The thing with perspective not being right in this movie's backgrounds, that's on purpose. The inspiration lies in those medieval tapestries, where everything is woven beneath eachother. I think it's Byzantin, if that's the english word for it? Sleeping Beauty's castle is in Disneyland Paris, and the square trees are there too. Most beautifull castle of any park
I was thinking it also resembled Renaissance paintings. Honestly just noticing how much the perspectives and trees resembled the Mona Lisa. I assumed it was on purpose, but so cool re the tapestry inspiration.
I loved your reaction to this movie :) And yes, "Aurore" in French means "Dawn" and Aurora is the English variant of aurore in French. Aurore is a French name as well, in fact, that's how she's called in the French version of the movie: princesse Aurore.
I was a fine arts major, and my father's a painter. Only a few years ago did he point out to me that the painted backgrounds in Sleeping Beauty were his favorite among the golden age Disney animated movies. It looks incredible in the highest resolution. ( :
Sleeping Beauty was my absolute favorite Disney princess growing up and I never really knew why. Now I know it was probably because of how dynamic and sharp the art style was.
Fun fact: A lot of the music was taken from Tchaikovsky’s sleeping beauty ballet and maleficent’s theme is actually taken from a pas de deux scene with two cats
I have so much to say about this film. I love it so much. When it comes to animation and visuals alone, this is my favorite animated film. Eyvind Earle is my favorite painter. I just started his book "Horizon Bound by a Bicycle." In 2016, I met Floyd Norman (who helped animated Philip, Samson, and The Fairies). He was one of the first African American animators at Disney. H e signed my Sleeping Beauty movie poster. 14:11. The dress color fight scenes were based on actual arguments that the artists had. 19:51. Originally, Marc Davis wanted Maleficent's colors to be black/red with yellow flames. But Eyvind Earle thought that black/purple/red with green/yellow flames would bee more interesting and different. 20:49. The cloud ending is based on deleted concepts from Snow White and Cinderella. Walt Disney always wanted a love song with a fairy tale couple dancing on a cloud and finally got to do it in Sleeping Beauty.
"he is so tall, omg" me, who has a crush on him since i was 4 because he is pretty, tall, can dance, sing and wanted to marry a peasant: hell yeah he is this movie is just beautiful. first disney movie i' ever saw when i was 4, and still to this day my favourite of them all. oh, andf malificent is queen of evil forever XD
Evyine Earle was the overall artist influence for SLEEPING BEAUTY (which was more akin to crafting the European Tapestry look) and every artist had to undergo a ton of tutorials on how to emulate Earle's style. Only three times did Disney really use one artist's perspective for a film's overall look: the first was Tyrus Wong who influenced the look of BAMBI, Mary Blair's work was the influence for both CINDERELLA and ALICE IN WONDERLAND and Earle for SLEEPING BEAUTY. This was also the last Disney film to use the classical "storybook look", as their next film, 101 DALAMATIANS, was more influenced by "modern art" (which Disney ultimately wasn't a fan of).
Philip caught Aurora dancing around with his clothes, which were just stolen from him. For all he knows, she was directly involved in the theft and pulling a prank on him. I can understand why he would want to do some playful payback by swapping places with her dance partner (who is *still* wearing the stolen clothes). He meant no harm by it, and he's clearly not a bad person. Here's a fun take on "Once Upon A Dream" and the Aurora/Philip relationship: Aurora says that she has see and spent time with her dream prince "so many times." When she and Philip cross paths in the forest, the latter tells the former that they have met before; they've met "once upon a dream." One could argue that he was just going along with Aurora's game, but if that's the case, why did he repeat the phrase in front of King Hubert? Why would he tell his father that he met his true love "once upon a dream" when Hubert wasn't there and wouldn't know what Philip is talking about? SLEEPING BEAUTY takes place in a magical world where fairies and curses exist. I don't think interacting with people via dreams is outside the realm of possibility. What if Aurora and Philip *have* meet each other through their dreams long before Aurora's sixteenth birthday? That would explain why they warmed up to each other so quickly.
The visual model for Aurora was Helene Stanley (who had done the same thing for Cinderella). Her voice was provided by Mary Costa, then at the beginning of a successful operatic career.
I would personally love to see you watch The Black Cauldron. It's considered to be Disney animation's darkest film, and the art style is very similar. It was incredibly expensive and almost drove the studio into bankruptcy, so the animation and art is incredibly advanced despite that the film was largely unsuccessful due to the darker tone.
