Soundgarden was a hugely influential band in the rock landscape. Their grunge sound intermixed with Chris Cornell's terrific voice crafted brilliance. Here we take a look at their 6 studio albums and a 7th rerelease that compile their catalogue and rank them in honor of the loss of Chris Cornell. RIP.

Can this become a weekly series? I really enjoy these videos they give me a lot of insight on both bands I love and bands I've yet to listen to. I'd personally like to hear about Overkill. If this series became weekly, or had a set schedule at the very least, then I think that'd be awesome! Thank you for all the awesome videos CKN!

Been a Soundgarden fan since 1988 . I live in Seattle and was in my early 20's during the Seattle music explosion. I think your list is right on the money. I do lean more towards Badmotorfinger as their best it really is neck and neck with Suoerunknown. Thanks for the vid. Rip Chris Cornell

    1. Badmotorfinger - One of the heaviest albums I've ever heard. One of the most essential albums of my youth.
    2. Superunknown - The songs were not as heavy as BMF but very good, almost all of them.
    2. Louder Than Love - I cannot decide which one is number 2, so I choose both. I didn't like this album at all in early years but when I was 30 years old, I noticed I love it.
    4. Down on the Upside - It is underrated. "No Attention", "Blow Up The Outiside World", "Burden in My Hand", "Pretty Noose", damn good songs. It was a little bit different from previous releases and that's why very interesting. The first half of the album is better than the second one.

BMF still stands up and is my #1. I've listened to Superunknown 1M times, it's brilliant, but some songs I've worn out, the better ones, the majority, still are great. DOTU keeps sounding better over time. So too LTL, some of those songs rival songs off the next 2 albums and I often wonder how much better they'd sound with the same high level of production and sound.
Agree about KA, that's why I was so keen to hear the follow up, it would have rounded out their career and given more perspective to KA. Not to be. They've left us with heaps.
Hoping Kim Thayil records something in the future, everyone else put something significant out during their hiatus. And I hope it's Doom/Grunge/Sabbath/Metal/manic solo's. Man, I loved his guitar solo's.
One other thing - COLD BITCH!

I really like this guy he is knowledgeable but not so in love with himself like some others in so that he's open minded enough to accept other views opinions and interpretations and give credit to those that may be different from his but warrant merit and that gives him much mire credibility and likability and just makes him more enjoyable to listen to and I'll say it again he just knows his shit so he's not just rattling on about his opinions without anything to back it up but rather he just offers viewpoints with plenty of facts and reasons behind the views to make sense of where he's coming from to give even a very closed minded fan pause and reflect on why they disagreed from his position and he just seems like he would be enjoyable to sit down and discuss rock and roll with and he would try to hijack the whole conversation or try to prove how much he knows it would just be evident in talking with him and he seems like a nice genuine down to earth kind of rocker who has respect for the music the genre and the bands and musicians beyond just what they create

1.Badmotorfinger (classic from front to back, flows perfectly)
2.Superunknown (amazing but slightly less solid due to length. This makes some songs have less of an impact.)
    3.Ultramega OK (way underrated)
4.King Animal (underrated with a few meh songs)
5.Down on the Upside (half classic/half filler)
6.Louder than Love (one Dimesional song writing w/ classic songs here and there)

Like Suicide was written about a time Chris Cornell witnessed a bird fatally flying into a window pane as they sometimes do. Not about taking one's own life. However, I cannot disagree the emotions are still raw now as CKN correctly says.
I agree also Badmotorfinger & Superunknown joint #1 - utter genius!!!

Wow, when you look back at that time (late '80s - mid '90s) and the amount of downright masterpiece albums that came out one after another : Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, Nothing's Shocking, Ritual De Lo Habitual, Facelift, Dirt, Nevermind, Ten, In Utero, Vitalogy, Core, Purple, already mentioned Disintegration, Stone Roses debut, first 2 Oasis efforts, Odelay etc. Just mindblowing, isn't it? So many milestone albums that even fantastic albums like Southern Harmony by Black Crowes went under the radar.

King Animal has some serious "Solo Chris Cornell" things going on. Not just classic Soundgarden back together but I don't think that is a bad thing. There are some lighter and heavier tunes on the record. Not an instant classic but a nice return and solid album. I have it and I like it.

I was watching a clip where Chris was asked why he sang Spoonman different every time and his response was that he couldn't remember how it ended up on the record because they had played it so many different ways. Anyway... it's got to be Superunkown.

BADMOTORFINGER FTW! Their peak musically and artistically but also lyrically imho. This album made me more curious and more adventurous when constructing and arranging riffs for music and when writing lyrics. Louder than Love is a solid 2nd and Superunknown is probably 3rd. Down on the upside was a bit of a disappointing but overall I'd say their albums are all good and they all have that depth and those layers and facets that makes Soundgarden so special.

    4. Ultramega OK (6/10 Underrated)
    3. Down on the upside (7/10 Good, but the album feels long. Some of the tracks seem like filler)
    2. Superunknown (9/10 Very Good, tho some tracks are kind of forgetable)
    1. Badmotorfinger (10/10 Amazing, i especially like the fact they've added additional instruments on some tracks like horns, saxophones and trumpets. Feels very diverse, and i like that)

I feel like I’m the only one here who prefers Superunknown to Badmotorfinger. Badmotorfinger is heavier but to me Superunknown’s songs are simply better; Let Me Drown, Fell On Black Days, Mailman, Superunknown, Head Down, Limo Wreck, The Day I Tried To Live, Fresh Tendrils, 4th Of July, Like Suicide... The only two I don’t really listen to are Spoonman and Half. To me it’s a more consistent album. Whereas there are a few songs on Badmotorfinger that I really just don’t care for at all (Rusty Cage, Face Pollution, Mind Riot). And not to mention that towards the final few tracks the sound starts to get kinda repetitive. However I will say that the highs of Badmotorfinger are greatly higher than those of Superunknown. Outshined, Slaves & Bulldozers, Jesus Christ Pose and Room A Thousand Years Wide are some of my favourite Soundgarden songs.

    5. Louder than love (4/10 I don't really like the high-pitched screaming)
    4. Ultramega OK (6/10 Underrated)
    3. Down on the upside (7/10 Good, but the album feels long. Some of the tracks seem like filler)
    2. Superunknown (9/10 Very Good, tho some tracks are kind of forgetable)
    1. Badmotorfinger (10/10 Amazing, i especially like the fact they've added additional instruments on some tracks like horns, saxophones and trumpets. Feels very diverse, and i like that)
