yes he studied freddy's inflections, etc, but he naturally sounds as close to freddy as anyone will ever get, w/out even trying. that's his natural voice, something he was gifted with. he's amazing! he brings tears to my eyes & he brought celine dion to tears also. if only i could find a robert plant, or paul rogers or steve tyler sound alike for my band.

“Rat” you must be tone deaf if you have listened to downhere and not noticed how close he sounds like Freddy! On How Many Kings, in particular, you can hear it. The first time I heard How Many Kings, I looked at my daughter and said, “I didn’t know Freddy Mercury sang this”. After the song ended the On-air DJ even commented on how close his voice was to Freddy.

I have been a Freddie and Queen fan since I can remember (easily since i was 5, and i'm now 42). In all those years I have heard every song they recorded, in various formats (studio and live) a myriad of times. (to the extent that I could pick which concert a version of song was from by various adlibs). I was absolutely blown away when I heard Marc Martel's audition for the Queen Extravaganza and have followed him since then.
I, sadly, missed the chance to see Queen in 1985 when they toured Australia / NZ, and i passed on the chance to see Queen & Adam Lambert a few years ago, because to me Queen should sound a certain way (and as good a singer as AL is, not sounding like Freddie would have spoiled the experience)
I was fortunate enough to see his Ultimate Queen Experience concert when he performed in New Zealand this year, and it brought me to tears. Marc expressed that he and his band wanted to focus on the sound that made Queen and Freddie special, and the concert I saw was note for note perfect to my ears.
Your comment about Marc being like Freddie reincarnated was my thought as well when I heard him live. And it brings me great joy to now have so many people beginning to experience Freddie and Queen's music under a whole new generation.
Thank you for your reaction video. It's great to see some insight from someone in the industry. From all the songs Marc has recorded and uploaded to TH-cam .. my personal favourite is You Take My Breath Away - give it a listen when you have a moment (or even his "Mercurotti" - Nessun Dorma as performed by Marc, in two parts as Pavarotti, and Freddie).

That Marc had been part of the vocals for the film was true, up until late in production. Word is he angered Brian May in some way, who then asked the audio production crew to pull as much as was possible of Marc's work and get as much of Freddy's live work as could be used. Not because of Marc's quality at all. This comes from one of the production guys (Brian Peterson, 31 years in film audio) that worked directly on this film. I was fortunate to have a conversation with him. Also, according to him, Rami doesn't have any vocals on this other than speaking to the best of his knowledge.
    Here's the conversation -
Brian Peterson - Rami didn’t sing anything, as far as I know, John. They used as much original Freddie as possible, utilizing outtakes and alternates and all original audio from Live Aid, rerecorded at Wembley through the PA and mixed with the master recording. Marc was initially involved, but we were told he had a falling out with Brian. Not sure how much, if any, of Marc’s voice made the final mix. More stories from the sound stage, but that’s the gist of it. I worked on the audio portion of the movie.
John Shepherd - It was Marc who said it in an interview that he's in it.
Brian Peterson - I know, John. That’s where the falling out supposedly happened. I was told he claimed to have done more than he actually did and that didn’t sit well with Brian May.
Brian Peterson - And for the record, I think he does a heckuva job singing Freddie.
John Shepherd - I know this much. He's a fabulous vocalist. He can play piano and write - all the things that Freddie did. I sure would have liked to hear original music with him as part of creating it.
    Brian Peterson - Amazing vocalist!!!
Brian Peterson - Like I said, I’m not sure what’s Marc and what isn’t in the movie. I just know we were told Brian May was unhappy with HIM, not his performance, and wanted as much as possible to be rerecorded with Freddie’s outtakes.
John Shepherd - I appreciate you chiming in. I've been a fan of Marc since the 1st Downhere record. I would venture he's still very disappointed they took AL over him, and are their own cover band with a guy who is not capable of being a principal writer for them. Nice to meet you. Brian.
Brian Peterson - My pleasure, John. I’m very lucky to have worked on the movie, my personal favorite project in 31 years in this business. A friend of mine told me about Marc, and when I brought him up on the stage, they shared the story I shared here. I haven’t seen/heard anything “Queen” has done since they ventured out with Paul Rodgers, which I didn’t much care for, other than enjoying seeing Brian & Roger on stage again.

I personally think that less talented singers have a Grammy or a star in Hollywood.

That is absolutely true. FAR less talented people have billions of views on TH-cam. I would love to see Marc Martel to be one of the first to bypass the garbage that the music industry has become, and just rise to the top on his own talent.

Grammy's in my opinion, along with other cliquey deities that proclaim themselves our cultural arbiters of what is "the best in [_____]" have little to do with quality and everything to do with politics, popularity (with the right people) and revenue. I thought I read that Marc Martel won a Grammy & other awards when he had the band.
⭐️A star on Hollywood Boulevard⭐️(is there any room left? LoL I think they had to start up the side streets) is easily got -it takes a couple of recommendations from notables in the industry & $5,000 -shit ..can't remember who it was we raised the money for so they could have their star...it was a long time ago the price is probably higher now in accordance with real estate value. xoxo

Marc has a similar chin and as you alluded to some similar facial features as Freddie (not to mention some overbite lol) and those things combined probably contribute to sounding so similar. So much of it is genetics, he could count mom and Freddie (oops mom and dad). ;)

Yea, watching and listening to Marc gives me hope as a singer. I’m kinda naturally talented in singing since I never had voice lessons either, but I can use vibrato and good breathing technique naturally.

If you missed it go back to the bridge between the first section and the opera. Marc's ad lib is hilarious. He looks directly into the camera, breaking the fourth wall, and rolls his eyes with a facial expression that says, "OK folks, now for the really hard part. One take. Can I do it?"

  • @pjmiller8632

He is so amazing....nicest, most humble guy too. Roger Taylor said that while standing next to him and listening to him sing while closing his eyes, it was like standing right next to Freddie again - saying it was 'incredible really'. What a surreal moment that must have been for Roger - to hear that voice up close again. Marc has always been told he sounds like Freddie. 😊
