      When I used to go thru immigration, they'd ask if I had a criminal record, to which I'd reply "no, but is it still ok for me to come in?". These days, they'd probably charge you under some anti-terrorist legislation if you said it.

    For Sydney meeting points, some of the best and atmospheric pubs are in the historic Rocks area near Circular Quay. Including the Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel, the Fortune of War, the Observer Hotel, The Orient, the Australian Hotel & the Glenmore Hotel. Alternatively there are modern bars and restaurants at King Street Wharf Darling Harbour (opposite the ANMM). Happy to assist with further research if required!

      Yeah the Lord Nelson would be very appropriate

      I came to recommend the Lord Nelson. Better then the (dis)Orient. These are near where Kattabul was sunk. (As Drach I'm sure knows, a recovered midget sub is in the War Memorial, Canberra).

    Hi Drach. As a meet-up in Sydney, I strongly second both the Lord Nelson and The Hero. The food at the Lord Nelson used to be pretty good, but I haven't been there for a couple of years, so maybe anothe Sydney local can provide an update.
    I hope to see you when you're here.

    Other good Meetup spots would be one of the oldest pubs in Sydney (there's a few that lay claim to it) The Lord Nelson, The Fortune of War or my favourite the Hero of Waterloo. Lovely old pubs.

    Make sure you get some greasy history by dropping by 'Harry's Cafe de Wheels', an American-style hotdog place which was originally created for Carrier-loads of homesick US sailors pulling in at the Woolloomooloo wharfs, right next to the main Garden Island naval base / HMAS Kuttabul. Doesn't have wheels anymore, though.

    Hope you have an enjoyable time here in Oz. In a subsequent video you might like to mention the HMQS Gayundah and in particular its captain, one Henry Wright who among other activities enjoyed a drink or two or three or more drawing said refreshments from Naval Stores without making payment. Words were exchanged between Captain Wright and the Colonial Government, when these discussions met with Captain Wright's displeasure he ordered that the ship be sailed up the Brisbane River and its 6 inch gun pointed at Government House in a menacing manner. Ultimately Captain Wright was dismissed from Colonial Service, he returned to Britain and to his nominal position in the Royal Navy. Although no charges were ever laid he never again commanded a ship.

    • @TheCaptainbeefylog
      @TheCaptainbeefylog ปีที่แล้ว

      Wright was the commanding officer who sailed her from England to Brisbane via the Suez, taking 4 months to do so.
      Turning her aft 6" gun to point at the Parliament buildings didn't require any movement of the ship as she had a clear view from her mooring at Kangaroo Point. The range was short enough that her muzzle flash would likely have cleared most obstructions, if any, between her and the target.

    • @barryhamm3414
      @barryhamm3414 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheCaptainbeefylog You are of course correct Captain Wright's plan was to bombard Government House from Kangaroo Point, thank you for the correction. The HMAS Gayundah went onto provide sterling service providing coastal defence during WW1. Later in its life it hauled sand and gravel on the Brisbane River before being used as a breakwater off Woody Point.

As a young Able Seaman in the RAN FAA in the 1980's I had the opportunity to work at the museum when it was little more than a couple of transportable huts & a strip of hard standing with about half-a-dozen aircraft along it (luckily for me they included a Sea Fury, Firefly, Gannet, C-47 (aka DC-3), Sea Venom & S-2G Tracker (the aircraft I was qualified on). I've seen photo's - it's changed a bit. I intend to get there one day, hopefully in the not too distant future.

    I might be able to get to see you in Sydney if I'm lucky. If you come back for a second tour, another site you might consider could be Fort Scratchley in Newcastle (North of Sydney). The fort was constructed in the late 20th Century, and fired upon a Japanese sub in 1942 when it shelled Newcastle. Interestingly, two of its 68 pounder guns (once made obsolete) were towed by bullock team to become a monument on Silo Hill in Stroud- so called because there is an old colonial brick silo built into the hill to store grain, I think. One is from 1855, the other 1856.

    Which HMAS Cerberus? There are two in Victoria - the wreck of HMVS later HMAS Cerberus and the Australian Navy shore training station HMAS Cerberus.

    Coincidentally, The 5th of June is Western Australia Day or simply WA Day[1] (formerly known as Foundation Day)[2][3] is a public holiday in Western Australia (WA), celebrated on the first Monday in June each year to commemorate the founding of the Swan River Colony in 1829. Because of the date of Western Australia Day, WA does not have the King's Official Birthday public holiday in June, as do the other Australian states; it is held in September or October instead.[4]

    When in Brisbane. Don't forget the wreck of the Queensland colonial navy gunboat Gayndah. Its located at Woody Point. Not far from an excellent steakhouse.
