      Just my guess, but it's probably because they're not "pretty". Guitars are like sports cars in that many people buy them with their eyes first. GL guitars often have a meat and potatoes look to them or too vintage looking.

      As a huge fan of Fender wide range humbuckers I suspect a lot of folks (Fender fan types) look at G&L with genuine interest, for example I'm drawn to their interesting pickup designs, then discover that despite similar looking designs many improvements now mean certain stock Tele and Strat parts are not as easily interchangeable - such as those on the guitar in this video. That's often my reaction at least, though the really poor resale is what would probably stop me ever buying new.

    Glenn Campbell used a Comanche as his live performance electric guitar toward the end of his career. How many models of guitar do you think he was familiar with and had played given his long and amazing run as a guitar player going back all the way to the Wrecking Crew studio work in the 60's.........Look up some TH-cams of Glenn playing guitar through the years if you aren't already familiar...... you will be blown away....... If he chose this model for his concerts after all his varied experiences and being one of the very best ever...... I think he probably knew what he was doing, don't you? For that reason alone if no other (but there were plenty after I tried one) I had to get one..... and I haven't regretted it for a minute..... the most versatile array of sounds of any electric guitar I have ever played ..... you could spend your whole life practically exploring the different sounds you can get out of a Comanche...and it's hum cancelling ..... (mine is about a 2007 and American made in Fullerton, CA, so I can't personally vouch for the Asian made Tribute series or the extremely newer models, but I suspect all the USA models are similar sounding to mine and the Tribute series is probably good for the money as they say) I recommend a used model with the serial number reading CLF and only 5 numbers after that. Mine is one of those and built with great precision. I agree with Mindboggle100 in that I'm amazed more well known players don't use them and that they have not gone up in value as much as Fenders. They absolutely smoke any Fenders made after the late 60's, unless you are talking about a very expensive custom shop model. I got mine for less than $1,000.00..... Insane value for that price.

    • @charlie-obrien
      @charlie-obrien 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I've had both the Comanche Tribute series and a 2012 USA with the CLF upgrades and everything you say is true. They are versatile and offer up any number of sounds by using the pick up selector, the added toggle switch and all of that before you even get to Leo's PTB tone system.
      These are incredible guitars and anyone wanting to play everything from the original Strat sounds (hum free) to the most exotic rock, jazz, fusion, funk, country...well, you get the idea.
      Did I mention that you can adjust individual pole pieces on each pick up to dial in a sound that is all your own? That's the last bit of secret sauce that Leo put into his MFD p/u's, that make them unbeatable and the best single coils you ever played.
      Good enough for Leo and Glen...good enough for me.

      Fender's quality control is abysmal. I worked for a local retailer/dealer and I was baffled at the shit that left the factory floors. USA and foreign made. G&L is so much better

  • @charlie-obrien
    @charlie-obrien 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Having owned a Tribute Comanche that then led me to get the USA Fullerton CLF model I can completely agree with what you said about the guitar;
    Leo designed the Comanche, Not to compete with the Stratocaster, but rather to complete it. And that's exactly what it does. You can get any Strat sound you need out of the Comanche, but then the G&L goes so much farther that it becomes like having five Strats with different p/u's, configurations and tone shaping abilities.
    That "Comanche 6" that you showed was sick! If I had one like that, I would never unplug.

    The bass-cut is much more useful than a treble-cut. No matter how dark or how bright an amp. You can correct the tone dramatically. A slight roll-off to 7 or 8 gives a stronger output SC a vintage result. I need to add this circuit to all my guitars.

    I went with Fender on my guitars because I wanted that 70’s CBS era strat that I grew up playing and have been wanting for years but, expensive today, as a kid in the. 80’s they were cheaper. I have no idea what G&L would give me that, or the Cunife pickups in a thinline. But for my P bass, yes I did go with a G&L, LB100 that was a special order P bass with a 7.25radius 1.5”nut jazz bass neck. It ticked all the boxes. I usually plat an SG bass but wanted a 34” scale P bass for flats. The G&L LB100 fixed all my complaints about a P bass. Like the top load locking high mass bridge. But, I wanted the CBS era Fenders or I would have went G&L. If you can recommend one that feels like the 73 AVRI II strat or the 72 Thinline tele.. I will buy them and try them. Bass I am not as picky. A bit more modern is cool with me. Sorry my comment is so long.

