding... They're quite a modern idea where the supermarkets scaled down from their usual giant warehouse type stores at out of town retail parks into small stores within populated areas.
You mentioned strawberry milk. My favourite is chocolate milk. I have even had coffee milk which is just like chilled Starbucks coffee at a quarter of the price (the carton is four times the size of a cup). Make sure to go to Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly where you'll get everything British and at highest quality. Try the biscuit section. The queen does her shopping there. Do you think she goes to Tesco.?
You won’t tend to find a large supermarket in a small town. You usually have to drive to get to the big supermarkets. The one you’re in is more like a Tesco Express and what is called a convenience store in the states. As I was writing this I heard what the young man said at the end.

That's absolutely correct Douglas. It's a marketing ploy to spray with water and as you say doesn't keep it fresh but actually can reduce shelf life

We found that out later but didn't get around to going to a bigger one as we went to other stores.
The 'Sainsbury Local' stores are always slightly more expensive than Sainsbury's regular supermarkets. (Same applies to Tesco 'Express stores' and Tesco Supermarkets.)
Yeah. The smaller 'local/express' convenience stores are always more expensive and have less variety than the full supermarkets. The advantages being, because of the smaller store size, there tends to be a lot more of them, which often means there's less distance to travel to find one.
Tesco has three versions, Tesco, Tesco Metro, and Tesco Express. The prices at the Tesco Metro are the same as at the ordinary Tesco but Tesco Express is considerably more expensive (I discovered when I popped into a Tesco Metro I'd used a lot in the past and found that it had become a Tesco Express).

It’s always better to reuse a bag. Maybe buy a small net bag or canvas bag you can keep in your pocket. Paper bags have to come from somewhere. Originally trees but even recycled paper bags use energy to make them. Reuse is best.

One of the differences between UK and US infrastructure is how we build our town and cities. You build large housing zones with supermarkets and other commercial buildings in a different zone and you need your cars to go and do a 'big' shop. We mix the two in one area so will have a lot of smaller more convenient shops in addition to larger supermarkets which may be on the outskirts of towns. You were in one of the smaller shops. It has nothing to do with the size of the town.
People also tend to shop more often for grocies since buying in bulk will have your food spoil before you eat it.

I love this series, I live in York for 23 years and I go into this sainsburys everyday after work,
but looking through a camera viewpoint around York and even this store looks like a completely different place,
all looks better through a camera this series definitely gives me a fresh appreciation of the city I live in 😄 I never realised you guys was coming to York but have been watching you since covid, glad you both liked the city, wouldn't live anywhere else.

That was strangely interesting, watching you explore a Sainsbury's Local; that is certainly something I like to do when on holiday in Europe, where the products really do seem very 'different' (in particular, I can spend ages admiring all the liqueurs, with their gorgeous colours and bottle-shapes 🙂)
Yes, my sons and I were bowled over by how much liquorice was stacked in the local convenience store in Reykjavík. I knew the Scandinavians are into it in a big way but not that much!
It's a good way to learn a bit of the language too (obviously not applicable for Americans in the UK). On my first day in Germany I went for a walk round a supermarket and could order a pizza with my own choice of toppings that night... It's kind of like the alphabet posters for kids, you have an image and a word that sticks in you head which makes it extremely easy to learn.
Definitely a common model here that you have these smaller stores near where people live. The bigger supermarkets that often also sell clothes etc. items (Similar to Target etc. in the US) are then located on the outskirts. Some bigger towns have one or two supermarket also closer to the town center as well.
Yes your in an Sainsburys Local , a small version of the ones you've seen in reactions etc also there Is Tesco Express , these are stores which are usually open later than the bigger stores and do not stock anywhere near the amount of their bigger brothers. The smaller stores are usually a little more expensive than the main ones.

Like what others have said, a Sainsburys local is just a place where you pick up odds and sods, not meant for a shop "shop", go in, get some milk, buy some wine, put the lottery on... That sorta setup!
The equivalent in the US would probably be something like a 7-Eleven.
they do vary in size, about a 10 minute walk from my house is a huge Sainsbury's where you can also buy clothes and tech.
Most of the Supermarket chains do "Locals" or convenience store versions. The prices are significantly higher than in the supermarket versions as you are paying extra for convenience, supposedly.
To be fair, they are more convenient, the town centre where those are located will have better public transport links for non-drivers & the increased prices are largely in part due to the higher rents in those locations too.
You have to remember that was a "Sainsbury Local". A small one for the city centre. Big supermarkets are normally on the outskirts for obvious reasons....oops, as per the conversation with the employee at the end!
If you're still in York, take a trip out to the Sainsbury's or Asda at Monks Cross or the Tesco at Clifton Moor. Neither are that far away and are a very different shopping experience.
It'd be a fair round trip from Kansas! Shame though, it would've been a typical slice of Brit culture with our "mall substitute" retail facilities.

