I've watched a couple of your clay bong videos, pretty cool stuff! I suppose that there is a tube going down that's not made of clay, right? This part is not entirely clear to me.
Thank you so much! Yes I size the opening so that it will fit either a glass or silicone down stem once it’s finished 😊 I did make one bong with a built in down stem but it makes it a bit trickier to clean, so a removable one seems best.
@@theclaycollective this makes a lot of sense, thank you! I'm thinking of doing a removable clay pipe then. It could be fitted with a wet lump of clay instead of silicone, so that it's even more absurdly sustainable.
@@crabofchaos7881 sounds like a great idea!! Once you get the shrinkage of your clay exact, you can make them pretty seamless! Little rubber o-rings from the hardware store are great too for making things air tight if the stem fits a little loose in the hole!
Hey I’ve read your tips on how to size your down stem! for a 14mm down stem with 11.37% shrinkage it looks like the original size needs to be about 3/5”, but I’m having a hard time finding a clay punch of that diameter. Do you have any other suggestions?
Hmm, maybe you can find some piping at a hardware store at that size? Or possibly use a compass to carve the hole diameter and then manually cut it out?
Do you mind sharing what size the hole cutter is? Do you know the shrinkage of your claybody? I was wondering because I also want to make one to use with the silicone down stem. Thanks!
For sure! I use a 7/8” hole punch for the hole and making the “tube”. My red clay shrinks at 15.5%. The hole punch has worked well for me with other clays with different shrinkages too, but I also buy little rubber O-rings from the hardware store and slip it around the silicone down stem. That way it has a snug but flexible fit even if there’s slight variation in the finished hole size 😊
I’m trying to make one for a customer from my shop, do you use ceramic clay and a food grade glaze? I’m so lost in making one but I’m trying to learn 😭, I hate saying no to customers
Yes! I use cone 6 stoneware clay and cone 5/6 food safe glaze. If you’re new to pottery, you will need access to a kiln (maybe if you have a local paint your own pottery store they could fire it for you), and you don’t have to make it on the pottery wheel. You can hand build it! ☺️
I get them on Amazon! You can buy glass ones, but I like the silicone ones since they’re a bit more forgiving if your shrinkage calculation ends up being a little off 😊
Can you post a link to your parts. Sorry if this has posted more than once. It wasn’t showing me that it had. I only sell mine at festivals in Georgia so I don’t think I’ll be taking your business.
I just tried to find the link to the down-stems I purchase on Amazon for you but they’re gone now 😭 If you google silicone down-stems though there are lots of head shops that supply them! Not as cheap, but nice quality!
Yay!!! Another one!!! I made 3 bongs yesterday after watching yalls videos!
Aww haha that’s amazing!! So glad to hear you found it inspiring 🥰
You are so talented! Love your work!🌻
Aww thank you so much! 🥰🥰
Thanks for this. I want to make pipes and bongs, and I don’t even smoke! I just think they’re pretty, and I know folks who would enjoy them.
That’s awesome! Best of luck to you 🥰

Thank you for getting back to me so quick!! Those are such good ideas I’ll try them out this weekend:)

nice! where did you get the hole cutter tool to make the stem?
Thank you! I bought it from tuckers pottery supplies! But any ceramic store should carry them 😊
Hey where do you get your down stems since you don’t show that part.
I get them on Amazon! You can buy glass ones, but I like the silicone ones since they’re a bit more forgiving if your shrinkage calculation ends up being a little off 😊
Is this brown bear from KY mud works?
It’s mid cal red from tuckers pottery supplies! 😊
Thanks for the response! I’ll look that up
How do you glaze inside the bong?
I use dipping glaze and I pour it inside 😊

Is is easy to clean inside after use?
About as easy as a glass bong! The only downside is you can’t see through it so it’s harder to tell when it’s clean 😅
Smell it lol
Hi! What glazes are you using for this piece?
Hey there! This glaze combo is Cordovan x2 under Birch x2 with a little bit of Light Flux on top 😁
How much clay are you using, pounds!!?
I kind of just eyeball it 😂 but I’d say around 2-3lbs!