I really enjoyed this! Sleeping Beauty is one of the few movies I Immediately rewatched purely for the art style and beauty of it. I liked the points you made; there have been a few artists and animators reacting to this kind of thing and I don’t think they explained their perspectives and points as well as you did. They’ll say, “oh that’s hard,” but not why, and that can be frustrating as someone who wants to learn and understand what they’re seeing. But you actually say the WHY in addition to the what. Sometimes we don’t even get a what from other reviewers! Kudos!
14:20 Yup And I know when the book was closing it turned to pink (I didn't notice that detail for years), but to me it always ended with her dress being blue and when I finally noticed it turned back to pink as the book cover closed I just figured it meant that they're going to continue arguing about that. But just for the record, her dress is blue.
Rescuers Down Under is an underrated classic. It marks the first fully digital film by Disney and what would eventually become Pixar, and the backgrounds are absolutely incredible and revolutionary, as they are the first fully rendered CG backgrounds used in an animated feature.
All the soundtrack comes straigh from the Tchaikovsky Ballet with the same name. The most beautiful Disney Princess movie ever! Interesting that besides the name of the movie, the Sleeping Beauty herself only appears for 18 minutes in the entire picture.
Please see CInderella! The art styles is amazing. This movie was based on medieval tapestries. Cinderella was based on Mary Blair's art style. And Fantasia is ART.
5:48 omg im procrastinating on a job because ive been stressing about the perspective lol. Thank you! Great advice- even us pro's are wracke with doubt. Love Mary Blairs unique illustration style that is so present in every cell of this movie
The very first time I watched this as a kid I was horrified at the moment when those minions were dancing around that fire. I turned to my mom, already crying, and asked her if they were burning the prince so he could never kiss Rose. I have no doubt she was horrified by that question, especially hearing it from a little girl that shouldn’t know about that stuff, but told me to wait a bit and i would get my answer. Which told me the answer was no, but I was still scared until I saw him alive. Watching Hunchback of Notredom will do that to ya. That freaked me the heck out and never watched it a second time.
Fantasia was released in 1940, almost 20 years before this movie. I know my Golden Era (Snow White - Bambi) and Silver Era (Cinderella - Jungle Book) dates. I'm more fuzzy on the Package Era (Saludos Amigos - Ichabod and Mr Toad) and Bronze Era (Aristocats - Oliver and Company), but I know pretty much all the other movies released in the twentieth century.
Just watched your Bambi video and went straight to this one, another one of my classic Disney favorites, thank you so much for this commentary! You said things about it not even I noticed and I've watched this movie so many times
A big thing about the animation in Sleeping Beauty was that it was so expensive to put in the detail that they did that it almost bankrupted the company. It's why films that came out after this (like 101 Dalmatians, Sword in the Stone, Jungle Book, Robin Hood, AristoCats, and so on) would have simpler designs in the art and animation.
You should watch "The Secret of Kells." It's the most beautiful movie I've ever seen in terms of art styles. The majority of the movie is in illuminated manuscript style, but there are a few scenes that use very different styles and it all works together so well! A perfect 10/10 from me!
Thank you for this channel!! I’m keen for seeing someone as passionate as I am check out these films! Have a sub! Actually the I know you song is based on the music from the Sleeping Beauty Ballet. They took the music and put some words to some of it
I love watching your reactions to the older animated movies, anything disney and loved that you watched fantasia :) It is pretty awesome watching your reaction as an art student because I love hearing your thoughts and perspectives on the artwork in the movies, it is a major reason why I just love love older animated movies. If you read this, would you please please pretty please react to the movie "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" ??? It is on disney plus, It is basically the famous "Sleepy Hollow" Legend, and it truly is the only story of Sleepy Hollow that I love so much. The movie is actually a two part skit movie, one with a toad story and one with the ichabod crane sleepy hollow story. The toad story is really not that great and if you skip to "35:43" thats when the sleepy hollow story starts and its only about half an hour. I would truly love to see a reaction to this please :( I want to hear your artistic thoughts on it, and I really hope that one day maybe when you are bored or want to see a rendition of sleepy hollow, please give this a chance. Love to see the reaction!

