Fabulous! Thank you for sharing your DNA results, Julie. I wonder if there were many surprises? Many thanks also for this My Heritage offer - I'm certainly going to avail myself of it. We have family trees on paper back to The Conqueror so I'm looking forward to learning where the DNA surprises slipped in ;-)

Julie, It’s so impressive how your husband’s ancestor recorded the family tree so beautifully and with so much detail. What a treasure! They are most privileged that they have been able to preserve their history and share it with others. They are also fortunate to have you in their family who is so enthusiastic about learning more all the time and preserving it for future generations. BTW I would like to point out that while the US does not have such a long history as a nation, the Americas and its people have a very, very long history. Unfortunately, this history has not been widely taught, but it extends for centuries beyond the European history. Many more Americans than we’ll ever know have native ancestry. Thank you ❤

Most Americans have family stories of Native ancestry like Elizabeth Warren but aren't related by blood ties or it's so distant that there isn't any Native blood left. It usually disappears after 5-6 generations. Native tribes don't generally recognize distant heritage and descendancy. The U.S. government imposed blood quantum of 1/4 on most tribes. Some have changed that rule but in earlier times, people hid their ties to tribes because of the residential schools imposed on children. Both white and black Americans hid their connections because of discrimination and other issues. DNA tests don't prove ties to individual tribes because not enough Native people in the U S. And Canada have participated in DNA testing. If someone gets test results it's often based on tribes in Central and South America where people have been more widely tested.

I got so excited when I saw the Montague Genealogy Book! My Great Grandmother was a Pierpoint, here in the US, from the Pierrepont’s in the UK. We have the same story of coming over from France with William the Conqueror. I have to confess that I’ve been waiting for any mention of Mary Pierrepont Montague who married Edward Wortley Montague in 1712! She has such an amazing history!

My family has done extensive genealogy. It’s a family pastime and we use several of the popular genealogy apps. So this got me curious. I have an extreme distant relation (7th cousin/7th removed 😂) to the 4th Earl, but my kids are distantly related to the Earl of Sandwich through their fathers line who was the eighth cousin twice removed through Alberta Sturgis. We are all connected somehow aren’t we? 🤗🥰

Another theory on the Lozenges was that they represent a fancy-cut diamond-shaped sandwich with the 2 pieces of bread at each end and either cheese or beef or ham as the middle lozenge! (representing the first sandwich created at 3 AM on Sunday, June 9, 1678 in the kitchen at Hinchlote).
The 18th Century tower atop the Montacute hill was the first prototype of a thermos that, fortunately, they scaled down in size by 98% so you could enjoy your lonzengy sandwich with still-hot coffee at lunch.

I guess your husband and I are very likely cousins, but then as you dive deep into family origins, you discover that virtually all of us who have British ancestry are related. I can trace a direct line back to William I as well, but then there are pretty smart people who believe that anyone who had any British heritage is related to royalty. I don't agree with either the mathematics or the practical argument, but William is 27 generations back from me so if each generation had only two surviving offspring and each of them had only two more, that would mean that there are currently over 134 million descendants of William. Interesting and fun but does take a bit of the wind out of the sail of folks who think they are "special" if they can find a royal link. I'm also an American who finds history fascinating - love you and your channel.

I'm from Kentucky, where many highlanders immigrated from Scotland. Everyone of Scots ancestry I have met or whose online comments I have read claim to be descended from Robert the Bruce. My father has verified a lineage in my mother's ancestry and has almost verified a lineage through his own ancestry. They are both from southcentral Kentucky. Apparently, Robert liked to spread his oats!

Love this! I spent three days on the Island of Mull in Scotland in 2017 because my husbands Grandfather was a Maclean & Mull is the ancestral home of the Maclean clan with the Clan Chieftain occupying Duart Castle there. It so happens the Isle of Iona is a short ferry ride away where St Columba established a Christian Monastery in 583AD. So historical associations with the Clan go way back. I appreciate your enthusiasm for Luke’s families historic links & enjoyed the view from the tower.

Julie, please have your parents and siblings do this also. Actually, anyone in your maternal and fraternal line would be great. I wish it had been possible for my mother and dad to have taken these tests but both had passed away before they were available. I found out that I'm 25% Scottish and no one ever mentioned that.
The tablet is outstanding. I'm wondering if somehow digital copies could be made. I'm sure there are institutions in England that would love to have a copy for research reasons alone.
So great to see you at the tower, it's ironic that it is so close to Mapperton.
If your father-in-law hadn't known the origin of the coat of arms, I image the College of Arms would. They also might have an interest in the tablet. It so wonderful to have these moments of discovery and joy to balance out some of the bad news and the struggles that you, Luke, the Duke and Duchess go through to make Mapperton such a great place. Well done to you all.

Fascinating to learn about family history and who our ancestors were and how they lived. My family ancestors did a family tree up until my great grandparents. We are descended from Matilda of Flanders who was William the Conquerors wife. She herself was descended from Alfread the Great and Hugh Capet. Then of course it goes even further. I think if we all could trace this far back we are all in some way related. I also did a dna ancestry test out of curiosity to see how pure my British side is. My British side of my family also contained Scandinavian, French and German dna. It tells a story of how and where our ancestors migrated from.

Fascinating! Like you, I have been interested in the genealogy of both my mom and my dad's family. I have traveled to the Isle of Man and the UK to see the origins of my dad's family which is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. My mom's family originated in France and was an aristocratic family in the Bourbon line. It had a part in aiding the colonists in the American revolution and became one of the original Alcaldes for the city of New Orleans.