You were in what you would call a convenience store kind of like a 7/11 or a Walgreens. These stores are mainly for people doing a top up shop or for city centre workers wanting to grab a quick bite rather than a full supermarket. That's why it was called Sainsbury's local not just Sainsbury's
This is a Sainsbury’s local mini market. The main Sainsbury’s is much larger they sell everything including garden equipment etc.
You're in a small Sainsburys, one of the local stores not one of their much larger supermarkets. In the larger supermarkets they do a far larger range of items.
When you picked up the anchor tub and said it was cheaper here, you also have to remember we don't add tax at checkout.

Nice review! Bare in mind this supermarket is a small compact Local version you’ll often see in many British towns. The huge stores are out of town generally. These types of stores are basically connivence essentials for locals. Enjoy your stay!
Sainsbury local is a mini version... N more expensive. Its just for grabbing something u need quickly not really shopping main stuff
Tesco, Sainsburys etc started small, high street shops (usually slightly dearer with tailored, pared down lines) relatively recently.
The main, really huge branches are 'edge of town' with free parking (for a couple of hours-see signage) and possibly 'own brand' fuel and sometimes slowish electric charging. Other supermarkets include ASDA (now British again), Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Coop and posh Waitrose. Upstart, ultra efficient Germans ALDI and LIDL are fast expanding, supposedly cost cutting competition in a fierce market.Tesco, Sainsbury, ASDA etc have large online booked time slot home delivery options for a decade or more.
It isn't legal to video in 'private' spaces such as (highly competitive) supermarkets or malls without formal permission (unlikely), but hey, you got away with it!

Sainsbury's local and Tesco's Express are a fraction of the size of their regular stores. They tend to stock just the more common things people are likely to run out of. They are handy when you only need a few items and don't want to have to go through a gigantic store just for one or two things. They are what you would call a convenience store.

"Red 40" sounds alarming. Is it radioactive? You have to remember we're on an island roughly the size of California with at least 3x its population. Produce doesn't hang around in shops much beyond 2 days.
Sainsburys Local is a tiny version of the general supermarket. They typically put them in town centres where there is little room for a full size version shop. The prices in the local store is typically slightly higher than the standard store and of course the selection is much reduced. Our other main supermarkets also have their own version of this - smaller versions of their store in town centres or garages, etc.

That was definitely a smaller sainsbury, all the big stores we have smaller versions of as well, apart from asda i dont think Asda do smaller versions.
Asda have a few petrol station shops, not that many though. They've just been taken over by Euro Garages though, so my guess is we will see a lot more of them in future.
They actually do do smaller asda stores , they are called asda supermarket, there's one in old Swan liverpool and one in birkenhead North by the Raul station of same name

A, 'local', is more like a convenience store than a supermarket. Same produce but less of it and more condensed into a smaller shop.
The eggs were very expensive, Tesco sell a box of 6 medium sized for £1.05. I have always kept eggs in the fridge even when I had my own chickens, I was in my forties when I learnt you're meant to store them at room temperature!
Sainsbury's online shopping service has an excellent range of items far more than just groceries, you choose a one hour slot for delivery. I love that you were so interested and it surprises me how many things are different, like I thought set honey was universal.
Perhaps you only use runny honey for baking so you don't have set honey for spreading?

glad you enjoyed your trip through a local sainsbury (pronounced a bit like sane berries) as may said here these are small local shops, like on the corner to pop into to get bits and bobs from, the bigger markets are much much larger. having shopped in a walmart, UK fresh produce is much cheaper. you really wanted the heinz beans though! Eggs are sold in 6, 12 or 24. they can be caged, barn or free range. i have enjoyed your personal insights during your trip, next time you come to York we can go to Bettys.

Lidl and Aldi are the shockers; they're like Whole Foods but with 70% off. I was in Whole Foods in Houston, Texas, and then in Aldi and Lidl soon afterwards. Honestly, Lidl and Aldi (for a lot of things) are about a third of the price. 500g low fat natural yoghurt in Lidl is 49p. Sixty cents!
I do not care for their meat produce.I bought a steak ...sirloin....and i could not chew the steak.Maybe it is is different in the U.S.I live in the U.K.

