  • I'm self-admitting- I didn't do my best job at filming this one. It's exciting and takes all my effort to not kill myself while the engine is on the hoist. You'll have to forgive me as I attempt to start up for the first time. Enjoy!
Filmed on iPhone 13 Pro. 4k24.

Man,that sucks.....Can you pull the cam sensor out and put a drill on the drive like old school?

Well shucks man. x3 on spinning the oil pump up with a drill. honestly good practice to do that prior to setting the engine to make 100% sure nothing is dry on initial start up and oil is going where it needs to go. Also did you put on the old flex plate or new one, the 4.0's rely on the cut outs along the reluctor wheel of the flex plate for timing so if it's the wrong flex plate it won't start

Yes ^ Prime the oil system off the dist./cam sensor gear. Cranking the motor will not spin it up enough to pick up oil through the pump.
Be patient and K.I.S.S. Were Jeep owners after all. I’m pulling for ya man 😎

My daily driver is a 94 XJ. I installed a good used motor and later removed and cleaned the transmission, transfer case. I like everything about the body style except the lack of a sun roof. At the motor install, I missed a wear groove that was found to the torque converter to seal. While I ordered and installed a sleeve, I would recommend replacing the converter to be certain of long life as the engine and transmission, transfer case are quite heavy and bothersome to remove and install. I now plan to refit the old engine to a stroker build. Where I can select a cam to maximize power.
I find this engine solid and reliable. For anyone meeting this project, I recommend addressing the throttle to transmission kickdown cable as new. I found the throttle attachment plastic and brittle. Easy to break. And where the crank position sensor should be replaced with a good quality unit, mostly as a bit difficult to service after install. The oil filter 90 degree must have a new o ring at any service. Take care at starter nose as some lesser quality components have poor finish to machine tolerance. At install, they may shift slightly to dreadful alignment function. Accept no fault at fuel rail or delivery lines.
At the task of powertrain, it is important to take particular care at stands and lift operation. These components are heavy.
I found this project very satisfying as great power and reliable to all terrain and weather. While I kept everything stock, there are whole pages of aftermarket kits and components to add as mods. Novice or skilled mechanic, I would recommend this project as the completion has real value and solid, useful long life. Driver, start your engine.

Was the oil filter pre filled before screwing it on and did you crank for longer than seen in the video? It takes a long old time for filter to fill up at cranking speed. I second the suggestion to spin oil pump with a drill.

Like most everyone said here prime the pump. It takes a while to see oil up top from just cranking.

The pump was primed. But now that it’s been sitting for months I’ll probably prime it again to get oil flowing before running in the cam.

@@motolayne Nice. You'll get it. A stroker in an xj is a lot of fun. I had the chance to drive an xj with a really well built stroker 4.7 and it ripped. Actually moved when you downshifted on the highway like it should. I think it had 33s with 373 gears on an ax15.
