Wet and Windy Coastal Hike and Beach Camp. Norfolk Coast Path, Part 7 - Sea Palling to Caister.

  • In this video, I am finally back on the trail, walking the final leg of the Norfolk Coast Path. A very wet day and soaked to the skin, I make my way along the coastline, passing hundreds of Grey Seals gathered on the beach, through the sand dunes dotted with wartime bunkers and defences and finally past the popular seaside villages of Winterton, Scratby and Hemsby.
Cold, wet and weary and hungry, I eventually find a place at the back of the beach to set up my tent and take refuge from the weather - what a day! Some hot food inside me and I was ready to climb into my sleeping and get warm - the only option to dry out my wet clothing was to sleep in them - not a nice prospect, but at least they’ll be dry by morning.
Despite the weather, it was a fantastic walk - some of this stretch feels very wild - the dunes and sea to one side and stunted birch woodland to the other with the path finding through the rough ground between. The seals were also a huge highlight - gathered in large numbers - adults on the beach and their pups dotted along the sea defences and amongst the dunes.
In part two, I continue south, towards the busy seaside town of Great Yarmouth and beyond to the end of the trail at Hopton. And thankfully, much better weather!
I hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching!

Simon thank you so much for the hiking videos. First being a Texan in the US I am interested in the English countryside, which you feature nicely with good narration. However what is the most satisfying is the view of the trail from the chest mounted GoPro, and hear your footsteps. I have been in a wheelchair for almost four years since I lost my right foot. Your videos feel like I am exploring with you and it is wonderful. ATB !!!

It’s a fantastic walk which I’d recommend to anyone. I did it a few years ago thankfully in slightly better weather. The seals were a highlight of the walk. My friends and I did cheat as we stayed in accommodation every night so full respect for braving the weather and then camping. Thanks for a great video.

I think you had the better idea - a hot radiator to dry my clothes on, a hot shower, a warm bed and a pint or two in the local sounds much nicer than sleeping in my soggy clothes in my soggy tent and waking up to frost over everything 🥶😂

'Nutritional yeast whatever that is' ! I love your videos, but guess you don't hang out with any vegans. Nutritional yeast aka nooch is a wonderful addition to savoury meals, adding a cheesy/nutty flavour. It looks like fish food flakes, but honestly even for a meat eater will enhance your food. Sprinkled on beans on toast or avacado on toast it's lovely. Masses of B vitamins & zinc. Loved seeing the seals in this video and your no nonsense approach to it's freezing & wet but I'll camp anyway. Keep up the good work Simon; look forward to your future escapades.

Thanks for talking seal safety! I grew up on that coastline with family still there, and more and more people flock to see them every winter - not everyone cares enough or has the common sense to keep their distance, and the volunteer wardens can only do some much across that many miles. Still go camping at Waxham Sands most summers, and those dunes in Caister saw many nights of underage boozing when I was a teenager! Lovely to see it all on TH-cam watched by thousands. Great video.

  • @syncrosimon
    @syncrosimon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Winter walking is surprisingly satisfying, getting the distances done in the daylight is hard, and makes for long evenings. But the rewards of few other people and battling the elements makes it well worth it. Great video Simon.

Unsure why but got a bit of a bad vibe from Hemsby, it was super busy the day we walked through it and was expensive to park, we were just having a look around that day.
On our last day before returning back to Glasgow we walked from Winterton along to Caister, went into the big caravan site and had a few beers and a cone for Kylo the dog, he loves a cone.
Was a decent walk there and back along the sea edge, well most of it and it was such a nice day - 16th September.
It was a bit of a culture shock when I got home, nice and peaceful down there.
    Massive thanks again Simon

For those who feel that way it's no good for the image but for the practical types it's a real game changer. When the winds are favorable and its pissing down I'm happy as Larry under there and I prolong my gear. I have a video called: 5 Advantages of Using an Umbrella Backpacking - it's a good one. Well, them seals were awesome to see. I never knew Norfolk had so many. Fantastic hike - I look forward to part 2 now. Peace. Mark

No better feeling than spending a cold and wet day outdoors and then being able to create a warm and comfortable bed for the night while listening to it howling outside. Gives you good confidence in your kit too knowing it can cope with the conditions.

Long walk ! I've done Hemsby to Caister . Along the beach . Also Hemsby to Winterton along the beach. A bit bleak in that Wintery weather . I think I know the crackers you had there . We like the black pepper and sea salt ones . The rosemary ones are nice too . I didn't know that about the marram grass . 👍👍👍 A complex root system 🤔.

You never fail to impress, the overview of some of the locations on the walk is great to hear

Looks so nice, but you look cold Simon. Stay safe and dry and warm. Would hate for you to pick up a cold while trying to finish. Best of luck and Take Care. 👍👍👍👍👍

It was cold and damp that’s for sure, but day two improved hugely!

Simon, another great vlog! A theme you carry through most of your videos was taught to me over 40 years ago. If you want to hook someone on the great outdoors entice them with smell and sounds of good food. Yup you did it even from a pouch! Oh and the pressure cooker lamb stew in a previous was out of this world.

That made me cold just watching it! Does the soul good to be out in the weather. Nice vid Simon - cheers!

The one seal kept looking at you with puppy eyes! Thanks for the virtual hike, Simon. When I saw the notification that your video was up I thought I'd snuggle down on our 1 degree F night and see where you would take us. I can't say the video warmed me up - but I did enjoy it! 🙂Thank you!

Brilliant to see the Seals Simon and I had no idea so many frequented Norfolk for their winter holidays 😉. The walk looks brilliant, I will have to do some of it this year in the summer. Thanks for taking us along and here's to part eight.

Wow that was a wet one mate. Crazy, you brought back a great memory for me Simon too. The slide you showed us at Hemsby, I took Jake on that way back when he was younger. I remember walking down the main street back to the car. We stayed in Caister-On-sea in a caravan with my mum and dad. I paused the video because I thought I'd recognised it and I was right. Mad that mate ain't it.
Away, back to the vid. A great knowledge on local history you have, I didn't know that the old villagers planted such plants to stop the ocean taking the land back, very interesting.
The seals were bloody awesome to see, very cool mate. I'll look forward to the second part next week mate.

Quite a jaunt on this leg. If we can't have Maggie😍, at least we have the seals. 😊 This whole Norfolk series has been a highlight of your channel over time! Did you NOT BRING a spare pair of dry woolen socks?

Thanks James! Sadly, I didn’t take any spare clothing - I slept in all my wet gear and it was dry by morning 👍
