Jacob never left Vietnam, he died soon after the opening scene. The term Jacob's Ladder is a double meaning - one is the explanation the chemist gave about the drugs, the other is Jacob's journey to the afterlife. Everything that happens in the movie from the opening scene to the closing shot is what he sees in his mind as he's dying.
There are videos out there that explain more, and some of them I think are over explaining or just speculation, but Danny Aiello (the chiropractor) is supposed to be his guardian angel. He tells Jacob about letting go of his life and attachments in order to get him away from the evil forces trying to stop him accending to heaven. There's definitely more to it, but that's the basic gist of the story. Weird, crazy, unique movie that I haven't seen in a while - glad you guys watched and good discussion as always

The chiropractor/angel's line about letting go of his earthly possessions so: "the devils will become the angels, freeing you" is one of the best movie lines to me as I get older...

There are many videos of people breaking down all the symbolism in the movie and there is a lot of it, from the names of characters, to the themes throughout. The movie gets better and better upon second and third viewings.

Damn. Bralik was right. That was indeed Suzanne Shepherd, who played Carmela Soprano's mother.

I've just realised: I think they maybe based the appearance of the main character on John Lennon (another clue that he's dead); he's got the same glasses; similar hairstyle; similar military style Sgt Pepper jacket on the train. His army friend is called 'Paul'. It's set in Oct' 1971 which is the month JL moved to New York. And The Beatles were employees of EMI who made radar technology for the British Military in WW2... I could go on. But I could be wrong.

'Lost Highway' (1997) by David Lynch would be really good one to do I think. (Not exactly a horror but it's deeply mysterious.)

Always made me wonder about his final moments. My uncle david was k.i.a in Vietnam. Just 6 weeks after he got there. Was in a firefight and actually stepped on a landmine that had been placed for the ambush. He was a product of the 60s.. he was drafted and didnt want to go. His first week there he sent my dad a poem he wrote called "the young die first" along with a peace symbol he always wore.. told dad he had a bad feeling that he wouldnt make it back.. dad got them in the mail 3 days before david was killed.

Watched this back in the day in the theater. It was quite the ride. This movie was made to be watched on the big screen. It is a fantastic film. One of the top best horror films i ever seen in my life. The final two scenes in particular are heartbreaking. The movie is packed with great actors that later went to greater claim. The music in particular is absolutly fantastic, composed by the great Maurice Jarre.

The Machinist (2004) is another good psychological thriller/mystery starring Christian Bale. He lost 62 pounds to play that role, and the following year he gained all of that weight back and then some to take on the role of the caped crusader in Batman Begins. The year after that he played a POW during the Vietnam war in Rescue Dawn which he yet again lost a bunch of weight for (55 pounds). Both of those movies are great imo and definitely worth a watch (I assume you've already seen Batman)..

'The Haunting of Hill House' is a majorly good horror-type series to do. (I've watched a lot of ghost/supernatural series recently and that one tops the bill, IMO. It's what got me into them.)

Both of my uncles went to Vietnam. They both volunteered, to escape an abusive household. The older uncle was sent back to the states for a death in the family. The younger uncle remained in Vietnam, finished his tour and came back home.
According to my aunt, he was never the same after the war.
After 2 failed marriages and alot of demons, he shaved his head bald, went down to the beach and shot himself in the head.
    He was 45 years old.

Late comment, but this movie is actually a modern day adaptation of the Bardo Thodol, or Tibetan Book of the Dead. One of the stages of 'Bardo' (the intermediate state between the moment of death and the soul moving on) consists of karma based hallucinations, and the soul going through the process of being stripped from its attachments so the person can finally move on. The movie chose to represent that through more Christian based imagery and ideas, as well as imagery inspired by the works of artist Francis Bacon and photographer Joel Peter Witkin. The actual framing story was inspired by a 19th century short story called 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge'.
