I had a Saint Bernard many years ago. He was extremely gregarious. He never met a human he didn't like and want to touch him. Then I got pregnant and that all changed. He knew I was pregnant before I did. His behavior changed completely towards strangers when we were out on walks. He became very overprotective of me. About a month later I went to the doctor and found out I was pregnant. Once I had my daughter, his behavior reverted right back to the same old goofy friendly wanting everyone to touch him kind of dog. I truly did enjoy the breed. Be prepared for a lot of slobber and a lot of hair

I can attest that Newfoundlands are adorable. My grandpa’s brother (rest in peace both of them) had one bc he rescued it from a highway median. He thought the dog was a dead bear and was going to move it but found it was dog severely dehydrated. He took the dog to the vet, got him back in good health and he became the family bear named, appropriately, Bear. Sweetest dog I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. I was a freshman in high school when I visited and I’m a pretty short guy (5’3) but that didn’t stop Bear from plopping in my lap like a little puppy. He looked just like they one these guys showed and now I’m filled with happy memories of the dog and grandpa’s.

Word of advice? So long as there is a cool place for them and a decent enough yard to romp in, they’re usually surprisingly good on space. They like being outside any time its cold enough, and when it’s too hot outside they just want to lay in the cold air most of the time. But as with any dog, you gotta watch out for those puppy years

English mastiff owner here! They’re phenomenal dogs, but like with any large breed, please don’t consider taking one in unless you’re very financially comfortable.
If you travel frequently, you need to make sure that you can either pay for someone to come to your home to dog sit (with a couple extra visits prior to acclimate them to that person), or spend a small fortune on a facility equipped to accommodate a dog that size.
Same goes with vet bills! Because it’s a lot of weight, we found that they’re very prone to joint and hip issues, and vet bills are often triple what they would’ve been otherwise due to larger medication doses and specialized facilities. Believe it or not, most veterinary offices aren’t equipped to perform procedures on animals over 150lbs (coming from a former kennel tech for a highly recommended animal hospital). Always make sure you disclose your breed and their size when making an appointment anywhere (grooming included) so they can tell you what to do to keep their staff safe. Making an animal that size uncomfortable, especially when their owner isn’t in the same room, can become very dangerous very quickly no matter how well trained your dog is. Expect that you’ll be required to be there for the duration of the appointment, even for services like grooming where you would usually expect to drop off and pick up your dog.
Overall, they are just a liability to anyone outside your family because if they get spooked and decide that person should be dead, nothing short of a firearm will be able to change their mind. Training needs to be done early and very consistently for even walks around the neighborhood to be safe. A dog like that can and will overpower you if it decides to, so you need to make sure you have control. It just takes some extra planning and financing to make sure everyone else involved in caring for your dog stays safe.
And yes, your home will be coded with blond fuzz even sweeping multiple times a day - there’s nothing you can do about it. And don’t even get me started on the strands of dried slobber all over the coffee table.
We love our Angus! He’s a great dog, but more expensive and time intensive than we anticipated for having such a “chill” reputation.

I had an English Mastiff for 11 years before cancer got him. He was honestly one of the easiest keeping dogs I've ever had. Yes, you will want to start a savings account for their healthcare. And yes, there are considerations if you want to go on a vacation without them. And he did once almost sit on a kid😅 But with their personality, they are very easy to train. You just need to be confident and consistent. Moses was 250lbs and sharing my 8 year old daughter's bed. Raised right, they are amazingly careful and sweet.

My first dog was a presa canario. And man those dogs are a rude awakening to first time dog owners. Unfortunately she was extremely aggressive towards other dogs and people but our property was massive so she would get plenty of exercise. We had to pour concrete in the bottom of the fence to prevent her from digging her way out. When we had parties she would be locked in her large kennel. And if someone was going to visit they would need to let us know so we can put her in the back yard. I wish I could’ve done better but with my family she was always a sweet gentle dog. Never once growled at my baby brother or got food aggressive towards us. She lived for about 9 years until she got cancer and after thousands of dollars and alot of pain and crying we put her down. I still have her ashes. Miss you alot Nini

Also, XL Bullies are amazing. Big monetary investment to buy a well bred one from a great breeder, but they are so easy to train and just amazing dogs! They are so similar to mastiffs where they don't require a ton of excersize each day but will thrice with a long walk and a few short training sessions sprinkled in.

I’ve had an English Mastiff and he was a great dog, but nothing compared to my Newfies. The best dog I’ve ever had was a male Newfie. He was over 180 lbs of love, intelligence and an outstanding protector. I currently have a Great Pyrenees and he’s a good boy, but far more untrusting of strangers, especially men & hyper vigilant.

Greater Swiss mountain dogs are amazing. Great with kids, other animals. They protect only if there is a threat. You can have company over and don’t fear how your dog will react to them

I had a English mastiff/American pit mix. He was one of the best dogs ever. 130 lbs of cuddle buddy, great with my children when they were little, and protective. The only downside was he didn't realize how big he was and would lean on you and damn near knock you over, and For some reason he hated fireworks, he would try to eat them once you lit the fuse.

I grew up with Newfies. They're really gentle if raised right. My last Newf, Ralphie, seemed to even completely understand human language and we even had conversations together. He was a bit of a drama queen, however.

I have lived with all 3 of those. My parents had 3 Saints when I was a kid. As an adult, I’ve had Danes, Newfs, and English Mastiffs. Training a Newf is about the same as the others. They all have their quirks, but overall they’re the easiest to live with. I’ve not had a problem with any of them barking, digging, etc. They’re exceedingly strong and can out muscle you. So you have to start training early and be consistent.
