      Rachel Ipavec although seeds are not really poisonous for birds they are not healthy foods for birds to eat on a day to day basis. Seeds are full of fat and is basically junk food for birds which can result with the bird getting obese and/or getting fatty liver disease. For my cockatiel I’m giving him new healthier foods such as pellets, veggies like kale and nuts such as almonds that are high in protein and calcium those are much healthier options than an all-seed diet. Just saying, not to sound like a know-it-all.

    My experience was much different. I understand these steps for birds from a pet store or rescues that aren’t family or friendly but for me I purchased a 3 month old lovebird from a breeder and the baby was already hand tamed and super friendly. The first night he sat on a perch and watched me put his cage together and after that was left alone but the next day he immediately wanted attention and love. He would call out anytime someone walked by. So I decided to try to get him to step up and we’ve been inseparable since. He was super bonded to me in less than a week. Every bird is different and if I had left him alone those first few days he would’ve resented me. Now I’m not saying everyone who just got a bird should immediately play with it, that’s a horrible idea. I’m just saying know your birds body language etc. Sherbet is such a social bird and I take him practically everywhere with me. He understands strangers are cool when I’m out and about and people want to hold him and he knows to mind his manners. Some birds come preinstalled with the ability to be ready for human interactions right away due to handling by their breeder and others around.

    Soooooooo excited! I'm getting 2 Green Cheek Conures later this week!
    First of all, I've already gotten to know them. For the past few weeks, I've been going to visit the local pet store to visit them. My family and I have been hoping for them to go on sale, and they finally are. When we have gone, I let them come up to my finger and bite it, so that they get to know me. Today, when we went to seal the deal on the birds, the store owner took one out of the cage, and let me hold the bird on my finger.
    My family and I have fell in love with these birds, and we are excited that we can finally have them in our family! I've never taken care of a bird, but my dad used to have cockatiels so he is experienced with birds.

      They are doing really well! They have fully integrated into our household. Both conures are very happy and they both like me a lot (almost too much, they freak out at the sound of my voice). They enjoy flying around and I let them out of the cage every so often, usually twice or thrice a day. They have even begun talking a little bit (one of their favorite phrases is "pretty bird"!) They are really smart and
      funny, and I enjoy having them as pets.

The reason I ask is because it would make me pretty irritated if there’s such a double standard there in terms of jokes, that you could make a joke about treating a male like that but not a female. The joke of treating a boyfriend like that should be applicable to a girlfriend as well, there shouldn’t be a double standard!

    All good suggestions and I’ll add one more. I played videos of conures talking, and within three days he couldn’t resist and came down by the phone. The next day he started climbing up on my hand and the phone. At the end of the first week, he already began seeking my hand for head stroking. This is my most recent addition to the family, a four month old green cheek. A few years ago, I got a sun and the video thing didn’t occur to me. He was eight months old and it took about 4-5 weeks to reach that level of comfort. They get along great which relieves me.

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  9 ปีที่แล้ว +94

      No worries, I love questions! Polytetrafluoroethylene is used on non-stick pans, often referred to as simply Teflon among other brands, is highly toxic to all birds if heated over the normal cooking range or if it's scratched or damaged in any way. It will often cause sudden death to a bird before there's any chance to help them. Here's a link for more details about it www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=15+1829&aid=2874

    • @Crows_Den
      @Crows_Den 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think they give off toxic fumes when heated? Er- at least fumes that can hurt your birds. I'm not an expert though. I'd need to look it up.

