You don’t get to see what happens after Truman leaves the set because it’s now his private life. I always took it as commentary on how we look at the audience of the Truman show as if we wouldn’t watch something like this but in reality our curiosity probably would get the better of us. We end up in the same place as the fictitious audience.
Yeah and there is nothing specific they could shown that wouldn’t be an imperfect sort of let down.
Him and Sylvia on a yacht with a newspaper article about how he won a $10 billion settlement…?
Although I’d just be curious if the friend character would ever try to reach out and apologize for his extra levels of betrayal as each other’s alleged best friend for life.
How many of us watch Survivor type shows? Yes, a lot, but not all, no not all.
I also think that the movie ends on the perfect spot.
Everything in it, except from the moon room and the viewers' reactions, is shown by a camera that is actually a part of the world.
As soon as Truman leaves the world, there are no cameras there to show him anymore. (And none in his head, too)
You could tell a different story of him and Sylvia living their lives from the royalties of the show - but you better should not - no sequels, please.
Everyone is allowed to make up their own ending to that, and that's fine, it even makes the original story better.

@@kimghanson Yeah but watching that is much different. People on Survivor are all consenting adults who agreed to be part of a reality TV show. But this is against someone's will.
"Keep your fingers crossed" means to hope for luck/success/the best.
But, if you cross your fingers while you make a promise, it means that you are not actually making that promise. (It's an old superstition that usually only kids do)
It's quite obvious in the movie she was doing just that at her "fake" wedding.

@@jomojojo6603 i get it, and i only stated that because there are several reasons to cross fingers and in the movie it was to mean one thing but peopke are citing dictionaries to say it meant another. My wife is a filipina, so i do understand, but i wasnt talking to them but to a responder.
I don't know if that superstition is pre-Christian in origin, but in Christian culture the meaning is to "make the cross" in secret, as a sign to God, to say "Okay, I'm sinning by lying here, but I'm not trying to lie to YOU, God, okay, I'm sorry, we good?"

Regarding the finger crossing at 12:38 - There are two idiomatic meanings of crossing fingers, one that suggests lying, but the other that suggests luck. The film is playing on both meanings in a clever fashion. When she crosses her fingers in the picture, it means that she was lying when she made her marriage vows. On the other hand, when Truman says "I'll cross my fingers for you", he is using that in the sense of wishing her luck. But he says it with a tone of veiled sarcasm that suggests a subtext of "I'm saying good luck - but I really mean that I'm starting to be suspicious that you are lying". It's his delivery of the line that makes the double meaning effective here.
"But why they don't allow her to be with him?" In my view, the cheerleader was an actress specifically chosen to be his love interest, while Sylvia was just an extra. The production team already had their plans in place for the show (and I'm sure the cheerleader had a contract in place covering some stretch of time); they couldn't allow a "wildcard" extra to disrupt things.

