Our military has been neglected by the federal government for several decades, going back as far as the 70s. Every time we are supposed to replace old equipment the government in power at the time doesn't want to be the ones to spend the money, so it just never gets done. We were supposed to replace our 50s era Sikorsky Sea King helicopters in the 80s, but some served into the 2000s because of this exact issue

I used to be in the CDN Infantry, and I can say another part of the reason we're so effective is BECAUSE our kit is crap. We've trained to use literally the worse, and oldest kit, so the fundamentals of soldiering is hugely emphasized to make up for the crap kit we're issued. This means that when we deploy, and are given moderately good gear, (because we only issue the good stuff for deployments) we're that much more effective.
Not to mention, Canada is still very rural. Unlike what Trudeau tries to tell everyone, shooting sports and being outside is still VERY engrained in our identity. We love being outside, we're used to hardship (shit weather, and varied terrain for example), and we're practiced with firearms even before we enlist. Hand a hardworking farmer, logger, oil worker, outdoorsman, etc a rifle, good pay, 3 hots and a cot... you've just created a hell of a soldier.

      @@gardensofthegods well, let’s review a couple.
Canada is using Sea King helicopters, impressively introduced in the 1950’s. I’m impressed, as the helicopter was introduced the year that I was born - 1961. Canadian helicopters have time travel!
Why couldn’t we get those too?
      Canadian armored vehicles break down.
Armed vehicles break down, babies wet, not a news flash there. Armor is infernally heavy, so wear is greater and maintenance is intensive and expensive - even if the things are just left parked.
I know that all too well, being licensed in M113’s, M577’s and Strykers (the last being still under warranty with GD - a Canadian company).
The US also still flies B-52’s, which were introduced in the 1950’s. Tough old birds too, I know of one that had severe weather shear its entire tail off and it managed to complete its flight and safely land.

Theres a massive misconception in America that Canadian troops aren't given plate carriers; and for the most part that's correct because most Canadian military personnel aren't in combat. Canadian troops DO get SBAS (Sniper body armour system) plate carriers when the task calls for it, but until then its just standard fragmentation protection vests as it's cheaper that way.

    1. 2 alcoholic beverages allowed per day on deployment
    2. HTLA on deployment (was that what we called it? Is that still a thing?)
    3. Personal kit was always outstanding. When we deployed (2006 & 2010) everybody in our platoon had C7A2 or C8A2 + Pac 4 + red dot sight, and our NVG at the time was Gen 4
    Negatives...
    - We don't get as much bang for our buck as we should. (6th largest spender in NATO)
    - Without any real direction/white paper, money ends up being spent on every capability we 'might' require instead of focusing on what we 'will' require
We also complicate the hell out of acquisitions of capital kit
    - Too much unwanted culture change coming from the outside. (We sometimes forget one of the roles we have is to fight in wars & win the tactical fight...instead we have these sensitivity courses that take over actual training)

Canada also has a habit of adapting smart tactics to help its army punch above its weight, it is basically a lower population, less rich version of the US.
That being said they spring into action when war is justified, declaring war on japan the day of pearl harbor where as the US took until the following day. They also joined both world wars years before the bigger brother to the south.
In ww1 they perfected the creeping barrage, where artillery would fire just infront of advancing men giving them cover and pinning the enemy down just before the Canadians jumped into the enemy trench, helping to capture vimmy ridge, a position the French and English both failed at.
In ww2 they used (and gave the name to) mouse-holing to great effect, a tactic where they would break holes through buildings so that troops didn't have to go to the streets and be exposed to enemy fire to enter the next house, this would also catch defenders off guard as there was a new entrance point with incoming grenades and soldiers.

Lack of leadership training as well and the problem of leadership goes further towards the civilian leadership. Sexual misconduct is also rampant in a lot of other militaries so we are the first to tackle it heavily. There is also a misunderstanding of the mindset and personality that a soldier has by the civilian population so the rules and regulations fall short to handle the issues while still keeping the force in tact.
There is also a lack of recruitment and a lack of retention, in both desire and ability.

As a former member, I'd say fixing the way the military can spend it's budget is actually a lot more useful than raising our spending to 2% of GDP
Each year, DND has to return approx $1B of its budget to the government as it was 'unspendable' as per Treasury Board rules. So there isn't a point in giving us more money if we can't even spend the money we currently do get

Canada is an interesting military situation. On one hand historically the people that choose to fight from there are are highly competent. On the other the country as a whole is fairly against military spending.

I think he was exaggerating a bit. I was CFR'd but paid at corporal 3 rate in 1989 (because Clp3 is more than 2Lt1) and I think I made about $50 per day before deductions from my mess etc.

Thanks for the kind recognition. Yes… as you suggest, recently because of Canadas roles in peacekeeping, however Canadian fighting men and women have over performed since WW1: starting w Ypres 1915, the Somme/Beaumont-Hamel 1916. Vinyl Ridge 1917 and Passchendaele 1917. And many other engagements since.
I tend to put it down to great training and BEING CANADIAN! 😊🍁But then I am biased.