    • @LordDragox412
      @LordDragox412 9 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      PTFE toxicosis, or to simply put teflon poisoning is a really big problem in households with parrots if you're using a non-stick pan. When the teflon surface gets too hot (or should I say when it gets scorched/burned), it releases fumes that are deadly for parrots even in really really small amounts (usually, their respiratory functions fail). If you're cooking something on medium to high heat, there's a great risk of that happening, even if you might not notice it (you get in the danger zone when you get near the 400 degrees Fahrenheit - teflon won't oxidize yet, but it can chip small pieces away (especially if the pan is damaged or scratched even a little bit), and if one gets near the burner and gets to around 600 degrees Fahrenheit, you've got yourself a deadly cloud that you don't even know about, and this cloud can easily spread all over the place. The PTFE is also dangerous to humans, but because we're much more resistant to it, in case of letting such situation happen we'll only get a flu-like symptoms and deal with it. Don't worry, almost no one knows about it. Even I had to google it and was quite surprised by it... xD
      Edit: Aww, dang it xD I took too much time to do the research and was 12 minutes late with the answer. Oh well xD

    AnimalWonders Montana When I brought home a new bird, I'd spent quite a few hours with her at the store she was at over the course of several weeks. It got to where she wouldn't want to be put down in the store. So, I think that made the transition much easier for her as we'd formed a bit of a trust bond before owning her.

    I have a 10yo-ish Sun Conure. I'm his fourth owner and I got him 6 years ago from a young couple with a new bub. The noise the bird made because he was being ignored kept the bub awake so they locked him in a laundry. After I bought him home, we bonded quickly, but due to the fact that I don't have friends or family who can visit regularly, he hasn't been socialised. He goes on alert if someone walks past on the street (he does what I call his tough bird dance - so cute), he has tried to take on pizza delivery boys, mailmen, visitors and when my Dad can visit he gets very stressed out. If my Dad gets too close to me while I have him and he can't reach my Dad, I cop his wrath. I can't see a fix to the situation, but what amazes me is how such a tiny bird is so ready to take on my 6ft 4, solid Dad.

    i got my green cheek conure last year when it was 3 months old. when i first got him he warmed up to me right away, as soon as i let him get out on his own to perch on my finger. he even laid out on my arm to nap. (thought it was the cutest thing ever)
    he's now a year old and he's very vocal then normal GCC i know. guess from alot of human interaction with me. he likes playing peekaboo or saying his name in different ways. he says many different things. he only goes to the cage to sleep or eat. longest i left him alone was 2 days. He seems to always wants to be with me. he's the cuddlest bird i ever had. specially with play time he likes to roll on his back with his ball or play fetch with me or peekaboo.
    the only problem i have with him is him getting him use to the harness and getting him to stop going in keyboard tray (making screeching sounds) as funny as it is.. it gets kinda annoying sometimes when working or drawing on the computer lol. The harness he only puts his head through and pulls away after he gets the treat at least its some work in progress.
    He don't seem interested in much toys i make or buy him. He also attacks my phone when it rings or bites my finger when i try to get it. or.. tries to attack people on the monitor like he did just now on the video with you LOL! guess he dont like strangers. I love him to bits just wish he calms down with attacking. or getting into places he shouldn't
    I'v gotten use to his bites at least. any ideas how to help with his attacking? xD

    This is a really really good video for people getting brand new birds from pet stores and rescues. I remember driving out 5 hours to pick up my young sun conure from a breeder.. and me and my friend ended up playing with her a little on the way home. She was constantly begging for attention though, and made lots of noises at us and puffed up, pushing her head at our fingers for scritches. From the moment I brought her home, to the 4-5 year old darling she is now, she's been a complete snuggle bug. She was tired when we came home, and explored her cage and wanted nothing to do with us, but the next day she wanted out of her cage and to play on us and with foot toys we had gotten. I think it might depend sometimes if the bird has been hand raised, and even their personality.
    But I would definitely use this advice for ANY pet store birds who are already high strung and not well socialized. Thanks for the great new tips!

      Nagol Bud while it's true that not everyone knows what they're saying I'm quite certain AnimalWonders does. Really how comfortable your bird is will depend on your bird's background (how much it has interacted with humans, whether or not it was hand-raised, did it spend time around other birds, etc.), individual personality and its age.
      Your bird was only two months old, which means it would have adapted to humans easier than say an older individual, which is probably what AnimalWonders Montana runs into for their rescues and what the majority of the audience is likely to get since most people buy their birds from chain pet stores, which I think are usually around a year old.
      I don't know if straight up ignoring your bird is the way to go, but generally if the bird isn't tamed it's advised that you give it some space to adjust when it first arrives home, which I think is what AnimalWonders was trying to get at.

