    Useful vid for beginners :-) As I get more experienced, I find that I instinctively release a little tension every time I detect an overset to drop it back. I used to get really frustrated by overseas, but with time, you just take them in you stride :-)

    Wow, thank you! Was messing with this lock for hours, got it open twice on luck, now I actually know what to listen to and feel for, and can get it open in under 30 sec. So thank you!

    I like the zipping thing. I also can get oversets to fall by "tickling" the pins with sort of a rounded half diamond. I've also practiced turning standard pick over and deliberately over-setting All the pins and then tickling them with light, sensitive, tension.
    Sometimes, the lock will open magically, as the pins all properly set. Kind of a reverse rake.

    Nice video, but since there is less and less locks with only standard pins, it will be useful to explain how to deal with overset security pins.

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can apply all these concepts to security pins. The only real difference is with serrated key pins however those are not utilized very often. They are more about prevention than fixing but these techniques can help with them but they are certainly harder to get to drop back down

    Great video thank you, why do you always pick this Euro lock upside down when fitted in a door they would be the other way round and you can't feel the pins dropping

    Need to talk about the tension you apply as compared to where your at in setting the pin process.How much tension in the beginning?when do i apply tension?do i increase tension?

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are working with standard pins it is more of a static / unchanged amount. With security pins you need to vary it.

    I have the newer version of the Sparrows cutaway and I am having a terrible time getting an open it can take me up to an hour, so I figured out why and it's because of pin 5 when I have to set it, pin 1 oversets, so I decided to pull pin 5 and work with a 4 pin lock, for now, I'm hoping to learn feedback and for knowing which pin I'm on and how far to push it up, I gotta tell you it's frustrating as hell sometimes, I have 1 commercial lock and I have gotten an open on it but most of the time I fail.

  • @thekracken4572

    I have been taping lightly on the face of the core if I over set pins. It's been working rather well for me but I currently only have a couple of locks to practice on. So I don't know how reliable it really is for other locks.

    How do you know whether to put tensioner on top or bottom?

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You just need to try it out and see which binds the pins better and leaves you adequate access to the keyway

      I've actually seen your video on that. Pretty impressive. I'll have to try working on the technique. Usually I'll force an overset and work my way out of it to get a lock open. So many tricks of the trade. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  • @JPoleet

    I'm still struggling with this, and I am working on a crappy Masterlock 141D which people routinely rape with ease. Single pin picking is going real slow for me. I feel like maybe I am oversetting the pin, but it gives a good click, but then everything just feels spongy, and then I am lost and can't find another binding pin. AGHHHHHHHHHH!

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The crappy Master Locks don't always give the best feedback. I would encourage you to practice on a Schlage or Kwikset

    Can you feel an overset pin when the lock is in the upside down position, like the locks here in Europe?

  • @mikerotch3158
    @mikerotch3158 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok but what if the lock is the other way around? So the pins are at the bottom, not the top.

    You can't actually "hear" a driver pin fall, especially if its an older and used lock. You guys shouldn't make this seem easier than it really is. Lock picking is an art.
