I Made R2D2! Intarsia Wood Project.

  • I LOVE Star Wars! Who doesn't? I especially like R2D2 so why not make him out of wood? I have always wanted to try intarsia and for my first project I am so happy with the way it turned out! It took me a long time to finish with all the tiny pieces and detail but it was worth it! This piece is made from standard poplar that you can buy at the big box stores. I cut each piece using various thicknesses and then shaped each one to give it the look I was going for. I thought I could do it without a scroll saw but as you will see, I needed to buy several tools and gadgets along the way. I have been wanting to do this type of woodworking for a long time. It's like 3D but not quite. Maybe 2.5D? Anyway, may the force be with you!

Very cool video. This is one of those "Make it happen", videos. If you want to do something bad enough you will do what it takes to make it so. My name is Steve Good. I write the Scrollsaw Workshop blog. I am going to link to this video in today's post so my readers can see your project. I know they will find it entertaining. If you are interested in seeing the post just do a google search for "Scrollsaw Workshop". Fun video.

Hi Steve, thanks so much for your nice comments and posting on your site! I have a lot to learn so I'll be following your blog from now on. The Scroll Saw is so much harder than it looks! Thanks again for featuring this video!!!

Nice job. One of the challenges of intarsia is to find woods that are different colors so you don’t have to paint them. No you won’t get bright blue but there are blue-ish woods, brighter and darker woods.

Hey thanks so much!! Really appreciate you watching and the kind words. I was just thinking yesterday what I want to do for May the 4th 2021. Should I stick with something intarsia wood or what about a Boba Fett helmet?

Steve Good sent me - thanks Steve🙏
Roland, I loved this project and seeing you do it was a special treat. It is great. Looks great on the wall too! Something you can be proud of for sure🐓 So let's all stick around and see what you come up with in the future👀
Mistakes? were made but, hey, we all improved our woodworking by our mistakes so no worries. Just be safe. Steel is much harder than flesh. Did I say Be Safe yet?
Did you know a scroll saw can do such clean cuts so that you only have to remove a few frizzies from the bottom cut edge?
    Stay safe. -Mike

Hi George thanks for the comments! I will include the links soon. In the meantime, the scroll saw is a Wen from Home Depot, the sanding plate is from Woodcraft (I love this btw), and the router speed control is from Harbor Freight. I think you can get them all on amazon as well. Thank you!
