Smart Homes weren't a new idea even when this came out, there has been concepts around since 1939, there was another big push for them in the 1950's the tech evolves but most people see through the hype unless it's something that genuinely makes their life easier some companies have been trying to sell Smart Fridges since the 1980's but they never gain traction, businesses have adopted security and other features where it makes sense but can you imagine an office using voice activation 😄
They had technical advisors on the show who knew about upcoming tech and used it to create these stories.
I think paperclip problems or misalignment are more likely than a house understanding things it wasn't programmed to, or law enforcement or information. I think if we were close to some of the tangible risks and our media was about those risks and not like 4 or 5 steps later than we'd be more careful.

Great review. It's so good to watch you enjoying these. When I first started watching The X-Files I told myself that I would watch one or two episodes a day. Instead, I got totally hooked and binged on the series as fast as I could. I would love to experience watching it all for the first time - again! 👍👽
Ghost In The Machine I thought was another great S1 episode. This show was way ahead of its time. with everyone going nuts now over mass surveillence and AI, but here we see this shown 30 years earlier, with the machines becoming intelligent on their own. A great parallel with Oppenheimer and the bomb as well with Wilczek regretting sharing his information with the government. I absolutely loved the sound of the old internet connection on Scully's computer, great memories before broadband. Strangely this scores a very low 6.7 on IMDB I thought it was much better. Like the Buffyverse shows have tried to get a lot of people to watch The X-Files but they dismiss it until they watch it, then they love it. This guy is running a poll on what to watch next, got him to watch Buffyverse shows and he loved it, now trying to get him to watch the X-Files www.youtube.com/@eliemoses/community
Have you seen the old horror SCI FI movie Ghost in the Machine ? I am pretty sure it covers the same ground. Maximum Overdrive has killer machines same theme. Good episode.
