      @cjeam9199 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gun Nut That’s how it works isn’t it? You call the go around and just go max throttle to throw the thing back up, the climb is then the same as a takeoff in terms of not stalling?

    • @AussieGhost789
      @AussieGhost789 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The decision to go around should have been made early enough to allow them time to take off again. Floating half way down the runway is usually a sign something isn't right, decision should have been made before the wheels even touched the ground, that float was ridiculous. Saying that there may have been a reason why they were committed to landing that we don't know. At least we can laugh about it, doesn't seem like anyone would have been hurt thankfully.

    Because of the nature of how mistakes at high speed are compounded, if they had touched down even half a second later, it would have been 100x worse. It's similar to stopping distance in a car - if you start braking 0.5 of a second earlier, you'll stop in ~20% of the time because you have travelled so much further at high speed.
    I was watching the runway markings and would have been seriously panicking if I was in that cabin! It's crazy how calm it is when you were all fractions of a second from a potentially serious incident! I'm glad all were okay!

    I watched the runway on google maps (runway 23 at Kalibo airport), the road they cross at 0:11 (Jaime Cardinal Avenue) is 55m away from the runway threshold.
    Conclusion : the attendant actually pronounces the words "Ladies and gentleman" exactly as the plane flies over the runway threshold.
    You can also see on Google maps that they have now paved the area after the other threshold where this plane ended up.

    Flaps 1 on landing; 200 kts final approach speed; This landing was doomed at least 5 minutes before touchdown!

    • @milesaharrison
      @milesaharrison 7 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      What the hell is Flaps 5? This is an airbus! Also it was at least Flaps 3 which is 20 degrees of flaps and 22 degrees of slats extension. They certainly should be Flaps Full as the wind is a bit variable and seemingly a tailwind at the end of the runway. This overrun doesn't however really have much to do with the flap position, it is because they floated and floated down the runway, way past the touchdown zone and didn't go around. Also it did look fast so it's likely they never stabilised the approach (leading to the float), this is probably the reason for the very late PA. Piss poor stuff from which ever backwards operator this was.

      It’s pretty obvious what happened here. The crosswind was pointed directly against the plane. So a plane going 170 with a direct crosswind of 30mph, will put the total relative velocity at 200. His flaps setting looks like 20deg, which was causing way too much lift. He ate up much of the runway trying to land the plane smoothly and he paid the price.

  • @chrmantilla
    @chrmantilla 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Some Airlines make that announcement at 10 000 ft, others make it 20 miles out, and others when cleared to land. This pilot made it at less than 500ft, and the crew safety PA over the runway.
    They also did the longest flare ever and landed in the opposite touch down zone

  • @puftepos
    @puftepos 7 ปีที่แล้ว +90

    It seems to me that the flaps were not completely deployed (this is an Airbus from the A320 family, the flaps can get to 35*, but this one seems to be at 20*), so I believe he was coming for the landing much too fast. Because of the speed and the ground effect, the touchdown took place much too late and the braking distance was too long to stop safely within the runway. He should have performed a go around...

      Never underestimate ground effect - I've seen gliders float 2 miles on ground effect without losing much speed at all. you have to rely on things like flaps and gear to introduce drag to get the speed down to break through it - by the sounds of things, the flaps weren't doing it enough.

    @sparshdevyanibhatia Thank you for your comment and you maybe right because of the tailwind condition at that time. I'd like to stress further that in any landing situation, especially this one wherein the runway could only accommodate aircraft no bigger than a B737 or A320, and the pilot is way passed the touch down zone, the only thing is, don't risk it, pull up and go around. Don't do a trial-and-error flying, they're flying a commercial aircraft with about 100 passengers on board.

    you can tell @0:18 there's a major headwind that takes the pane up and the captain fights it pushing the plane to the right...the runway is probably minimum allowed length so he was probably concerned about not having enough power in that wind to clear trees etc on a landing abort, especially if the headwind stops suddenly forcing the plane down...so he did actually save the plane 👍🏻

    Loaded this up into Sony Vegas... the plane passes the first set of 1000-foot markers in 3.61 seconds (277 fps, or 164 kt) and the next set in 3.73 seconds (268 fps, or 159 kt). Kaibo is at sea level, but temperature is probably 30C so airspeed indicator is likely reading 156-161 kt if I'm doing the math right. Normal expected speed should be about 135 kt. Technical: pilot's coming in at Vref+25. Simple: pilot's coming in 35 mph too fast.
