    Hi, I just wanted to thank you again for explaining how to transform it into a loft bed. We did what you advised, including the fitting to the wall for safety reasons. We built a large drawing table below + some shelves, and a smaller desk on the other side of the room and my daughter was extremely happy and surprised, as we did it while she was away on vacation. Thanks again!

    Can you skip the bottom bunk and just do the top. I want the space on the bottom for my son to have a fort and more space to play!! Would that compromise the sturdiness of the bed?? A

    I've see a lot of hacks where the bottom bed is removed and a crib is there. Will this bed be stable without the slats for the lower bunk?

    Hi,
    can you please help me out here. We have the same Ikea bunk bed frame, but my daughters are not using it, therefore I would like to transform it in a loft bed high enough to put a desk below, as the room is really tiny. With the standard fitting, the upper bed is too low to accomodate a desk below.
    Any idea how I could fit the bed base of the upper bed higher? There's no problem of safety, as it'll be used by my 14-year daughter, so no worries about falling our of bed.
    We're not in the best financial position right now, so I'd rather not buy another loft bed frame, but transform the existing one which is not even one year old!
    Thanks a lot!
    Miruna

      You can get some 2x4s at Home Depot or scavenge some. Each "leg" of the bed, including the ladder part, get an extension piece 3 to 4 feet long, but most of the extension is mated to the bed posts along the post, sticking down maybe a foot to 18" longer than the original bed posts. So it is like stilts attached to each post but the stilt just run along the original post at least twice as long as it extends the bottom, and use screws, not nails to attach the extensions to the posts. The lower mattress support cross slats are removable but it's a hassle. With the bed flipped on the side, they can be hammered from the bottom of you strike with a rubber mallet close to the edges. If you remove the lower front bar, it weakens the bed but if you use long screws to attach the upper bed frame to the wall, at studs, not just in the drywall, it will help stability a lot.

    Do you have to use IKEA mattresses?

    • @cleomathew
      @cleomathew 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No you don't. But the mattress needs to be 5 inches thick or less. Otherwise the child will just roll off the bed.

      Quy Tran I can't remember for sure, but two sounds about right. It is easy to mix up some of the pieces on that and it does not seem too be a large item until you get to putting it together.

      Matthew Villanueva yeah, but that's cutting it close, I would suggest reinforcing the corners with regular lumber.

      +MAYBELLINE ASH The carpentry would be easy, but the top most bunk, probably not ruled to be safe.

    which bolts do you use to put the frame for the mattresses on to frame of the bed

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Margaret Sheppard You generally don't bolt a mattress or box spring to a bed, it is simply held in by gravity and the shape of the bedframe around it.
