This was one of the most badass moments in any horror story. He finally accepts his errors and that gives him that inner strength that he never had before.
Exactly! The scene is so triumphant that no other ending aside from Leave makes sense to me.
I feel he truly earned his redemption.
@@JoeKing69 100% agreed
@@fadyk85 and BR2049 is a great movie!
@@JoeKing69 one of my best of all time 🙏😃
@@JoeKing69 Funny how leave is the one that makes least sense to me considering Laura ran away from him after murder tape and how if James' already in silent hill that means he died and can't really just "leave".
The effect that music has on somebody whilst they play a game should never be underestimated.
not necessarily when you play a game but when you are fully invested into something (game, anime, movie, book/manga etc.) then a good song just magnifies that emotion or feeling 10X , at least imo
Whenever I play a scary first-person game, I turn the music off, to make it as real as possible. Nothing brings the fear out better than being alone with just sound effects. If you were in a terrifying situation, in real life, you wouldn't be listening to music.
@@CooManTunes Oh come off it
@@GameboyFanatic No. I will go on it.
@@CooManTunes Sad. Silent Hill without Yamaoka's music is nothing.
That moment James finally realized Pyramid Head was his creation.
Holy shit, mind=blown
Billsef Jones damn yeah. this game is so epic
It was Silent Hill's creation, triggered by James' desire for punishment. That's why it kinda looks like a warped image of the Order's executioners, with their iconic red hoods.
Pyramid Head is actually that guy that followed Heather in SH3 everywhere , he is the "red god" from that one book in SH2. There's one guy on TH-cam that explained this really really good and did some pretty amazing research.
@Lain idk man , sounded pretty convincing to me , it all clicked together really well :p
How can something be loud and unsettling, but at the same time almost soothing?
It's like facing your fears after you stop caring about being afraid.
Exactly my thoughts on this song. And it fits the context of the battle so well.
Oh yes, it was VERY soothing. Hearing this music, I was no longer afraid and eager to fight the last battle. Because there was no time to be afraid anymore and - like James said - it was about time to end all this.
@@cyberangel2787 Yeah, but the song doesn't give me the feeling of an action battle but pure sadness and redemption. James just wanted everything to end, he didn't care what was going to happen later. He wanted to be free from his sins for once and for all.
@@cyberangel2787 omg…
Silent Hill 2: a game that simultaneously terrifies you to the point of heart issues, and breaks your heart to the point where it feels like it's being ripped out of your chest.
Yeah, when you play it it's extremely terrifying, and when you're done with it it's depressing as hell.
That's the recipe: first, engage the players/viewers into the emotional struggle of the characters and then, after they are softened and off-guard, distrub the shit out of them.
@@dustmemories9937 Because Fear covers Grief...?

To be honest I was thinking of a Giger themed landscape before reading you.
This track always epitomized SH2 for me. The tense industrial death looming and the tragic, high-low duality of the central theme emblematic of James' own experiences. I used to leave this on repeat when writing darker material, and how inspiring it always was as a stand-alone piece, as well.
Always used to listen to this track with headphones while I designed. Epic AF, like a turning point which makes it perfect for the scene in the game.
It's such a moving piece. In my eyes it perfectly captures this feeling of spiritual torment and punishment. This is what would be playing on judgment day. It's also very sad. Perfect ost.
This song is, beautiful in a horrible way. How is that even possible?
+Aeonized Probably because it's about James fighting one of the monsters he created
That analogy is horrifically beautiful

The worst personal hell possible. Depression and Anxiety.
Welcome to my world.
Dont forget the ol Catholic Guilt.
The higher the degree of pain, the worse the depression and anxiety. It's a fate I don't wish upon anyone.
Yes
Depression is the past. Anxiety is the future.
Always focus on the present, before turning towards the horizon. You should not be prepared to die, yet.
This is when it all falls apart, and James himself becomes the angel of death. He tears it all apart, piece-by-piece. Maria, the Red Pyramids... He destroys it all. The choir isn't heralding the executioners-- it's heralding him.
12 years later and with the remake out, I wish to add onto this.
I always viewed Pyramid Head as the otherworld version of James, like how you could wield the other PH Cleaver, which is actually just the other half of a big pair of scissors. James is Pyramid Head and Pyramid Head is James. He rose to a point where even when faced against 2 Pyramid Heads he did not hesitate to fight them. I believe that them choosing to kill themselves is both them relinquishing their roles as his punishers, and also a sign of respect towards him.
@@JC-fk8kc I'm sure there was a cut idea of Pyramid Head removing their mask to reveal James' face.
The Pyramid mask itself is symbolic. It's extremely heavy, and certainly very uncomfortable to carry around... a literal burden for the monster/James to wear unwillingly to represent the mental burden he has. It's only when he accepts his guilt and stops running away is the burden lifted, represented by the Pyramid Heads' suicides. So I absolutely agree with your take.
Will you face your demons, or will you crawl deeper into the dark void that is your mind?
I'll flip a coin on that: heads I face inner my demons. Tails I crawl deeper into the dark void of my mind
James:🧍♂️🌑
Redemption is a form of betrayal of oneself, redemption means that you are no longer that past version of yourself, and redemption is a harrowing journey to your mind that you (hopefully) will survive.
SH2 is a masterpiece that gave us one of the most broken protagonists in all of gaming, but at the same time, he can fix himself, he can't make the past go away but now he can live with it, he can live in spite of what he did; this game is beautiful
Well said.

