  • When Soundgarden released Black Hole Sun, a surreal and sinister trip into the unknown… the song's sonic beauty resembled a psychedelic apocalypse. Authored by legendary Seattle musician Chris Cornell during a late-night drive, he quickly rushed home to capture this haunting melody. When he finished the song he completely underestimated it, calling it a decent third or fourth single. Little did he know this rock anthem was about to flip the musical zeitgeist upside-down and send Soundgarden past Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Alice in Chains in grunge’s next wave of the 90s... next we dig deep into the meaning of this dreamy soundscape… on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that have become monumental touchstones in our culture and society, and have really set the bar in rock history. Today we are headed back to the summer of 1994 to relive the story of the biggest song by Seattle’s own Soundgarden... Black Hole Sun.
In 1991, Soundgarden was comprised of Chris Cornell on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Kim Thayil on lead guitar, Ben Shepherd on bass, and Matt Cameron on drums. Released on October 8th that same year, their third studio album Badmotorfinger dropped just in time for the so-called grunge phenomenon. Just over a month prior, Pearl Jam’s Ten hit the shelves on August 27 and then Nirvana’s Nevermind was released on September 24th. By January 1992, Smells Like Teen Spirit would climb to #6 on the Hot 100 and Nevermind would claim #1 on the US Billboard 200 Album charts.
1992 actually saw a number of Nirvana and Pearl Jam singles take the US Rock and Alternative charts by storm. In addition to Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, In Bloom, Even Flow, and Jeremy all reached the Top 10. Later that year in September, Alice in Chains issued their multi-platinum smash Dirt, and singles Rooster and Down in a Hole would break the Top 10 in 1993. Other grunge-labeled outfits outside the Seattle scene skyrocketed as well.
But Soundgarden, who had been at it the longest, would actually be the last of the Seattle Four to achieve commercial dominance... Badmotorfinger turned in a comparatively disappointing #39 Album chart ranking, and its biggest single ‘Outshined’ stalled #45 spot on the Mainstream Rock Charts.
And yet the guys from Soundgarden knew they were on the precipice of a life-altering moment. With the worldwide explosion of grunge in 92 and 93, it was almost a sure-fire guarantee that listeners would line up to hear Soundgarden’s next record.
So, of course the band got back to work. And by the summer of 1993, Soundgarden entered the studio to record their fourth studio album, Superunknown. Said drummer Matt Cameron, “there was a little more anticipation from the record company to try and up the ante. Creatively, we were peaking. All pistons were firing - we were writing really cool music, and we were playing really good together. We wanted to be prepared, and rehearsed a lot.”

Not really a Norah Jones fan but when she sang BHS in dedication to Chris Cornell right after he passed, it was so sweetly heartbreaking. ❤️
I was a pregnant teen and scared out of my mind right when really major music was hitting the airwaves. My son was born at the end of 93 and I was getting into the groove of accepting my life was not going to go the way it was supposed to (ahem) in the summer of 94. BHS hung with me for years as I raised my son and raised myself; I always felt touched by it as a song sung by someone who’d been hurt as a child and was tending their own wounds, but that was probably my personal feelings laid heavily over it. Learning Cornell’s story strengthened that feeling for me, though.

To Daron Gabler. Of those four Grunge era bands, I always classed Nirvana and Pearl Jam 3 and 4 respectively. As someone who can sing and likes to, I like singers who can push the envelope. Kurt Cobain was never special, to me, in any way, but lyrically he was deep. Now Eddie has a great voice, but extremely limited range. In his wheelhouse, he is among the best, but that’s a small wheelhouse. It’s too bad, because Mike McCready is a phenomenal guitarist. That’s probably why Yellow Ledbetter is my favorite Pearl Jam song. They gave Mike the freedom to express himself on that one and the results were impressive. Still. Soundgarden will always be the best of those bands, in large part, because they had both the best vocalist and the best guitarist. And, of course Kim is only about 4 months older than me, so you have that dynamic, as well. Alice in Chains is close, but, although Layne had great range, his Dave Mustaine/Axl Roseesque vocal approach limited what they could do musically. There were no such limits with Chris Cornell’s approach.

My family owned a restaurant in a small town in NY during this time period. I started working part time there and we always had the local 'modern rock' station on in the kitchen. 94.9 K-Rock. I remember never feeling the need one time, the entire time I worked there to change the channel. That time period for music was just so saturated with amazing and individual sounds. No one sounded like each other.

I don't get why many chose this song to pay tribute to Chris after his passing. It's theme doesn't fit as a tribute to one whose passed. "Say Hello 2 Heaven", the Temple of the Dog song that Chris sang as a tribute to the late lead man of Mother Love Bone, would have been a much better and fitting tribute song for Chris.

But when Chris died, it took me almost a year to listen to any of his songs from soundgarden or audio slave or his solo stuff. Guess I was pretty upset about how it went down. Then I heard the crazy conspiracy theories about it involving him, Chester and Anthony Bourdain trying to expose Hollywood pedo rings. Wild stuff. Maybe Killary got em.

