  • A lap pool, as the name suggests, is designed for swimming laps. It has to be long. There's no standard dimension or length, specially if you're trying to fit it in your backyard, but its suggested that it should be around 12.5 meters with a depth of over 1 meter.
You can have a shorter pool and swim laps in it but after a few months it will feel shorter as you improve swimming. This is the time, where you feel you're doing more push offs and turns vs. actually swimming. As seen in the video, 2 strokes each lap is not ideal to practice swimming.
One solution is to updgrade your pool by investing in a swim machine. Its an equipment that you can mount / install in your existing pool, which creates a current where you can swim against. This is sometimes called a swim flume or an aquatic treadmill. And it's best to get a propeller induced current vs a jet system.
You can also set up an Above Ground Pool with a Swim Machine. The smallest suggested dimension to install the swim machine (Bestway Swimfinity) used in this video is 16' x 8' x 48"/4.88m x 2.44m x 1.22m Rectangular Pool Set. See this link for set up reference • Bestway Swimfinity 585... .