Truman = True Man - Truman could probably sue the company for child abuse & mental trauma & live off that money with Sylvia anywhere they wanted.
The Truman Show is one of my all-time favorite movies. I was lucky enough to watch it in the theaters as a teenager. The fact that Jim Carrey and the movie got snubbed for Best Actor and Best Picture is still ridiculous to me. It seemed like just science fiction back then, but with the way technology has progressed, a scaled-down version of this could absolutely happen. It portrays a special kind of paranoia. It makes you want to question your surroundings; how much of what we think is reality is actually real? Are you being watched? Is your family even your family? What "truths" you know are actually lies? Truman's gradual process of noticing things and slowly breaking it all down is always fun to watch. There are lots of little details that you'll only catch on multiple rewatches, like the "You Are Now Leaving Seahaven Island! Are You Sure It's A Good Idea?" sign just before he drives across the bridge.
The production is really interesting; several things were changed between script drafts. One of the early scripts was much darker, with the fake setting being in New York, the escape being longer and more violent, including Truman shooting down a helicopter, going through the exit door and sneaking out of the studio lot, holding a flare gun to a tour guide's head, and an in-person confrontation Christof. The sentence, "You never had a camera in my head" was always there, but it was in a darker context; originally, Truman said it as he was about to throw himself and Christof from the top of a building. In the movie's official companion book, it's revealed that the guy in the bathtub died when his TV fell in the water. The Nick At Nite promotional featurette reveals that Marlon drinks all the time as a coping mechanism for what his life has become. You should check out the deleted scenes, too; one shows that Marlon actually found Truman during the search at the end, but deliberately let him escape. Regardless, there's no way the show would've lasted; the actors are terrible at improvising under unpredictable conditions, and Truman's natural curiosity was going to win out over fear in the long run. It's a great message about embracing one's nature, not denying it, taking risks, and seeking truth. And yeah, that's one of the best endings I've ever seen.
Hi guys, just wanted to let you know to fix the year in the description because it is from 1998 not 1988.
I think it's a very clever part of the movie that we don't get to see what happens to Truman. It exposes us to be just like the audience watching him, we want to know what happens.
Also, when we, as the audience, get to make the story complete, after watching him in the "show". Then our minds can run wild, a little goose egg for us.
The truman Show its a masterpiece and one of the most good movies in this part of Jim's career when he was tired of being see him only as a comedy actor and he tried to do something new
I think Christof is by far the most evil movie villain of that decade, especially because he is never really considered as a movie villain!
“What else is on? Where’s the TV guide.” Such a clever commentary on society that only gets more prescient with time.
I rarely see anyone mention that his wife is named for Meryl Streep and his bff is named for Marlon Brando. Marlon and Meryl being great actors, after all.

I am sorry, but didn't Lauren already hate the show, that is the only reason I can think of her trying to woo the main character. But it brings something interesting to mind, maybe there is a perfect soul out there for each of us, but we just haven't been exposed to it yet. :)
I love that this movie came out BEFORE reality TV was really a big thing and it kind of predicted it!
Well, to be frank, it's moreso a call-back to existentialism, and how some people saw the whole world as a stage... remember that quote from Shakespear?
The crossing of fingers has a double meaning in this film. Firstly, (in the wedding photo), crossing fingers while making a promise or vow indicates that you don't really mean it, there is a high likelihood that the promise will be broken. Secondly, it can indicate that you wish, hope or need luck for something, so crossing fingers brings good luck. A lot of reactors I've viewed are unfamiliar, especially with the first use. Is this something that is no longer done? A trend from the past or do people still do it?
It’s still a thing in the Midwest United States for kids to be able to tell a lie if their fingers are crossed, so I’m not sure about anywhere else, but people who grew up round here know this.
I grew up in late 80's, early 90's in Europe and I learned that crossing your fingers while you say something means that you don't mean it. We dont say "crossing you fingers" though, we say "holding one's thumbs, like," I will hold my thumbs for you"
I think they should give Truman millions in compensation for treating him like that, and using like that all of his life.

In the United States crossing your fingers can mean basically two things: Hoping for luck for yourself or others, but also that you don't mean what you say or do. You can say something, but if you're crossing your fingers you don't really mean it.
There are definitely so many themes and metaphors in this movie to.. how so many people behave in real life, not just gaslighting those who don’t know better but shielding and misleading them “for their own good”, ideal middle-class lifestyles that are so perfect yet the subject doesn’t ultimately want, “reality” tv and how people treat it as voyeurism of said “perfect” life the person who has it doesn’t want, people selling out (the actress playing Truman’s wife who doesn’t really like him yet is willing to have a baby with him for the fame and pay).
Should have been Jim's last film 20 or 30 years after. If you know his mental state after his soul mate passed a few years ago. It is him.

Crossing your fingers has 2 meanings (which may be something peculiar to American culture and similar ones). One is where you wish for luck or something fortunate to happen. The other is when you’re lying or not actually intending to keep a promise you’re claiming to make (like swearing that you’re telling the truth), essentially being insincere, like the actress playing Meryl when she “marries” Truman but only her character and for the show (which Truman himself didn’t know).

