Phil Penman: Mastering Monochrome Street Photography in NYC

  • Phil Penman is a highly acclaimed British-born, New York-based photographer renowned for his extensive documentation of New York City’s streets over the past 25 years. His career as a news and magazine photographer has seen his work featured in prestigious publications such as The Guardian, The Independent, and The New York Review of Books. Penman has captured images of significant public figures and historical events, most notably his coverage of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. His powerful reportage has been showcased on NBC’s Today show, the BBC, the History Channel, and Al Jazeera, and his photographs are preserved in the 9/11 Memorial and Museum’s archives.
    Penman also documented the pandemic lockdown in New York City, with this work being acquired by the U.S. Library of Congress, joining the ranks of legendary documentarians like Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange. His street photography has been exhibited in Leica galleries in cities including New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, and London, as well as in international exhibitions in Venice, Berlin, and Sydney.
    In addition to his exhibitions, Penman teaches photography workshops worldwide for Leica Akademie and was recently named one of the “52 Most Influential Street Photographers,” alongside icons such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastião Salgado, Diane Arbus, and Garry Winogrand. His books, "Street" (2019) and "New York Street Diaries" (2023), both became best-sellers and were featured at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

    Nice shots generally but some of them made in Europe (including Paris, France) ! Please either erase them or modify the title of the video

    Beautiful pictures !!
    But please ... the music is complete non sense.
    Absolutely no connexion between the music and the photos.
    And to be honest, the music on the video is just a nightmare ...

    I love the montage but this music is the WORST!!! I had to turn the volume down in order to enjoy the slide show. Next time use some LowFi or Downtempo if you're gong to set these videos to music.

      Absolutely right ... beautiful pictures ... but such cheap and painful music. It doesn't match at all with the atmosphere of the pictures. Hard to understand. I also had to mute 😅😅

      Completely agree, this music is a lack of taste and contempt for the artist. I would have rather listen Satie or Debussy.