Eggs in the uk are not washed because the welfare requirements are higher and standers higher than the US for example in Europe all chicks are vaccinated against e-coli and salmonella, a cost the US industry does not want, it appears they prefer to wash and treat chickens with antibiotics. .

It's the "new normal".....they keep telling us....we just don't listen.
In the UK we don't pay VAT (Value added Tax) on a lot of our food. It's one of the better things we do, especially right now given the costs skyrocketing in regards to a lot of "basics". Doesn't apply to restaurants or, largely speaking junk food (such as crisps, sports drinks etc) but most ingredients to make up a meal is VAT free. It may be why things feel slightly cheaper than when travelling to the US. We should certainly remember this and make sure they don't take it away from us. It's a good policy, among many bad policies so it feels worth mentioning.

I work in a food shop similar to that. If water were sprayed on the produce, nobody would buy it. That does not keep it fresh. It would in fact, make it rot quicker. Produce should be kept cold and dry.
It's a local. It's much smaller, much less options and the prices are hiked from the main supermarkets. It's kinda an exploitative way to cash in when you need something quickly but don't have time to go to the proper supermarket and these are usually located in walking distance from homes and work streets. I'd say the Sainsbury's I go to is possibly 10 to 15 times larger than a local and prices/deals are significantly more enticing. Every product you looked at is cheaper in the main store.
I always go to grocery stores or markets when I travel.
It's a good way to learn about culture and pick up souvenirs.
This is just a small version of Sainsbury's the larger stores have so much more choice.
That’s a teeny, tiny, weeny Sainsbury’s. You’re in a little high street pop in store. The usual big ones have clothes, phones, electric stuff, bathroom stuff and a restaurant. The water spraying just makes stuff look good and go off quickly. You’ll see misting in the veg section in Morrison’s sometimes. Sainsbury’s food is often better tasting than Tesco but Tesco has lots of cleaning product deals, which makes it very much cheaper.
Thats only a "baby" Express community Sainsbury, there are also big ones and huge hypermarket ones. You get much better fresh produce at thise. Sainsbury Local is just a convenience store

These stores are designed to be placed in high density small areas for quick trips and shops. More like a convenience store and not as a large supermarket.
Yea you visited a Sainsburies Local, which is simply a quick small little store for the bare essentials (Tesco also has Tesco Metro which is a smaller version). The bigger Sainsburies supermarkets tend to offer more things like, electrical goods, clothes, houseware (depends on each supermarket too), some have a pharmacy, opticians, some even offer cafe/restaurants, and extra little stores (some have Argos in too which is a reservation style warehouse catalogue store (order an item from a book, see if its in stock, wait for it to get sent to the counter from their warehouse storage and buy right there, instead of having all the items on show, makes for a smaller store footprint, with them hiding the warehouse above / below / behind the storefront, people dont buy groceries from it, its for more permanent things.)
That is a Sainsbury's express it's only a tiny one in the bigger ones you would get much larger sections that do the things you described.
Water mist in the uk is not needed as the products are moved quickly and the product is delivered everyday. For example one supermarket chain advertise locally sourced potatoes that have been harvested from the fields in the early hours of that morning. Furthermore ambient temperatures are not as high. Simply the turn over of fresh stock does not require misting.

Morrisons in the UK tried display counters with sprays for fruit and veg and they weren’t popular so they got rid of them.
Local Sainsbury's. Smaller selection and pricier than a regular one. The supermarkets do everything, clothes, bed linen, kitchenware etc.
The shop you visited is a small local grocery store which caters for the local community. Often in these smaller stores the prices are more expensive as the locations are usually in expensive areas and the rents are higher. They also carry less stock.
I'd recommend you guys try Lidl or Aldi if they have supermarkets around where you guys are staying. They have some great stuff in the middle aisles since they're where they keep some right bargains and they're really well priced compared to Sainsbury's (not hating on them since I do shop there from time to time) also, try Asda, they're owned by Walmart now so we do get some American stuff in our stores
Sainsbury's local is the fill -in stores between the bigger ones. You can get them in big or small towns it is about how close the main big store is rather than the population.
Sainsbury’s is my regular supermarket. The one you went to is very tiny one. The regular Sainsbury’s is quite large and with a huge variety of foods.
Sainsbury’s also has the meal deal( which is I think better than Tesco’s) most supermarkets have meal deals.😊

In the U.K. egg production is strictly controlled, flocks can’t be mixed and numbers are strictly controlled. In the US flocks can be mixed and added to, this can cause cross contamination within a flock. In the U.K. eggs are not washed so therefore don’t need refrigeration.