As an acton hero (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) Harrison Ford wanted to broaden his acting skills so he got Australian director Peter Weir to guide him through the dram "Witness"
Comedian Robin Williams also wanted to branch out into serious movies and got the same director to guide him through "Dead Poet's Society"
And so we come to this move. Peter Weir also directed it... because Jim Carey wanted to try a more serious role and felt that since Weir had shown he could do it before...
So all three got Aussie director Peter Weir to change their careers around
Minor cast members would work a normal shift.
However, the major cast - such as his wife, and maybe even his best friend, are pretty much 100% committed to the show. Which means they are constantly there and they are constantly working. 24 seven.
His fake wife was beyond committed, actually sleeping with him 😂😂. Reminds me of Sharon Stone in Total Recall (sic) "Yeah, I bet she hated every minute of it.." 🤣🤣🤣
They should call the sequel:
"Life After The Truman Show" :)
Once the truman show ends, he gets his privacy, us the audience don't get to see what he does next.
Hypothetical sequel: documentary format with narrator hypothesizing about his exit from the dome, his reunion with Sylvia, & what they've been doing since, w footage provided by traffic cam, ATM cam, cellphones, paparazzi, accidental news footage (they're in the background), security camera footage, etc. Narrator mentions Christof's legal woes & the fact that audience pushback forced the studio for offer Truman 30 years back pay!
My theory about the tour bus is that it normally circles the town carrying fans. Obviously, it never leaves the set (unless thru the stage doors Truman & Meryl were on when the production so frantically stopped them.
My theory is that the "mainland" is usually used as storage/backstage. Notice the so-called "forest fire" never ignited the trees? They'd be too hard to replace, plus the smoke would betray the downward slope of the down!
My theory about the cop who recognized Truman is that he was an actor who wanted a bit part on the show. An hour earlier, he was home watching the show, when he got the frantic call from the production team.
No one ever seems to understand the ending, making me wonder if you listened to Christoff in the intro. He promised no scripts. Yet, as the show progressed, there were obviously scripted arcs, such as the actress playing Meryl constructed to become his wife; & Sylvia contracted to just be a schoolmate/tease. This undoubtedly disillusioned a lot of fans.
When Truman woke up to his reality & began testing the limits of his cage, it became real again. They were rooting for him to escape. When he finally did, they cheered because it felt real & unscripted! Those with friends or family involved in the production knew the studio was panicking! Wanna bet the studio sued Christoff for effing up so badly they went off the air?
The signage behind Sylvia shows she's part of a movement to free him. Her teammates probably staged the falling studio lights & irregular rain shows as a way of indicating "reality" wasn't real.
Unfortunately, Christoff was correct in the intro: we accept the reality we're presented with. He was, at most, a couple days old, when his actor "mom" & "dad" took him into the dome set...so he's never seen a real rainbow, a real eclipse, a real dawn or a real dusk. The moon neither rises nor sets; nor gets farther or nearer! Most of the town are mockups (like the building with supposedly 1? working elevator; or partial sets like the hospital, where real doctors can talk actors thru scenes, or can take over if Truman needs surgery.
Kurt, Truman's fake dad, snuck on the set; & when production realized who this extra was, they huzzled him away.
The fun part is spotting all the cameras built into the sets on 2nd viewing. It never would've occurred to me to look at the low fence along the lawn if not for Truman's fanny shot!

Crossing your fingers originally started as a superstition to ward off bad luck or curses, which is why you do it when you’re wanting something to go well and when you’re lying. Although, really only kids or people in movies cross their fingers when they’re lying. I remember crossing my fingers behind my back when I lied as a kid, thinking that made it ok somehow. 😂

yeaah we dont see him meet the girl because the second he leaves the show there arent any cameras following him anymore, that includes the cameras used to make this film , so we dont see him after he leaves but we know he's now free to live his life.

@@robertv.7924 yeah, there's different meanings with the crossed 🤞. The act of crossing fingers for luck or to ward off ill luck is a well-understood gesture in the UK and parts of Scandinavia, but less so in mainland Europe. I don't know about USA.