My introduction to this was when I decided to take a nap while listening to the silent hill ambience. At one point this specific track came to my dream and I got so anxious that I woke up in my dark room while this was still playing. Truly terrifying soundtrack, probably my favourite.
I could talk for hours about how much I love this game, but instead I'll just let this combination of fear, beauty, and depression take everyone away.
can we just take a second to appreciate this as a composition? like holy shit. theres nothing like this
You’re right. What amazes me is 99% of this soundtrack is dark and intense while this is that one track that is light and epic while retaining some of that eeriness. It’s a standout Silent Hill masterpiece!

This game is a masterpiece. The story is greater than any movie could portray. I doubt that the PS4/XBONE will have any games with this amount of emotion/depth/feeling.

I love the attention to detail. Like this song, it sounds industrial, but also like a choir, that booming church organ type sound. If people look into the lore of Silent Hill, it makes sense why this type of music would be used for this encounter (since Pyramid head is likely one of forms Valtiel takes; it being essentially an angelic servant of a higher power : Metatron / Samael).
Nope, Pyramid Head isn't Valtiel. Pyramid Head is his own thing, created by James's mind to punish him.
+Azelliz Remtora correct
"In Silent Hill 3 the connection to the first game is quite clear, but the point of contact with the second game isn't so obvious. I created Valtiel because I wanted to relate the works of the series through a creature. In the religion of Silent Hill, Valtiel exists as one who is close to the God, and Pyramid Head takes shape of Valtiel's reason for existence. That is to say, the Pyramid Head character was born from the townspeoples' idolatrous ideologies. In the first game, the ceremonial robes were in homage to Valtiel." - Masahiro Ito
Do some research. Lol. Silent Hill actually has really interesting lore if you're smart enough to understand it.
MaxDamageTV I'd need a link to the source you're getting that from, but either way it doesn't say Pyramid Head = Valtiel. He's saying it's an homage. Valtiel's reason for existence is not Valtiel.
We already know some of the creatures are based off of the townspeoples' ideologies, that's never been hard to understand.
Valtiel exists to facilitate the nightmare in SIlent Hill 3, and to ensure the birth of god. There is no such thing happening in Silent Hill 2, and Pyramid Head only exists to punish James.
Not that hard to figure out.

It's the kind of horror that you remember, and then you just kind of sit there, staring off into space remember all the emotions you felt while playing such a game.

@@JohnMarshton777 man, I'm back here after finishing that game for the 13th time, still thinking of the very first things you hear in this game: the slow music and that opening scene. This story really accompanies you forever uh?
Hey now, Dead Space is a fantastic game.
When you look at the whole picture, Silent Hill is just... depressing. You have to stop and think about the physical and mental anguish of a young woman who created and personified personal hellscapes for those who have merely entered the town. James is being force fed his demons through her torment and that is so dark and powerful.
I don't see this track discussed often inside the silent hill community but can we please talk about it for one minute ? I heard it first as background music in a video essay and that's how I was introduced to Silent Hill. When I played Silent Hill 2 for the first time and arrived at the moment were this music plays... I was just fascinated !
There are so much emotions and intensity in this, I feel like it's impossible to put the right words to desbribe how it feels, and the more I try to define it, the less I can. The best thing I could come up with would be "catharthic" but it just barely scratch the surface level.
So many silent hill tracks are exceptional, but this one is really something special and so otherworldly !

You all...the word you're looking for is Catharsis. This song elicits CATHARTIC emotions. It opens the gates for anger, sadness, acceptance, AND defiance, change, moving on...growing.
It's simultaneously Pyramid Heads (the Towns) promise of punishment, pain, and retribution for what he's done. The clanging and clanking in particular to me is Pyramid Heads psychic attack on James.
The eerie, but also hauntingly beautiful other sound is James subconscious answers to Pyramid Heads attack. Mournful, and regretful, but also determined.
So many times I've come back to this track when I've been hurt, and listened to it with silent tears steaming down my face, but with a malicious grin...imagining retaliation and processing aggression so that I can get through my day without going to jail.

I always get goosebumps when this song plays at the end in the Pyramid Heads boss fight. It makes me feel motivated as well. James finally let’s go of the guilt he is feeling over the death of his wife and he’s ready to face his own creation! The story of this game is a masterpiece.
You not escape This time...
This old version of ‘Betrayal’ feels like a true Judgment Day. It perfectly embodies the phrase ‘You reap what you sow.’ I really wish they hadn’t changed it.
This version captures the raw essence of betrayal. When James confronts what he did to his wife, the music, especially the chilling chorus, hits like a shockwave it’s haunting and sends shivers down your spine. I also loved how, in the old version, James screams and his confession blend perfectly with the chorus. It amplifies the emotional intensity, making the moment feel even more devastating. The old theme intensifies the weight of his actions in a way the newer version just doesn’t.