Famous words. This movie toke 6 years and cost 6 million dollars to make. It is great as art, okay as a movie but overall still a great Disney Classic.
A lot of people hate sleeping beauty but this one is one of closest childhood memories to me from Disney movies along with Mulan and Ariel. I think even as a kid I loved this movie from the artistic perspective. The music and animation in this one along with Mulan is deffo my favourite. It’s so stunning! I love your concept and how you react to movies through the lens of an illustration (/animation) student! Also Aurora’s real life model was Audrey Hepburn
The scream that Malificent makes when Philip hits her with the sword, it's the same scream as The Wicked Queen/Witch from Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs when she falls to her death. It was also used in the Donald Duck cartoon Trick or Treat as Witch Hazel's scream when she gets scared by Huey, Dewy and Louie's Jack-o-lantern before she sees them.
I don’t know if it’s too early to be making requests but Triplets of Belleville is a French animated movie and there’s so much to talk about for its art… almost no dialogue, I think maybe just one line. It’s great! Edit: Haha commented this before the video was over… so here’s some more requests for reactions: The Great Mouse Detective (I love the colors of this movie and there’s an awesome clock animated scene/villain metamorphosis) Fantasia (many different animated styles displayed) Dumbo (hella traumatic but some very interesting artistic decisions) and if you can find it, the anime version of Swan Lake (I had in on VHS when I was young, it’s beautiful)
So here's some trivia. There was a shortage of the materials to make things like paint more red as this was being developed during wartime. You can tell that sometimes the fairy in red is not always in red because they focused that color on the prince's cape and that the fire was green and yellow because they didn't have enough reds to make all the fire sequences that color.
When Flora and her fairy sisters put the whole Kingdom asleep, she then basically put their magic on par with Malificent's magic this making what the 3 said at the film's begining.
4:56- the fairies wanted to make Aurora a flower but since maleficent sends a frost- it’ll kill the flower(I.e Aurora) cause most flowers can’t survive in the cold
When I was young I really wanted to be a Disney animator. I read several books on Disney animation, watched just about every Disney animation documentary. I've seen every Disney animated film (many in theaters/drive in's). I used to draw, and create (ink and paint)animation cel's and do make background cel's. I did almost exclusively Disney. My favorite animated films by Disney (out of their classic films, those done by Disney's original team, the first generation, if you will) I'd rank by the beauty of the art work in the film. These are the top picks. 1. Sleeping Beauty 2. Fantasia 3. Bambi 4. Snow White 5. Lady and the Tramp 6. Pinocchio 7. Alice in Wonderland 8. Peter Pan 9. Cinderella 10. The Jungle book You should check out Snow White and Lady and the Tramp. They have some beautiful animation in them as well. And Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan have some great art, Designed by the great art designer Mary Blair.
Maleficent is crazy powerful and has an amazing fearful stage presence that other villians just don't have. I mean who else can turn into a dragon and not make it look ridiculous?
Maleficent and her dragon form are my favorite part of the movie. And she one if my favorite villains. I was excited when they did the live action with angelina jolie.
Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty is the music. When I was a child I would play all of the LPs and listen to it for hours. As far as the art work any Disney's were ahead of its time including Mary Poppins. You need to watch the Documentary on Walt Disney and the early studio. Amazing!
Actually about the frost part, Flora consindered to turn Aurora into a flower in order to protect her from Malificent but Merryweather points out that she would send a winter frost which would have killed flower Aurora cuz you know, freezing temperature kills flowers and such. I thought it was so obvious that you would have caught on that but you were overthinking it.
Also with regards to the topic of perspective and backgrounds, your professor is absolutely right. A great example of that is Scott Wills. But you probably know who he is already. If you've watched Samurai Jack it's literally littered with backgrounds that are simplified and disregard perspective. All of them done by Scott Wills.
Granted, this is a late response, but if you get the time there is a a clip from the old Disneyland/Wonderful World of Color series called "4 Artist Paint 1 Tree" that shows off the making of these backgrounds and other tips for animation that is worth looking into.
Breaking rules of perspective is only valid if you understand how to draw perspective properly, because only if you understand how to make perspective work can you understand how to break it while still making it work. Telling people that "perspective doesn't matter as long as it looks cool" is awful advice for someone learning how to draw.
“It looks horrible” “That’s because it’s on you, dear” DAMN 😳
Roast!😂
The thing with perspective not being right in this movie's backgrounds, that's on purpose.