I watched few reactions to this movie, and some ppl wonder who would watch this if it was a real thing. But here in Croatia we had like reality show called "Big Brother". Basically put few random ppl in the house for 100 days and let them do normal everyday stuff, and record their every move. And that show was SOO popular, its crazy how ppl were infatuated with it. I dont know if u had that kind of show in Romania. So its really not that crazy to think that ppl would actually watch something with higher quality production as Truman show. Love the reaction!

This is an awesome movie, i remember as a kid watching it saying this was a really good chance for jim to show what an amazing actor he really is. happy to watch you both watch this movie, really ahead of its time and can be put up there honestly with movies like the matrix to help people kind of "plato's cave" be able to convenience of an idea of another perception of reality totally different to what you've been "normalized to" but yea. there was one part of the movie that showed a flashback of Truman as a kid on Christmas and an outsider snuck on the show by hiding in a big boxed present.

Yeah, I dont get why they give hints, or basically explain the whole thing if you can pick up on things well, at the beginning. It's much better to slowly discover that he is on a show at the same time he does.
i think its because they already like Cast his wife for the show so they introduced her as the love interest but he wasnt going for her he was more attracted to the girl he liked and they saw this as a problem because the girl he liked was more of a background character like a TV Extra , just someone to be in the background so they werent sure that she would keep up the act or if she could be controlled. Because as we saw later on she immediately told Truman that everything is fake , she loved Truman and so she wanted to help him realize that his life was a lie

After staring in the last Sonic The Hedgehog movie (2) he surprised many by announcing his retirement on the press tour. I mean he's made his money & he's comfortable with his career but it's sad he has decided to bow out 😢
One thing that I never understand about this movie is why would Truman ever get suspicious? I mean he was born in that world and I'm sure the glitches and odd occurrences must have been happening his entire life, so why would they now lead to him questioning everything? If all he has ever known is that world he wouldn't think what was happening was weird...
Could be they got lazy. If everything was run smoothly before, the little screws ups probably caused him to question things. Like that rain and falling light scenes.
Those probably never happened to him before.
I think at a certain point the puzzle pieces keep on falling and eventually you add them all up and start to heavily question what the big picture really is
Sylvia told him it’s all fake, a set; he found the fallen stage light; his dead dad shows up again; the voice on the radio follows his every move. Based on his reaction this didn’t happen all the time.
There hadn’t previously been lights from the sky and single columns of rain and a reappearing father and stranger police knowing his name, etc.
The production had a big enough series of blunders that it finally pulled the curtain back.
because you cant suppress human instinct no matter how much technology you have in your possession. Human desire and instinct is not something a scientist can ever truly understand under the scrutiny of a microscope or xray machine.

It was the weirdest movie of my childhood - it made me laugh, it made me paranoid - me and my friend were playing 'truman show game' and we pretended a lot of things in front of each other, to see if the other one suspects😂😢😮

I never understood why they tried to make him fall for a specific actress instead of just screening all their actors on set and letting him interact with any of them?
Because it's all about money. They believed Maryln would attract viewers. Like casting Scarlett Johansson over Kristen stewart
Think about his future 'outside'. Would YOU hire him? You know how he flakes off. He's not well educated. Completely manipulated. What kind of job does he get? And how does he get money? Selling a book? Autographs? For how long? The TV viewers were already happy to find something else to watch.
You have highlighted the things that bothered me about this movie. I thiught it was a great idea but they didn't make the most of it.
Ed Harris was nominated for an Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this role, but lost to James Coburn.
I believe the supprting cast always has to do more to be considered for an Oscar, as they really can shine against the main characters.
But I think Laura Linney also deserved one for playing Meryl, the advertiser while pretender.
In the car scene, when they were about to get stopped you could see her showing a glimmer of hope to get out of the situation while trying to keep up her facade against Truman next to her.
And the desperation in the final breakdown with the unintentional fourth wall break - that was far from 'unprofessional'. A great actress portraying a bad one.
