  • A playthrough of Seta's 1993 license-based platformer for the Super Nintendo, The Wizard of Oz.
Awhile back, someone suggested (in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek way) that I play The Wizard of Oz. I knew virtually nothing of the game, but I was down to try it. I abstained from looking at the videos that people seem to love referencing when talking about it until after I had finished it. I wanted to form my own opinion before I took everyone else's on-board.
And you know what? I'm glad that I did. Because really, it's not that bad of a game. Plenty of games out there better deserve being glued to the ceiling with a well-aimed parvo jet than The Wizard of Oz.
It's a simple platformer with a plot and a presentation that vaguely resembles the movie and cartoon it was based on. Dorothy travels through different countries collecting ticket pieces so that she can gain access to the Emerald City (wasn't this the same basic plot setup that we saw in the Genesis version of Beavis & Butthead?), and along the way assembles a motley crew of lifebars that can be swapped at anytime with her own: these damage sponges take the form the scarecrow, the lion, and the tin man. They each have different abilities, but you'll rarely need them. Dorothy is easily the most capable of the group.
The gameplay is generally fine. The platforming is a bit uninspired and is driven entirely by collecting items, but the controls are generally solid and the game isn't very hard at all, though unavoidable, cheap hits can get annoying. The enemy designs are certainly strange, though - most buildings are filled with psychotic La-z-boy chairs, while the outdoors tends to be home to violent topiary, giant birds, wind-up teeth, and other such fondly remembered Wizard of Oz icons. The level designs are simple and generally straightforward, so once you get a feel for the floaty jumping mechanics and figure out the ticket piece locations, you won't have too much difficulty getting through the game.
The graphics are a bit odd - The Wizard of Oz can paint some surprisingly picturesque scenes, but it has a number of ugly moments, too. The Emerald City stands out to me as what has to be one of the least attractive stage designs that I've seen in an SNES game and the intro is hideous, but the farm stages look pretty nice, and some of the weird enemy sprites are worth a chuckle or two. The same can't really be said for the sound, though. It features low-tech renditions of some popular tracks from the movie but they all suffer from gratingly harsh instrument samples, and the annoying sound effects quickly become tiresome.
The Wizard of Oz isn't a great, nor even a particularly good, game, but it's not terrible either. The cutesy graphics would probably appeal to little kids, and the simplistic action makes for a pleasant distraction if you're looking for something that goes light on the challenge. It's completely mediocre, but fans of the movie or of "girl games" that don't star Barbie will probably find The Wizard of Oz to be a solid choice.

I have a theory the game was originally intended to be an RPG/Adventure, but it was too cumbersome and was changed to a simple platformer due to time constraints. That would at least explain the inventory, the broken difficulty, the unfitting valleys, and the fact that there is one character in a jump 'n' run game that can't jump

I had this game as a kid, and looking back on it now, I can appreciate that even though this game isn't great, it honestly wasn't a shoddy cash-grab or, like, a lazy or unambitious game. There are a good number of levels with a variety of mini-games, interesting environments, four characters all with special attacks that could be swapped between for different situations, and even a pretty darn good soundtrack.
There is definite effort on display here to make a fun and interesting game, and while its flaws don't really outweigh its merits, I do at least appreciate now, in 2024, that there was at least some love and soul put into it.

    1. That mortifying version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Ear rape at its finest, murdering one of the most famous songs in existence.
    2. The game's pickiness, like if you don't touch the arrow you restart the level - like what even?

I just played through the end credits of OFF, so this is perfect timing! Anyway, I find this adaptation charming, if anything, I rank it only _slightly_ worse than _Crystal's Pony Tale_ for Genesis! I enjoy that Dorothy's whole crew gets some playability, even if they're useless and their abilities badly underutilized. The art is definitely inconsistent too, but I think there's some appealing settings like the first level. It's not awful, for the most part.
You don't need a brain, a heart, or the nerve to play through this one to the man behind the curtain himself (spoilers), just follow the yellow brick road! But as stated before, I find a certain nostalgic charm to it all. Why? Because, because, because, because, _BECAAAUSE!_

    - Characters take damage differently depending on the enemy. Scarecrow won't take damage from the unicycle corn throwing corns. Or he takes 1 damage from saws unlike Dorothy.
    - You can only carry 2 sub weapons. Still looking into the numbers and use. There's also a max. carrying capacity for each item. 20 for the yellow blocks and you pick up 3 each time. It's all rather interesting.

