  • Julia Butterfly Hill was interviewed on June 23, 2021 by Trees Foundation’s Director of Development and Outreach, Kerry Reynolds. Julia Butterfly Hill ascended Luna-a giant 1,500-year-old redwood tree near Stafford, California-in December 1997. She lived in Luna for 738 days, until finally descending in December 1999 when an agreement was made with Pacific Lumber Company that protected Luna and a 200-foot buffer zone surrounding the tree.

This is one amazing lady. I am personally quite proud of her. I lived near Luna when she began her tree-sit. I witnessed the actual contempt for the environment that many locals felt. Yes, I saw folks go out of their way to trash the environment, as they saw the environment as being a threat to their livelihoods. Think about that, attacking the very environment that sustains your life.

A few days ago I remembered this fascinating story of Luna and want to make a drawing called "Courage", related to Julia Butterfly. When my friend told me about her several years ago, I watched everything I could find online about her. Her courage amazed me and at the same time, it scared me to see how my overwhelming fear at that time prevented me from doing what I really want to do in life. Now I feel much better about myself and started to make a series of drawings this year, called Poetry of Life, which is related to various issues we have as humanity. And so I thought of drawing this Luna phenomenon and shed light on this story. I have ordered the book "Legacy of Luna", and I can't wait to read it. I might get some better insights that will help me to make a powerful drawing of it.

Story as old as humanity...it's always a choice which "Wolf we choose to feed".And to your team point and diversity. People once tried to rope me into playing a mediation type role with activists. Meanwhile to your point of people recognizing Difference & being okay with that ~ yes! to agreeing to disagree and the work of Barbara Marx Hubbard that put the emphasis on Win/Win ( as opposed to the far too normalized win/lose mentality or who's right or who's better. It is possible. It requires poeple to be invested wholeheartedly in the good of the whole & keep letting go of me, mine, "ego" and the love of so-called "power", (usually more like domination). It's the not of all indigenous, but it is the way of those that lived( & live )harmoniously with nature and one another. Thank you for all you continue to do, may we each open to our part and live it. Great well being

Hi, Julia! The girl who walked across America for Democracy here, back in Seattle and teaching a new generation about what our kick-ass Gen tried to do. Amazing how few young Seattlites even know about the WTO! I always say that Earthfirsters were the bravest, most badass group of humans I’ve ever met, and am so glad that your videos from Luna are still out there, and I’m definitely passing them on. So much of our history has disappeared, but I’m still singing your praises, sister! Keep up the fight. I believe we’ve already won! Every action produces an equal effect. We’re just waiting for the conditions to be right for our youth to take over. Very much looking forward to that! Glad to see you’re still out there kicking ass. Stay safe and healthy!

There's a shirt on your wiki that says "Activism is Patriotism". I've learned over the years and met some middle agers who have devoted their lives to volunteerism, riding buses just like me little Americorps who makes like $9K/year. It's like the most extraordinary people are making sandwiches at homeless shelters and doing random jobs to get by once hollywood is gone after their major event (in your case Luna), but you're again left to fend for yourself. Kinda like Forest Gump stories, but without nice endings. I'm glad youtube is able to document what you humbly stand for. Also, loved your definition of courage!
