    Finally !, Someone who shows how to remove a sticky back from the TV. Sounds simple, but if you've never done it before, it's a headache . Thanks so much for the info.. 5 stars !

      This is a very trivial repair that any professional knows since 2013. Not only it’s a failure, it’s a bad design. When you find DO-201 diodes in parallel, just because they didn’t want to use (or it didn’t fit) a single larger diode, it’s a bad idea. This is a very recurrent failure in Vestel and other brands. My solution is NOT replacing the bad diode, neither replacing all 3 with same new diodes, because it’ll happen again. I replace them with a double schottky barrier in TO-220 package with a little heatsink, with the same (or more) power than the sum of diodes power. This never fails again.

    Nice video man! It's a bit of a random suggestion, but I thoroughly enjoyed that video with the cheap Chinese led light. I think it's a marvelous concept, buying cheap, poorly designed electrical products and inspecting them. You make it both interesting and entertaining!

    Hey, that's a great video boyo. I tend to cheat and go straight to visual check then the hard component... diodes, rectifier, caps, etc. Cheers for sharing. 😊 PS, you look like one of my good friends. 😁

    I have this set - 19" 19LV506, in white, tv and dvd combo - it has been a great tv. It replaced my 1984 Mitsubishi CRT tv, which had a slighter better picture - with the LCD you can't lay on the floor playing with dog and see the tv well, you have to be more "straight on" to view the tv correctly. It has never needed a repair on tv or DVD, and the picture is about the same as on my larger Vizio in my bedroom. Plus, I love the "white" look - I hate gray and black as tv bodies - Keep in mind as I write this, the tv is probably 10 years old or so -

    IMHO for the learners point of view, the camera should have been on the points where the readings are being taken, a short is being detected. For the meter readings the viewer can rely upon your word.

    Good video with plenty of explanation and visual.
    I would be interested in a video that explain the power supply board usual logic. The different schematics on them and what are their use. I heard you named them (filtering and so on) but I don't really know what is their function. Or if you know some website with tutorial on that it would be nice!
    Thank you for the video, I have a similar broken TV here and I might get lucky with the same fix!

    Gread vid, can this TV be coverted to run on 12v dc?

  • @uK8cvPAq
    @uK8cvPAq 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    These crappy Vestel sets always blow their secondary rectifier diodes, its actually because they get vastly overvolted for very short periods at start up. The general consensus on the repair forums is to install 400v+ fast recovery diodes and thermally bond them to help take care of the increased thermal dissipation.
    Thank goodness the one you serviced didn't blow the primary IC too which usually happens when a 24v rail rectifier shorts.
    Search for the badcaps thread called "Why so many Vestel 17PW25-4s failing with shorted diodes - Answer from PSU expert!" for the details.

    • @viperfrank
      @viperfrank  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah its not the first one i have come across.
      the cheap digihome tv in my kitchen is made by vestel, im just waiting to see how long that one lasts before it needs repair.

      viperfrank You'd think by now that manufacturers would be able to produce a low cost long lasting TV especially with all the electronic waste awareness we have these days. But then they wouldn't be able to sell you a new TV in a few years!
      Ah well at-least it keeps guys like us in business.

    • @gillesgomez3091
      @gillesgomez3091 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for this video James. Well done, well explained. Such videos are a great help.
      I had exactly the same problem (faulty Vestel PSU) on a Toshiba 24W1333G.
      This TV is used in a country house. The first time, it failed after only one month of service and got repaired under warranty. The second time, 2 weeks ago. This 2 year old TV was used maybe 2 or 3 months in its life. Unacceptable.
      So I decided to repair it myself, and discovered the diode just close to the one which got changed previously was also in short-circuit. Following the thread in badcaps you mentioned above, I replaced all the original SB5B0 Shottky diodes by ultrafast STTH5L06 (600V) and the UF5401 by UF5404.
      Hopefully this will be the solution that will improve the reliability of this Power Supply Unit. That said, they used up to 4 DO201-AD diodes in parallel instead of a unique high current high voltage TO220 diode with a heatsink. That cut costs, but here is the effect of such a bad design: this PSU is not reliable at all!

    This is a very helpful video and as others have said you are a great teacher. I have a 40 inch Toshiba TV that looks to be about roughly the same vintage as the one you are working on (mine was purchased in 2008). It works great except it no longer retains the settings I entered during installation (so each time I power it on, I have to set it up again). I'm guessing that the internal battery that retains these settings no longer holds a charge. Is this the sort of thing I could fix on my own? I'm reasonably good with electronics (I have replaced batteries in smartphones and built my own PC). Do I need a soldering iron to replace the battery? I am tempted to unplug the unit and open it up to take a look. I've searched online for this issue and have not found a repair guide.

Also you can't change channel or use any of the functions on the remote, you also can't change channel, sound etc via the buttons on the tv either. I know I'm asking a lot, but have you any idea where to start looking for the problem? Thanks in advance.

    Great work but the wick to "clean the pad" is really not necessary. Those pads were nice a clear as is and will take fresh solder no issue.

    "390 Volts ! that's quite high !" That is because of the PFC. A PFC is a small DC-DC converter whose only purpose is to make the buffer-capacitor look like a resistor to the power-company. The EU demands this. Which Brits don't like.

    What's the best way to fix a Toshiba TV with the USB over current status popup? TV is out of warranty and too expensive to repair professionally. I've seen some youtube clips talk about IC160 or chip IC161, but they are not in English so I don't really know what they did.