Don't worry about the quality of the recording, it's the content and thought that counts! :) I'd recommend you invest in a camera with better image stabilization or one option is to buy a gimbal, especially if you're using your smartphone. Only downside is it may be a bit more obvious that you're filming.
As J.P. said, these are just pop in stores for our Supermarkets. So if ever you see Express after the name for example...Tesco Express...They don't pretend to hold untold stock for you to buy like their proper large supermarkets, but they have all the things you might buy in passing to eat or drink on your journey, or even stuff to take home for a quick meal or bite to eat. The size of the store limits them, and limits the selection. So for a proper shop, it has to be a proper large Supermarket.
Yes that was our Sainsbury Local....rhey are the smaller highstreet stores which are more convenienf if you jyst want to pick up a few items. Main shopping is done in the larger stores whete you will need a car to lug-away all that 'weekly' shopping! Lol
Tesco and other UK companies have tried opening these local stores in the USA, I think Tesco had around 200 stores mainly in the west called Fresh & Easy. Tesco pulled out 10 years ago losing billions.
Sainsbury's started in the 19th century, one shop, a Cheesemonger's, soon was nationwide selling only cheese, bacon, ham and sausages. Up until the 60's one had to queue at separate counters for cheese and meat products, Ham and bacon sliced to order and cheese cut the same, the price would be written on the paper that they were wrapped in and paid for at a cashiers desk. A form of early hygiene control. They became a supermarket chain in the late 60's early 70's and until the early 2000's was still a family owned business.
Fun fact: There used to be "Giant" and "Titan" bank noted issued by the Bank of England for circulation in order to back Scottish and Irish currencies. They're no longer in circulation today, but these notes were worth £1,000,000 and £100,000,000 respectively when they were in use. (Edit: Additional information)
Sainsbury's Local and Tesco Express are both what you would probably class a Convenience Stores.
They are mainly for doing small amounts of shopping. For a proper shopping trip we go to the main Stores which are many times bigger, have more choice, and the sell the larger pack sizes
Previous comment absolutely true,, if I turn right out of my street I am 200 yards from a small local Sainsbury. If I turn left I am less than a mile from a huge Sainsbury supermarket.
Sainsbury's Local and Tesco Extra are normally on a main or busy road close to a housing estate. Not in town or city centres. They are not designed for a weeks shopping. They cater for the workers etc. Most fresh products will go in one day. These shops are about the size of a shop in a local housing estate or as you Americans say neighbourhood. I spelt neighbourhood the correct way. Sainsbury's is considered low middle class upwards. p
that cloudy honey is just set honey which is just congealed honey it hasn't been mixed up or anything and its more like a spread because it doesn't drip its very thick.

Eggs - in the USA you wash off the protective layer of the eggs due to less hygienic farming practices in the USA. If you don’t wash off the protective layer, you can keep eggs outside the fridge. In the bugger shops, you can get large packs of eggs.
The open sections are chilled and don't need doors as they have some clever directional air flow to keep the cold on the products. This was just a local small store version. A supermarket for most people is big and out of town/edge of town or even sometimes in old built up areas but almost always away from the old high street (main street!).
Sainsburys & Tesco's have bigger stores that sell clothing and home essentials: i.e. bedding, kitchen equipment, bathroom things like scales. You went to Tesco Express and a smaller Sainsburys.
The Local, Express, Metro etc type of shops are like what you might call corner shops in the UK or bodegas in the US, or I guess convenience stores in either country. Except they're branded with the supermarket name and have a range of items specific to the store branding... They're quite a modern idea where the supermarkets scaled down from their usual giant warehouse type stores at out of town retail parks into small stores within populated areas.
You mentioned strawberry milk.
My favourite is chocolate milk.
I have even had coffee milk which is just like chilled Starbucks coffee at a quarter of the price (the carton is four times the size of a cup).
Make sure to go to Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly where you'll get everything British and at highest quality. Try the biscuit section.

You won’t tend to find a large supermarket in a small town. You usually have to drive to get to the big supermarkets. The one you’re in is more like a Tesco Express and what is called a convenience store in the states. As I was writing this I heard what the young man said at the end.
Go to a Sainsbury supermarket - it's (a lot) cheaper. The same with Tesco Express.
