I recently bought one for my nephew, it was in Stockport nearly 250 miles away from Crawley where its garaged. To answer your question about the gearstick, thats normal and was like every other car before about 1990 The gearstick goes directly into the gearbox, on a modern car you have a linkage and when you let go of the gearstick it would self center in the neutral position, on classics you don't get any of that Also you heater, that central vent is a fresh air vent only so you don't get heat out of it, heat only comes out of your side vents to your footwells or your windscreen, the heater valve also works opposite to the way you think....pushed all the way in is max heat, all the way out is full flow cold (so the engine doesn't run hot in summer) Your headlamp problem may be because someone has fitted the headlamp switch in upside down, if they've fitted it the way in the connector it won't work, if not it usually just dirty terminals on the fuse box oh and if you want a rear boot key you'll need a new lock, the lock is from a Metro pretty cheap on ebay good luck with it
