If they say "not bad" it means you did satisfactory. The difference is pretty interesting. So even if his mom didn't sound so enthusiastic, inside she really thinks that Stephanie did a good job

Do you leave the food cooking and go away to do something else? Everyone I know that burn food while cooking do that plus they have the fire way too high. Also not following the steps properly or not measuring the ratios of ingredients. Cooking is not too hard when you get the hang of the basics, trust me! But it's the intent that counts after all.