    • @mcalero8432
      @mcalero8432 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Most of this advice is good for hammies, too!
    we had a little hamster a while back and this is pretty much how we adjusted him to the new home. Word to the wise: Hammies will nibble just as much as birds! Less because they're "feeling out" your finger, and more because they're actually wondering if it's food, I think. Ours would do that quite often, especially if we'd just cleaned his cage or handled his food.

    Love your videos Jess always learn a new tip, I've been rescuing animals for years and always pick up something new from you, also since I've had and re-homed many birds you have to be prepared to take some bites. Many times they like to see how your reaction is, it's not really a mean get away from me bite, it's just a reaction they want see. if they don't want you near them the bite is a very mean taring bite followed by a retreat, believe me you'll know the difference. If you take one of these painful bites it's extremely important to not react negatively but get them back in their enclosure as quick as possible ! If they bite and fly keep a perch handy they may trust that more then a finger, but get them back in their cage and have nothing to do with them the rest of the day as long as they have food and water. And remember tomorrow is a new day, Keep up the great work Jess .

      I would personally. It really gives them time to adjust. If they are already comfortable with you then they will begin seeking out your attention. If that happens before 3 days is up, I'd go ahead and do some slow interactions with lots of quiet praise and treats. If all goes well then you can proceed with your relationship as you both grow together.

    Hello Jessi! I really enjoyed your channel and all the videos.
    I just got a GCC last week and he was ~3 month old. I ignored him for the first 3 days then started to try to interact with him. He seemed to be OK when he firstly got home, didn't refuse to eat or play with new toys. However he was really bitey (and we were already warned by the pet farm) when I put my finger near him, or he just stayed as far away from me as possible (always moved in the opposite direction). I also tried to offer treats (sunflower seeds, millet) with my hands and he would carefully/slowly approach to grab the treats then immediately escape...My previous parakeet was much easier to warm up (stepped on my finger on the first day) so I wonder what should I do to let him gradually get used to me? Thank you!

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      If he's taking the treats from your hand, keep doing that! Do that for weeks if needed. Don't rush him or you could set yourself back even further. Building trust can take a day with some animals and much much longer with others. Getting him to step on your finger will come after he no longer feels the need to run away after talking the treat.

    I'm not sure if I agree with this. You need to do everything around them like you would do everyday. When I got my amazon we had a 3 hour drive home. I talked to him, sang to him. He bonded with me within those 3 hours. About 20 mins after we got home I was setting his cage up & he flew to me. He rubbed his head on my cheeks & loved it. I would recommend not ignoring them for a couple of days. Obviously don't try & touch them for at least a day unless they come to you. Like my amazon.

    My parrot is obviously a weird one when comparing what I should have done with this video. I put his carrier cage open for him to climb into the cage but instead he leapt out onto me and snuggled behind my ear. I was so confused. He didn’t let me pet him, he was scared of fingers, but he would step up onto my arm. He would happily take a seed out of my hand and would cry out if I left his line of sight, he still doesn’t LOVE fingers but he’s getting better and better.

    I'm about to adopt a red capped conure... she's at least 12 years old and has been traumatized by the current owners husband (he doesn't like how loud she is) putting egg cartons around her cage (attempting to middle her noises but really just isolating her in the dark) she's lived with 2 African Grey's and the owner has admitted she didn't work with her as much as she should've (she worked at a rescue and that's how she got most of her animals, so She's not really sure on the age or previous behaviour issues) so Tinker (the parrot I'll be taking) isn't familiar with "step up" and is prone to biting hands and fingers, I'm picking her up today and I'm glad I watched this because I would've talked to her the whole way home, hoping to comfort her) and would've allowed her to freely roam the room I have ready for her (she'll be roomies with my 3 hedgehogs) going in daily to feed and water and attempt to familiarize her with my voice and mannerisms.
    I had a sun conure that passed away a few months ago so I'd love to have another feathery friend... is there anything I can do for an older bird to trust me (being at least her 3rd home I'm worried her age and memory will make her isolate and become depressed) and feel comfortable? she doesn't interact much with anyone but the lady I'm getting her from (and she strongly dislikes men, for obvious reasons she gets defensive when she sees the husband) would another bird help her or No? I usually play music throughout the day (it's good for my plants lol) would that be too much? I appreciate your time & help!!