    • @jakethebard
      @jakethebard ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@acoustic-union That's the thing though. You really don't get too many features in an American Strat. Sure you get their higher tier hardware and electronics, but at the end of the day there really isn't anything special about the modern Strat. The most noteworthy feature in the American Strat is their micro adjuster where the neck bolts onto the body. Apart from that and a few other small things, the American Strat has pretty much stagnated in any innovation. G&L at least tried to do things a little differently to make the guitar that Leo and Fullerton wanted the Strat to be. Like with the "expander switch" that is offered on some of the S-type G&L models. Now, that isn't really an innovation, many other guitar manufacturers, hobbyists, and luthiers install all kinds of weird and wacky pickup switching solutions, but you know who doesn't really do that, and their name starts with an F.
      The coolest and weirdest thing I've ever seen come out of the Fender factory is their now discontinued "Parallel Universe" line of guitars that had S-type hardware in a T-type body and T-type hardware in an S-type body. I think they may have also done some different things with the Jag and Jazz in that line, but I can't remember.
      Now, I don't think what I just said is a horrible black mark on Fender. Their guitars are some of, if not the most popular guitars in the world, and for good reason. But through that popularity, they have never tried to push themselves to do anything that far from what they have always done. And there is certainly some risk to name and reputation when a company branches out into different ideas. Look at the failure that Gibson had with their self-tuning "Robot" guitars. It was definitely a cool idea, but that was a gigantic dumpster fire.
      On the other hand, look at what Ibanez has done with their guitars. the feature list for even their more affordable guitars is staggering! You can find such a wide variety of body shapes, neck profiles, wood selections, finishes, pickups, bridges, tremolos, and wiring options that almost anyone in almost any budget can find a guitar in their catalog that will suit their style perfectly. And Ibanez has done nothing but grow in the last three decades.
      Okay, rant over.
      Hold on, I need to say one more thing. I'm a giant PRS fan and they can do no wrong lmao
      Okay, NOW rant over.

      Crazy how versatile this guitar is, and all with crisp clean, no 60 cycle hum tones.

      Yes, there is a big difference between USA and Tribute models... But featurewise they are the same. I modified a Jazz/JB pickup set to mimic the Z format. I simply removed 3 poles from each coil. The result was open and round tone for the wound strings. The JB got more bass frequencies and still pushed the front end, but was close to a P90 vibe. A treble-cut circuit gave SC jangle and Straty tones with the git vol rolled-off to 3.

    You need to highten your strings from the neck. It is really buzzing when you slam it! Then you will get much more tone.. 😊

    Good vid, G and L has never really gotten its Lion Share of the market.
    I’m guessing your first language to be German, it would be nice to see you do one in your mother tongue, make sure that you do your own subtitles, do that nothing is list in translation.
    Really enjoyed the video

    Nice guitars but they can be heavy....I was considering one but it was over 9Ibs which is my cut off weight limit.

      I play a Fender Stratocaster and a G&L S500 stratocaster style. The S500 is slightly heavier but, really, the weight difference is not much. The pick ups in the S500, the MFD pickups, are awesome. That this guitar, the Comanche and the S500, were where Leo Fender was taking the Stratocaster when he decided to sell the company, should tell you that this was the ultimate evolution of the instrument he was building.

      @@TheOlesarge As I said...nice guitar and I'd get one if it was light enough. The one I nearly bought was a beautiful natural finish with birds eye maple neck but was 9Ibs 8oz which is heavy for a strat style guitar and as heavy as my Les Paul...which I find really fatiguing after a while.

    Sounds great in the intro. I do not like the tuning post pushing the string down like that. Leo Fender had it right the first time. I like the tuning pegs on my 60 strat that have a hole at the top of the post so I can insert the string into there, and it is perfect. I like running my guitar like EVH did originally before the Floyd Rose Tone Killing System. Eddie would wind his strings upwardly so they end up with less angle over the nut so it would catch less there, and not get hung up on the nut. He put graphite powder on the nut. Yes, it is problematic as your strings want to go flopping around and they can come out of the nut more easily, and there is more noise and buzz that way, but Eddie would harness that noise and use it for good and not evil, plus the strings go out of tune less, because there is less angle there. I think I would get hung up in those pickups on the body. It is all pickups and there is almost no free body area that is not cover in picks ups. I think all of that would get in the way somehow. I don't know. I am not sure. But it sounds great there at the intro. I love Leo Fender, and the Stratocaster, and Telecaster.

      G&L changes color schemes every year and occasionally would have Seafoam one day but if you don’t want to wait - you can contact us on our website: acoustic-union.com so we will make an Option Order from G&L in your favoured colour.
