I never owned a Fender Strat myself but ive played some of my friends American made Strats and actually a vintage 70s Strat (same friend's dad's guitar) but i have to say that i like G&L better from the Fenders ive had the chance to play. The MDF pickups sound sooooo good, and that volcrum bridge works very well and holds tune no matter what u throw at it. Or at least when its new it does. Lol. Thanks very much for your help. This is exactly what I was looking for. It’s the G&L for me. I prefer to solo and I really love a good trem too. I’ve been torn between the player and s500 for ages.
The MFD pickups in the G&L have individually adjustable pole pieces. Meaning you can Eq each pickup by slightly raising or lowering each pole piece. You can literally scoop or mid bump them individually. I also want to echo what others have said. Rolling off the volume a smidge and rolling off the treble to about 6-7 ISH makes the G&L very strat sounding. Ty for a very good comparison video. Stay safe
I have the G&L Tribute S-500 Sonic Blue and that push pull in the Bridge+Neck configuration sounds OUTSTANDING!!! I love it. The Tribute S-500 is the Indonesia made S-500 but it still has the American made MDF pickups.
The nice thing about G&L is that even if you buy a "Tribute series", made in Indonesia, you still get the USA made pick ups. Best import deal on the market.
Great video. For me the S500 wins, but a tougher comparisson would have been to put a Fender Player MIM against a G&L Tribute Legacy...have you tried to compare both? Thanks!

You did a great job, but I think the real problem is the tones that you chose to focus on. I might be in a real minority here, but wit these two guitars I would have concentrated in beautiful cleans, then edge of breakup, then bluesy and classic rock tones rather than the grungy (?) sounds you went for. I think you would then have heard the clarity of single notes even across complex chords and it would clearly have been to the favour of the G&L not the Fender. I have both but admittedly the USA versions (and the Legacy not the S500) and I can say that without a doubt, you'd need to go to a custom shop Strat to get even close to the tonality and playability of the G&L. And even then I'm not sure. G&L all the way for me. And for what it's worth, I really like the slightly modified headstock :) Kepp up the great work.
You can’t get that style of MIM Strat anymore with the ceramic pickups and six point trem you can only get the Player ones which have much brighter pickups than the old ceramic ones . I did a comparison of Teles -Player , Classic Vibe and G and L ASAT Tribute -G and L the winner , pickups are way better than the other two .
A correct comparison would have been between a Stratocaster and Legacy, since the S500 has another type of pickups. Even so, I think that there are so many good buying options, it's crazy to pay for a 21-fret guitar since it's a design out of time and Leo Fender demonstrated it in the Legacy designs where I never use the old 21-year formula frets since all are 22 frets
I disagree. The G&L MFD single coil pickups use a ceramic magnet just like the MIM Fender Single coils so this is actually a pretty good choice for comparison. If he had been using the newer Fender Player series then the Legacy would have been more appropriate comparison since both of those use Alnico magnet single coil pickups. I do agree on the fret thing tho. Only reason to get MIM Fender now days is if the used price on one is really cheap and or you prefer ceramic single coils.
nice run through man. pity you didn’t play any arpeggiated finger picked and plectrum stuff. i was hoping to compare that, with a few chords. i sincerely don’t understand why G&L has not a way more solid presence in the market. thanks for the video ;) cheers from Portugal
I'm leaning towards the G&L... I prefer Ash as a tone wood. I prefer the G&L pickups too.. a question. Did either of these guitars exhibit the dreaded 60 cycle hum??
The trouble with Fender is that they insist on fitting staggered pickups which are totally wrong on todays neck radius which results in uneven volume output which is extremely annoying. With the G&L you get either the adjustable pole pieces or flat set pole pieces which match their necks. With most pickups you cannot safely adjust the height of the magnets without risking damaging the windings, so unless you retro fit new pups to your Fender you'd be better off with a G&L. Fender are basically stuck in the past.
Please dont take this as a critisism of your video but I noticed a slight mistake right at the start when you were talking about the history of Fender & G&L. Right after Leo sold Fender to CBS he actually started Music Man and not G&L. Music Man went into difficulty and was then bought by Ernie Ball and became the company we know today. It was after this that Leo started G&L.
@@scottguitar2 Sorry I can do time stamps because I'm an old idiot lol but its right at the start at about 1 minute 10 seconds or so. You make the remark that G&L was Leo's company after he sold fender but musicman was in between these two. Interesting I've been thinking about getting a G&L for a while and I've decided to order the Tribute Comanche.
Great comparison video. I love Fender and G&L but they are different in a lot of ways. The G&L MFD pickups, the PTB electronics, dual fulcrum bridge are some of the big differences. I use my G&L ASAT all the time- just recorded a CCR cover on my channel- th-cam.com/video/cQ3JNGaRZQU/w-d-xo.html

Only reason to get MIM Fender now days is if the used price on one is really cheap and or you prefer ceramic single coils.

you should have done the usa versions
Did you try turning down the volume on the G&L to match the tone on the Fender pickups? For that "bite" or "pop".
G&L sounds superior
The trouble with Fender is that they insist on fitting staggered pickups which are totally wrong on todays neck radius which results in uneven volume output which is extremely annoying. With the G&L you get either the adjustable pole pieces or flat set pole pieces which match their necks. With most pickups you cannot safely adjust the height of the magnets without risking damaging the windings, so unless you retro fit new pups to your Fender you'd be better off with a G&L. Fender are basically stuck in the past.
G'day 265 here,
The G&L tribute legacy is more closer to the classic strat tone.. the s-500 is I find a more modern aggressive tone..,
I agree my tribute legacy is in the mail can't wait 😊
Please dont take this as a critisism of your video but I noticed a slight mistake right at the start when you were talking about the history of Fender & G&L. Right after Leo sold Fender to CBS he actually started Music Man and not G&L. Music Man went into difficulty and was then bought by Ernie Ball and became the company we know today. It was after this that Leo started G&L.
Not at all, always appreciate having the correct knowledge. Cheers
I can't find the bit you're referring to. Is it the bit at minute mark?

I can't believe you call the po po on the Fender strat saddle salesman.
S-500 Better!!!
ASIAN AND MEXICAN INSTRUMENTS DO NOT COMPARE. TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT CONSTRUCTION PHILOSOPHIES! COMPARE ASIAN TO ASIAN AND AMERICAN TO AMERICAN FOR ACCURATE COMPARISONS.....
That first song riff is basically useless. In fact they all really aren't a good way to compare those guitars.
MEXICO FENDER IS RUBBISH, AND G&L IS TOO HEAVY!!! I WILL GO FOR YAMAHA GUITAR ,THX