He is so sweet but I hope I didn’t do anything wrong . To make sure he would go into his cage on command I would tell him to step up with a seed on my hand and I put go to the cage and when he steps down I would reward him . And tell him good job . So my bird wasn’t as scared on the first day .

    I just got my Cockatiels about 4 days ago now, very new of course and there is 2 of them. I feel like I've researched a lot about how to tame and stuff (probably too much). I've searched that some people leave their hand in the cage at first so that the bird can get used to them, I've done the same thing throughout the 4 days. I'm not too sure if it was right or not, but they did seem to be able to walk over it or have a little nibble at it etc, but I can't move too much of course or else they will panic. Oh and also they can safely eat out of my hand. I guess It is going to take longer than I thought to tame them. I also moved them from the dining/kitchen to my room just before because I think it would be best to let them out in a smaller room. On another note, I noticed a lot of these handy videos have their birds wings clipped, but they never say WHEN they clipped the birds wings. Should I wait a little longer for them to settle to be able to clip their wings? Its only been 4 days, they are really shy too. Trying my best everyday, i think I should change my way of training though.

    This is mostly applicable to baby birds, with rescues the first 24 hours is crucial. You need to spend time with them in the first 24 hours in increments no longer than five minutes in the beginning. The difference is that with rescues often they’re accustomed to some kind of social interaction wether it’s with other birds or people whereas babies everything is very new and they stress much easier. Though the steps that she mentioned do work with adult rescue parrots they may get more stressed and resort to self harm or biting.

    If your massive macaw is biting your finger, don't take it away, keep it there otherwise they will realize that biting works to get you to go away. Ignore the crunching noise coming from your bones, this is perfectly normal. Once your finger has been thoroughly separated from your hand by the macaw's beak you may be losing a lot of blood, but keep your cool.

      birds and pet care It depends on if your birds were hand fed babies, or if they are older, sat in a pet store for months, or have had trauma in their lives. Most birds do not do well transferring into a new home until they have settled in for a few days. I'm glad your bird's experience was an easy transition, but for many birds and their humans starting off on the wrong foot can spell out years of stress.

    Actually, the most common advice given is to interact with your bird right away to let them know they are safe and let them know how your household is like on the daily. You don't force them in doing anything, the cage shall be open so the bird can explore its surroundings but engaging is a must.

    I have a Sun Conure. He is a rescue. He is a one person bird. I have him out when I’m awake. Like all day. He does get cage time. I feed him Harrison’s food. I’ve tryed to socialize him, but he will bite anyone but me. He is protective of me, and I’m the most interesting person to him. The only time he goes to someone is if they have food he likes. When he’s done, he will bite them. He flew to my grandma, but didn’t bite. The only time he bit me, is when we first met. And when I blocked him from biting my mom. I also have problems with him wanting to go to his cage at night. He will sleep on me at night before I go to bed because I’m nice and warm. I’m thinking about buying a bird warmer for him to cuddle at night to keep warm. It’s so hard to get him to go to his cage without him flying to me. But we are working on it. Any tips?

Skye shakes his/her head and makes the sound "chirp, chirp" as if Skye is saying, "No,no, no." This is not the quaking that quaker babies are known for, but I don't know what this really means. Also, if Skye does step up, then Skye takes off and flies across the room. Skye has slightly clipped wings, but can still glide and fly about 5-8 feet, gliding down. Thanks.