Yes indeed. What makes it cool is they really were inspired by the tapestries

Mad respect, I've done background paintings and this will always be my favorite movie and a big part of it, are the backgrounds.
Sleeping Beauty was my absolute favorite Disney princess growing up and I never really knew why. Now I know it was probably because of how dynamic and sharp the art style was.
Sleeping Beauty was and remains one of my favorite Disney movie soundtracks growing up. Tchaikovsky's music is just so magical ...
The music is accually from the ballet 'Sleeping Beauty'. It is composed by Pjotr Illich Tchaikovsky.
Fun fact: A lot of the music was taken from Tchaikovsky’s sleeping beauty ballet and maleficent’s theme is actually taken from a pas de deux scene with two cats
The art style for this movie always reminded me of stained glass, all the sharp angles.
I have so much to say about this film. I love it so much.

I love this movie so much much! Beautiful masterpiece
13:30 Flora hadn't baked the cake yet.
FANTASIA. If you want to see great animated art: Fan-FREAKING-tasia.
DO. IT!!
As an illustration major, one major selling point would be the diverse number of styles in that movie.

20:10 Aww. Maleficent DOES have a heart
Disney wanted the look of medieval tapestries
Nice job watching my favorite Disney movie. Keep up the good work
oh please watch 1950 Cinderella the lady that voices Maleficent also voices the Step-Mother
Yes but I love her more in this movie. Maleficent will always be a great Antagonist.
I think this movie takes place in medieval times(i read it takes place in France)

The entire trilogy by that company is amazing in terms of artwork("Secret of Kells", "Song of the Sea"and "Wolfwalkers".)
The song you did recognize is from the Tchaicovsky ballet "The Sleeping Beauty", that was used in this movie
Thank you for this channel!!

Actually the I know you song is based on the music from the Sleeping Beauty Ballet. They took the music and put some words to some of it
The design concept was to emulate a stain glass window
The artistic design is one of the many reasons this is one of my top fav Disney films

Actually the title music and some other pieces are by Tchaikovsky (namely from his ballet "Sleeping Beauty") and were just adapted for the movie.

Satoshi Kon's "Paprika" (2006).
This movie made me want to become an illustrator.
You should react to the movie (The Sword in the Stone)....
2:29 why did Lord Duke say “Their Riyal Highnesses,”? He should have said “His Royal Majesty and His Royal Highness, King Hubert and Prince Phillip!”
That minstrel is a weak drinker-One sip and he's HAMMERED!
My favorite Disney movie
Eyvind Earle was an amazing artist and an interesting person
6:40 i actually never noticed that thank you
6:55 oh you say that now but funnys come after
React to Prince of Egypt, very underrated film!
If you like this background art you should check out SAMURAI JACK
Gourgeous princess, Wonderful movie.
A very good animated film you should see is The triplets Of Bellville
Are you only going to do handrawn animation, or will you do computer animation as well ?
Wow. I just clicked on it as it popped up and it's your first video? That never happens.
Granted, this is a late response, but if you get the time there is a a clip from the old Disneyland/Wonderful World of Color series called "4 Artist Paint 1 Tree" that shows off the making of these backgrounds and other tips for animation that is worth looking into.
15:47 my gosh 😅
ur cat has the cutest nose
Rescuers
Breaking rules of perspective is only valid if you understand how to draw perspective properly, because only if you understand how to make perspective work can you understand how to break it while still making it work.
Telling people that "perspective doesn't matter as long as it looks cool" is awful advice for someone learning how to draw.
"Is this a musical"
Hun it's Disney.
Let me suggest an artsy animated movie: "The Point". The animation is weird, and I would love to see what you'll have to say about it
15:50 ohhhhh no 🥶 15:48 my bad 😅
