    I've been running packet forwarders for 6 or 7 years, all pointed into a local Chirpstack instance. I use the network for custom built sensors around my house and farm. Unless I'm mistaken, if you want to set the date/time on a device from the LoRaWAN network, you'll need a GPS on the gateway. Maybe there's now support to sync the gateway with an NTP server, but I thought the 1 PPS from the GPS was required. I also haven't looked at Basic Station support yet. I'll be interested to see what this has to offer, and if it's useful as far as moving data to the Chirpstack instance.

    • @AndreasSpiess

      For your propretary network, I think there is no need to move to Basic Station. And thank you for the hint about the GPS time. However, I never cared about the time in my gateway and I always got the right time on my messages. I do not know if it comes from TTN or from the net.

    • @JCWren

      @@AndreasSpiess I believe I was mistaken that GPS is required for the time. What it is required for (or was) is supporting LoRaWAN Class B devices.

  • @stefans9990

    Thanks for another informative video Andreas. Looking forward to the outdoor one next week. I am a little perplexed about why I would really use Lorawan indoors? I have always found it easier and cheaper to just build sensors on an ESP32 or even an old ESP8266 and use deep sleep to compensate for the power. In most of my cases, a sensor that reports in every 2 minutes (or longer) is just fine. Plus, extending wifi has become so ubiquitous that I would imagine almost everyone here has their home area fully covered. But of course, always still an interesting topic and always appreciated that you make videos about these things. Perhaps you and other subscribers can please educate me if there is something that I am missing about Indoor Lorawan?
    PS: So sorry about the cat. I distinctly remember being inspired by her appearance on the catfood scale video - I think an HX711 module? RIP Diska!

    • @AndreasSpiess

      I use an indoor gateway for tests. But others use it when sensors are all over the place and in difficult to reach (RF) locations. For example I heared that the Deutsche Bahn uses it in their multi-story building. Or the retailer Coop in Switzerland to survey all their refrigerators in one building (including incoming goods with LoRa temperature sensors).
      WiFi sensors usually need mains connection (I have quite a few of them). So Zigbee is a good thing if 2.4GHz works in your situation.

    2:30 Geolocation might not be widely used for your previously demoed usage(sending text messages) but I imagine this is a very desired feature for what LoRa would be most useful for: tracking assets(ex: public transport - offering time predictions without internet) and calling for rescue services with geolocation(ex: mountain bike helmet/regular handler computer/watch with crash detection that calls rescue services).

    • @AndreasSpiess

      Most of LoRa trackers have built-in GPS because the location of a pure LoRa system is not very precise. I heard that they do some elephant tracking in Africa with such a method. So, if battery life is important, I agree with your comment.

    • @aliancemd

      @@AndreasSpiess If it's not accurate, I could see a use-case where you continuously track for example the general direction of bears and switch to GPS once they get into danger areas, to alert locals or for careful monitoring.

    Tips: When testing transmission ability, do not rely upon "cat /proc/net/wireless", instead use iperf3 (need 2 machines running iperf). Don't use cheap antennas, and don't use cheap antenna cables. I found a 10:1 performance difference between an Rpi Zero 2W inside a TICONN case vs. an external antenna via USB. I thought values from "cat /proc/net/wireless" were determinative, but found those were false flags: iperf3 tests provided an accurate performance rating.

      You have to distinguish between Helium mining and using Helium as a transport for your data. The M2 should work for data transport.

    Andreas, I thought the RP SMA (F) was the later way to output on wireless units / devices, and have RP SMA (M) on the antenna side.
    Logic behind it being you're less likely to drop a physical wireless device such as a gateway etc, so theoretically its better to have the thin pin on the equipment side (such as the gateway) than it is to have it on the antennas which we're more likely to swap out and change during fault finding, experimentation or testing so more likely to drop or have rattling about in a bag or carry case.
    Are you saying its better to have the pin on the antenna side using the original SMA (M)?
    Are you saying suggesting that so we're less likely to confuse our LoRa antennas with WiFi antennas?
    I know realistically it shouldn't matter either way, I'm just curious though.
    Thanks..

    • @dbrgn

      As far as I know, RP-SMA was developed to prevent people from connecting SMA antennas to their devices to increase signal strength. It is similar to "security screws" like Apple's Pentalobe, or those strange triangular screws you find on power strips.

    • @AndreasSpiess

      @dbrgn is right. It was invented in the 1990 when the first Wi-Fi access points ccame to the market to prevent "stronger" antennas.