I would have had them arrive in the Emerald City before they destroy the witch and the Wizard sends them to the get her broomstick.
The witch would have been the final boss of the game.
The game would have ended with a cut scene of Dorothy and her friends discovering the Wizard is a fake and Glinda telling Dorothy to click her heels to get home.

Some of the graphics look nice, while others could have used more tweaking. Some enemy designs are admittedly creative. The music is pretty nice, too.
But, the game mechanics could have used a lot more fixing, particularly with collision (I.e., falling through platforms), hit detection and the unnecessarily scarce supply of power-ups throughout the game. Also, as AVGN said, what good is a character who can’t jump in a platformer? At the very least, give Tin Man some springs for his boots!
So this game could have been decent, but I imagine this was a rush job.

This game does a horrible job (at so many things) of letting players know what are doors and platforms.

You say that kids would've found enjoyment out of this, but for me, I would've been creeped out. Not by any jumpscares, blood or what other things common in actual horror games(which is why I don't really like horror games, they tend to not be able to scare game like how this game would), but moreso the atmosphere, music & graphics. The graphics look bizarre, like someone tried to make them look cutesy for kids, but ended with stuff that looks deeply unsettling... or just ugly looking, but mostly the latter. The music uses soft instruments that can make for some nice music, right? Well, get ready to hear an unintentionally creepy sounding version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, which sounds like we're in a place that is empty & has lost what it once was, essentially making it a Ghost Town. Barren Land sounds like some weird creepy moment in an obscure JRPG for the PC-88, yet it's in THIS game for some reason. The soft bass having an echo of its own that feels so mind bending to the ears, the beginning making one thing that it'll be a peaceful tune before venturing into creepiness & the vaguely rock 'n' roll inspired high pitched instrument that sounds out of place yet syncs so well with the rest of the track. Just... what?
The graphics actually get more weird & creepy when you notice some small details: the stretched out springs stolen from Sonic 2, Dorothy's tiny square dot eyes that don't mesh well with the rest of her, the walking sentient chairs as if they contain once-human souls, the unrelated pink college hat(IDK what that's doing here, I don't remember a scene of the movie having that), those weird flowers on unicycles, heck there are times where it looks there are 2 somewhat different art styles clashing in subtle, yet also noticeably jagged & unsettling ways.
The combination of the graphics & music make for a really bizarre atmosphere that feels so wrong. Like the game feels weird, creepy & overall unsettling in just so many ways. Keep in mind, I've watched the 1939 movie as a kid & I was a big Sonic fan as a kid, so if I were to have stumbled upon a site where I could play SNES games on my browser as a kid & found this, I would've been a little creeped out by it & I would've had some haunting memories of it.
This is further exacerbated by the fact that despite the AVGN covering it, there is little information regarding this game ANYWHERE online. Not even The Cutting Room Floor has a page on it, which I find bizarre because I FEEL LIKE there's something hidden inside this strange game. This game has a weird sinister feel to it & I'm not sure on if it was intentional or not(likely not, but still).

Impressive, for making it that far - I wonder if this may prove GameFAQs wrong on how "difficult" they made it out to be? Definitely looks somewhat better compared to Wolverine: Adamantium Rage and Last Action Hero!

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thanks :) I really didn't find the game very hard at all, tbh. Once you figure out the quirks, it's pretty straightforward until you get to the Emerald City. But there's no question, this is miles better than Adamantium Rage. It's been a long time, but I don't remember hating Last Action Hero. Maybe I ought to revisit it.

I have this game. I can't play it. It's not that it's hard, its' that it's impossible. Yes there is a difference. It's practically unplayable. Unless you have a lot of patience, or you have 87 thousand subscribers on TH-cam and you basically get paid to play through this game, it's not worth it.

The graphics are all right in general, but really, what was up with how Dorothy looked in the opening bit? That was lazy!
The music... I can't shake the idea that if they had a better sound mixer, that it would be much better. It's on the VERGE of being nice, but it's just... I don't know, something is holding it back. I think it's the back notes. They're too emphasized.
