    Love the twirl! I prefer full circle skirts - I always have. The longer the better. I have had to go shorter in my mobility device - a good rule of thumb if one needs to use a mobility device, don’t have a skirt that is so long it will catch in/under wheels.

    I feel so safe and comfortable with your tutorials. I took my first sewing class in 7th grade, circa 1972, when Home Economics was still a thing, and we only used woven fabrics. I love working with woven fabrics. There is nothing so satisfying as two perfectly sewn armhole facings, interfaced, hemmed, and understitched, in crisp cotton. Sigh…

    Great point on letting the skirt hang overnight. It’s been many many yrs ago but I had decided a chiffon over skirt would be a good idea. I only hung it up because I had been working for several hrs. When I came back I almost fell over. When the bias relaxed it looked like it had been cut with a spoon. Lol. Fyi for anyone that has this happen never remeasure/ cut unless you have it on a person or manikin adjusted for the person. If you attempt this hanger, it will hang different every time you cut & hang it up, like sewing gremlins inhabited the skirt. This skirt is beautiful… love the bias edged seams, Even w/ a serger I do this w/ some fabric, & yes sometimes because I don’t want to change the thread. Lol. Looks great!

    I just found your channel. You call it rambling but that’s typical of we seamsters, right!! Lol And sometimes necessary considering what you are explaining, I find that those learning/ listening sometimes need to hear it repeated to understand. Anyway well done. I specialize in bridal & formal wear which leads to lots of other beautiful things & costumes too. Skirts like these are very popular in my field but also cute for casual. Considering what patterns cost now this is a great money saver. The money saved can be used for beautiful fabric instead. ❤

    I just love your tutorials, Bianca. They're so fun and so easy for me to follow. I've made a few circle skirts before, but love to see how others do it! Yours is gorgeous, so full and such a beautiful pattern!!
    One thing I've done laying out the pattern is to lay out my fabric entirely flat, and cozy a quarter circle pattern into a corner, along the selvege and cut edge. Cut that out, then along the other selvege lay out a half circle pattern, getting it as close as you can to where you cut the first piece. Once that's cut, lay out the last quarter along the same selvege edge as the first, again as close as you can to where you last cut. This leaves just little pieces of scrap fabric, and lets you utilize the maximum of the fabric and the finished selvege edges! The quarters become the back of the skirt (if you do a center back closure) and the half is the front. Hopefully this may help a viewer who's short on fabric!
    Take care, Bianca, and thank you for the tutorial!!!

    I'd love to see a 4 or 6 gore skirt pattern construction. Back in the 80's I had a 4 gore skirt with buttons down the front, and the gore piece had a curve near the bottom. (It was paired with a blouse, buttons down the front, princess seams?, and a sweetheart neckline). I haven't been able to find a pattern for it, so learning how to construct the pattern myself would be a dream come true.

      In this case was the skirt more fitted at the top and then flared out, or was it a fuller skirt all the way along? I don't tend to make gored skirts much myself it's true, to me it always feels like more seams to sew than needed and as we know I'm lazy, but I can add it onto the list for the future for sure! I'm glad you've showed me yes it can be done & no, there won't be a crease/pull at the bottom of the zipper. "It can to work, Mom." LOL

    Bianca, on your Bernina, just above where the presser foot clicks in, there is a small screw which holds the "foot mount" onto the machine. If you loosen - or possbly have to remove - that screw, you can remove the foot and the piece it clicks into from the Bernina and put it onto the Singer.

    I love sewing circle skirts, as they look great, and are so easy to do. The only change I make, is putting an elastic waist band on the skirt. This is because I make "Costumes for hire " , and an elastic waisted skirt is more flexible in regards to fitting various sizes.
    I hem my skirts by machine, but using bias tape does seem a great way to avoid puckers

    • @vickiegentry7124
      @vickiegentry7124 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always add non roll elastic to pretty much every waistband I make and use it to give a little extra ease and comfort, I make my skirt waistbands one inch larger than they need to be to fit properly. I have a very generous backside and I can often avoid having to make the standard “big butt adjustment” (as my teacher used to put it) by giving a little extra space this way. :)

    I’ve made circle skirts and half circle skirts but I still wanted to watch this to a) see you use your new Singer and b) see your zip method again. This will be my way of doing zips from now on because it makes so much sense. I think it needs to be called the TCH Method, or The B Method! The print is lovely too! I used a rainbow sateen bias binding on a navy blue half circle skirt I made for work (back in the day when actually working in an office was a thing!), but I bound it so that it could be seen. Don't know if you already bought a zipper foot for you vintage machine. It looks like you have s low shank. Try buying a low shank foot (adapter?). Not sure what they are called. But the shank adapter has the quick release button for changing feet. Your vintage machine is probably a 5mm and your newer feet from your Brother are probably 7mm. If your Brother feet are 7mm, buy the 7mm so the feet will work on the new shank. The 5/7mm refers to the stitch width. Let me know how this works out for you. We had some one donate a vintage machine from 30s. Like to see how it works out

    “C” is the first measurement she mentions. Mine was 27
    27= 2*3.14*r multiply 2*3.14
    27= 6.28*r divide 27/ 6.28
    4.29 = r

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Amanda! Whether the bias provides any additional floof sorta depends on if the bias is a heavier weight than the fabric or not, I could see how say pre-packaged double fold (which is sorta stiff) could add body to a lightweight fabric skirt. Once could always slip some horsehair braid into the bias hem like this to add more body too. I do usually wear mine with a nylon petticoat from Malco Modes!