Ahhh one of my maternal ancestors was a Norman noble who followed Willam TC into Britian/Ireland. We found our original migrant into America. H arrived in James Co in 1620. Once we had that name entered the 'leafs' went crazy. Family crests were spread out over pages! Lord, Lady this & that. AS I remember he was the 3rd or 4th son. We assume the colonies offered him a shot to make his mark.

What a wonderful view! You are a natural at this! I lived in a house with a Martello tower in Jersey when I was little in the channel island but it was not nearly so high or on a pointy hill. ( :
We are back in Canada now and my mom and sister both did the heritage dna tests (I prefer to think of myself as spiritual being in a physical body and that we’ve lived countless lives and experienced something of everything) but there were lots of lovely and diverse surprises from the tests. I was impressed to find there were some Latin roots among many others explaining my love of Latin music. We had traced our family tree back to a British sailor who jumped shipped at risk of being flogged (he was later pardoned by the crown) and who built a school and church in a tiny island off of Newfoundland where he taught in a one room school and everyone lived happily. On the other side of my family a grandfather was found on a doorstep during the war and the test showed we had some Hebrew dna which I had guessed. Because of dad’s nose.
And now we all live happily ever after. The end. ( :

I'm decendened from 2 noble families. One of them is the Dean's (Deane, Denne, Dene, Den) Farthest so far I think is Robert de Den, or Robert de Denne. There's also a small branch that turned into A'Deane, but it seems the A got dropped soon enough.
The way your family tree is done with the cut outs is really neat.
I'm trying to go as far back as possible to finally get the tree put together. There isn't a finished one, maybe because it keeps being put off. However the tree of the generations here in the US is mostly all done, and was put together by Arthur Deane in the early 1900's, it just needs updating, but I'm focused on the oldest part of the tree. I find it interesting how intertwined french, english, scottish and irish families were, some german mingled as well but my german side, they mainly stayed put before, escaping mostly, to the US before ww2 began.
Btw, I'm most curious right now where the name Macnaderte (Macnader) came from. I know it's Scottish now, but we've 1 family member who had it as his middle name, which means it came from someone related closely, but that's where that trail stops. Sir William Macnaderte Deane. I can find his ancestors but it's that middle name I'd like to find the origins of.
To think, I've an 18th great grandparent that can be found amazes me!
This June, my father and others are trying to put together a small Dean reunion, from the decendents of his grandparents. My gut feeling says only a few Deans will show up because there's not that many still alive after his grandparents. Basically it'll turn out to just be a gathering of my cousins and some of my fathers cousins, which we love having chances of a gathering without it having to be a funeral.

  • @TiredMomma

While doing more family research on my side, I've come across the book The Knights of England, which includes the order of chivary for England, Scotland and Ireland, and of Knights Bachelors, book volume 2 by William Shaw.
In 1336 the first person listed is Edward de Montagu (Montecute), knighted by King Edward the 3rd.
I'm looking through the book trying to find knights "de Dene, or de Denne". That last name eventually changes to Deane/Dean, of which there is still descendents with those names to this day, such as Sir William Deane, in Australia. Up my tree there are 4 Sir William's. He must come down from one of them I'd guess. Wish I could speak to him, I don't care about the long distance call.
And um, there's an interesting mystery of how an ancestor, might be related to Rollo, the Viking. I've already found my way up the tree now to the Normans. There's a big land area that was granted to a Norman ancestor, and the articles, more than 2, say he did not lose his lands after the Conquest, but does not say the name of the land(s), but does say who granted the lands, William.
I didn't pay much attention in world history class, now I wish I did, but I'm enjoying writing down what I can find, especially any legit records.
*Den/Dene, I've read, also means a hill. Neat to have that kind of in common.

I thought it just might be a cute channel name and a play on the fun and well written novel “My American Duchess” by Eloisa James about rented pineapples in regency England.
Should we we call you my lady? My mom was gifted a square foot of land in Scotland by her love (for charity) so she could technically be called a lady too. But I just call her mom. ( :
And here I was looking forward to yoga lessons from Italy! 🧘‍♀️🦋✨ I’ve heard it’s as easy to manifest a castle as a button. Wishing you much happiness in your life. All that history does look fascinating! 💖

The rich history of these families and their homes is fascinating! I think it would be fabulous if you could do a collab with Karen Spencer of Althorp, Spencer 1508. She’s also digging into the history of their family home. To have two North Americans (Canadian and American) who have married into aristocracy sharing their experiences of being stewards of these amazing historically rich homes would be so interesting!

Is your family related to Duke of Montague and Boughton? I have been watching Treasure Houses of Britain and Boughton was one of the houses. The histories are very fascinating.

I have spotted that the name of 9th Earl's sister was Olga, which is a Slavic name. That made me wonder, did the family have Russian/Eastern European connections?

I'm on myheritage. They say I am 64.1% English (I am descended from the May family of Surrey England who came here to TX in 1860. I have met some of my English cousins at family reunions). 29.9% Scandinavian, 1.5% Iberian, 1.2% Welsh, .8% Finnish, 1.6% West Asian, .9% Siera Leonean. Ancestry and FTDNA show it a little differently.

I'm an American descendant of the Montagu who was married to Alice of Brotherton (granddaughter of Edward I). The story is that Alice died after being beaten up by her husband and some of his friends. I descend from her surviving daughter. Some sites say that she didn't have surviving children, others say she did. It is interesting.