Finally, Adam, I always think of Robert Plant when I hear the line No one sings like you, anymore. The reason? Chris is the closest thing to Robert Plant that we have heard since the hey day of Led Zeppelin. Chris and Robert even had a similar approach to singing, although they achieved similar results in slightly different ways. While Robert sang and wailed, Chris sang and screamed. Both had very blues influenced soulful baritones that served as their regular singing voices. I have also heard others believe that John Lennon was who Chris meant in the lyrics. But, of the two bands, Soundgarden is much closer to Zeppelin than The Beatles in style and the song reflects that. This is especially true when you hear Kim Thayll go off on one of his outer space sounding psychadelic solos later in the song. George Harrison was a great guitarist, but that solo was unlike snything he did. Now, that would be right up Jimmy Page’s alley. But the man I always thought Kim channeled as well as anyone was Jimi Hendrix.
Anyway, I think the line refers to Robert Plant and that is my reasoning why.

I got into Soundgarden when I saw the video for "Outshined" on MTV. Badmotorfinger was a heavy, pummeling, and brilliant album, but I was not prepared for when I picked up Superunknown on the day it came out and put it in my CD player. While it dialed back on the heavy intensity, the songwriting was astounding. Just the way the title track flowed into "Head Down" then into "Black Hole Sun" left my jaw dropped open when I would listen to this album. And that's not taking anything away from the rest of this brilliant album.
Superunknown is an epic. The album may have been a little leaner and meaner if a few of the later tracks would have been cut, but I don't mind the length. The only track I would cut might be the strange "Half," but it is short enough to not bother me too much.
The album starts out with the churning heaviness of "Let Me Drown," then follow it up with the psychedelic metal anthem of "My Wave" "Fell on Black Days," which also became a hit, brings some dynamics before "Mailman" crushes you again with the trademark Soundgarden heaviness. Then there's the afore-mentioned majestic trilogy before first single "Spoonman" delivers another hit with its non-standard time signature and complex rhythms. That's contrasted with the slow, dirge "Limo Wreck" and the majestic dynamics of "The Day I Tried to Live," which was the album's final hit single. "Kickstand" is a brief punk rock blast of energy, which serves as a good palette cleanser for the final run of songs. "Fresh Tendrils" and "4th of July" both serve of flavors of sludgy, grungy Black Sabbath doom. "Half" is a weird, psychedelic track that makes me think of songs like "Within You, Without You" or "Tomorrow Never Knows" by the Beatles. Finally, the album closes with the droning "Like Suicide."
When I first heard "Black Hole Sun," I kept saying, "If the record label is smart, they will be putting this out as a single." I was not surprised when the video came out, and the song became a smash hit. In hindsight, Superunknown became the last big, important release of the original grunge era by transcending the basic sludgy, punk Sabbath sounds of the scene while still embracing it at the same time.

This was Soundgarden’s Magnum Opus, their masterpiece from being to end. So many band just hope to get a record deal. some just a gig. With work and luck a bit of a short lived career. Some have commercial success and some have all time hits or whole albums. This album was the culmination of the Seattle Sound. Almost all the bands continued to record and tour but with a different approach to music. That’s neither good or bad. Same can be said for the last song of this album and era- a beautiful song and powerful song end in a crescendo…Just Like Suicide.

  • @benjaminsmith6912
    @benjaminsmith6912 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Superunknown is a perfect album beginning to end! Lyrically top notch, my favorite song, Mailman = " Hello, don't you know me?
I'm the dirt beneath your feet
The most important fool you forgot to see
I've seen how you give it
Now I want you to receive
I'm sure for you would do the same for me"
How awesome are those lyrics? And you can't beat 4th of July and Like Suicide and of course the hits. Chris Cornell is a bad ass in every way. It is sad to think the majority of the "grunge era" singers will not attribute any more but what they gave us is the cream of the crop and eternal.

I was really too young to catch the mid 90’s and the birth of the grudge era. But, I remember watching MTV when it was MTV. I saw the video for Spoonman. It was the coolest song I think I had ever heard. It was the first grunge song I knew; way before I knew what grunge was.
Side note: I heard Chris talk about the song Outshined. And he gave his meaning but I think it was “made for media” if you will. Also I think him and Kurt knew each other.
But I think Outshined was about NEVERMIND.
I remember hearing that Soundgarden was the first Seattle group to be signed. Subsequent I feel like he felt outshined. Just my opinion though.
It would be 20-25 years before I realized how talented he was as an artist. Sadly that realization didn’t come for me until he past.
There was a meme on social media with a pic of Chris that had some lines to the effect of “People ask why I mourn the death of a musician. To which it replies. Because they are with us throughout out lives. The ups and downs. Kinda like a best friend.”
I realized I lost a best friend that day. And I mourned like I had lost a family member. Anyway long story longer.
Thank you for doing your show. It’s so entertaining. I do appreciate what you do, much. Sincerely JPIII