    I have a problem in figuring out the waistband situation... I made a shaped waistband, because I wanted it to be 5 cm wide and felt like a straight rectangle would sit a little odd on my waist... but you know when you add seam allowance to the inside of the circle? well, doesn't that make the waist circumference of that seam allowance smaller than the finished waist circumference? and then if I add seam allowance outwardly to my waistband...won't it also make it wider than calculated? so when I will try and pin the skirt to the waistband, the skirt circumference won't match up with the waistband....I hope that makes sense math is hard and my brain is breaking a little bit! I don't mean to ask for unpaid patterning advice but I have no clue how to look up my very specific question. thank you if you can help!

  • @abairdk
    @abairdk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's the first time I have ever seen a Star Wars reference in a sewing video.
    I played your video again because I was thinking long and hard about the inner seam allowance. The inner measurement is the waist measurement, but if you make a seam allowance inside that then it will inevitably have a smaller circumference. This difference is not covered here. You just pinned the smaller circumference onto the waistband. I will have to run the math to see just how much smaller the waist seam allowance actually is.
    I would also expect the hem of a true circle skirt to bunch up. You did not explain why you prefer to hand sew over machine sew the hem.
    Perhaps with a longer circle skirt the hem edge is closer to a straight line, so the bunching is not significant.
    I suppose with a mini or skater circle skirt you would need a narrower hem to compensate for the tighter turning radius.

    I'm not sure if you have discovered that there are feet for our old machines that do have a snap off end and can be used with newer feet. Making a plaid circle skirt tonight so I had to watch this one again 🌻🍄

    I've stayed away from a lot of circle skirts in fast fashion due to the fact they all looked more like costumes than actual fashion I like the way yours hangs and flows it has a casual elegance Thank you for sharing your style and process !

      Thank you Alexandra! They can look very "poodle skirt" if done in a more cliche color/pattern, but I find the weight of cotton sateen does add a certain gravitas to them!

    Please, can you write formula for radius...I've tried a few....it was a really disapointet...

    • @mathnerd3364
      @mathnerd3364 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      R=C/6.28
      R is the radius, C is the circumference (your waist measurement).

    question: if you are sewing a full-length skirt, how would you lay the pattern on the cloth??? if you can find a pre-1990's interchangeable sewing machine foot attachment box, those feet can be used on the singer machine...their feet are all in one piece....you can also find feet for the singer on e-bay for that machine...I found some attachments for mine there!!!

      I show my full length version of the pattern positioned in the same way in my galaxy skirt video, as mine does fit, it just requires a lotttt of fabric th-cam.com/video/SC8L6IHk_DY/w-d-xo.html ;)

    Is that actual bias tape (cut on the bias) or a straight strip used as binding (like on a quilt)? It’s *long* to be bias you made.... wondering if I can use just a straight strip. Thanks. Nice video by the way. I think I could do this. 😊

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! It is indeed bias cut on the 45 degree angle from yardage. I cut strips at least 18" long or so (as long as my ruler) and then sew them together as seen at minute 11:54 . You can also see me cut and make bias tape in my peasant blouse video here th-cam.com/video/6swWlZ-hlfU/w-d-xo.html . I suppose to bind straight seams one could use straight strips, but for anything curved bias is the only way to go in my book! Bias has that inherent "stretch" needed around curves or for curvy shaped hems.

    THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! for saying how much yardage you buy based on the width of the fabric. "If the fabric is 45" I buy at least 5 yards." When I was doing my first project....which also ended up on TH-cam albeit from a beginner's perspective....how much fabric I needed became an issue. Hence the two different fabrics in the video. Love all you do so much I'm kinda gonna copy your dress patterns/look.

    I bought a bunch of cotton twill from Mood in fall colors to make circle skirts with, do you think they are heavy and tight enough to not warrant hanging?

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm! I have used their organic cotton twill and I would thiiiink so? It really depends on how tight the weave feels, as I fear to make a blanket statement! If they are all of similar weight, I would just hang the first one and see what happens, then make a call for the others eek!

    Love your videos, been binge watching some of the ones you posted before I found you. Your voice has been a welcome calming addition to my life in what has been a rather crap week. Because of you I am starting to dabble into 40/50's vintage which isn't something I thought I would do! I do have a question as a noob vintage wearer, are you wearing a petticoat under your finished skirt at the end or is that just due to the hand of the fabric?

    What beautiful fabric! I do love a good circle skirt. That was a good tutorial, especially the bias taped hem.
    I’m going to make one one of these days. When i’m feeling rich enough to buy 5.5-6 meters of fabric. In the mean time i’ll live vicariously through yours 😁
