I have spent 10 years to explore China and still has a lot more to visit, Taiwan is also worth the visit. Highly recommend Yunnan and Shandong province. Each province has its own history and culture, each of them has a different dialect, different cuisines, different landscapes and climates. China is such a cultural rich nation overall.

I think they have watched the Forbidden City from a distance in Jingshan, coupled with the hot weather and crowds, which may be the reason for their abandonment.

The Forbidden City was actually built in 15th century (in 1420AD if I remember correctly). You said it was possibly built in 1368AD which was the year Ming dynasty started from. However, Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of Ming, did not choose Beijing as his capital city. Nanjing was actually the capital of China then. It was his son, Zhu Di, later moved the capital to Beijing. Zhu Di was the third emperor of Ming. He then built the fordidden city in Beijing.
