Watching you work takes me back in time. Life time driving tractors (orchards) and trucks (everything everywhere). I was a driver who always respected and appreciated mechanics. Now that I'm old, wore out and tore up, i really do enjoy dreaming back in time while sitting in my rocker. And that is OK. Someday, hopefully, you will get there too. God willing. Thanks for sharing what you do. I always look forward to your videos.
Another Warren video!!! The best mechanic on TH-cam!!! I don't know if you sleep but I hope you get a little shut eye. Just finishing watching this video and can't wait for the next. God has blessed you in many ways and hope all is well with you and the family. I hope you'll be able to take a vacation with the family this summer but I do realize you have to make hay when the sun shines. Have a great week!!!
Great video man! Thanks for sharing how you got proper backlash. It was good to hear that you actually can stack gaskets in order to get proper spacing. Way cool stuff. Get er choochin.
I would think there is a control valve on the trailer that would port the oil to return when not in use. I think you said it was some kind of belt drive, so when the valve is activated the oil is ported to a Hydraulic motor, then to the return. Usually there is a relief valve on the pump, but I couldn't see one. So like you said, you need a relief valve on the truck, so if the pump was engaged without the hoses hooked up, it would not blow up the pump. Being that the flow is constant, I would think that a high flow filter in the return to the tank would be what you need there. Maybe its just me, but I would have removed pump first, then mount the PTO. Save that old back for another day. Great videos. Keep em comin.
It's never easy working on your back outside and when you have to lift a part up from underneath a vehicle and fit it on your own it can be a real nasty job. Great video young man!
I think they put the filter after the relief, because it has a constant maximum flow. If you are using a tipper there is two much oil for the filter to handle on the down stroke.
Western Truck guy! I like the vids and commentary. I run a small auto repair and small engines etc outfit...not the point. When i have bolts to hold up or are just awkward...I'll put a rubber band around the threads to hold em, them once I get the threads started cut the band and pull it out. Works for keeping bolts arranged in a unit during disassembly too.
How you keep all that knowledge stored in your head is amazing. Another great job Warren. You get asked to do a lot of retrofitting on those trucks don't you? Good luck with it!
I would suggest Filter on the return as you said, it's low pressure (just make sure it can handle the volume) and will filter the oil back to tank in the event of a failure in any part of the circuit. Can always go into bypass if required with the good quality filter/base.
Warren another good video. Invest in all thread different sizes and use that on heavy parts to make it easier on your body. Keep safe you and your family.
When you said "I got to get my knee in the right place" I fell out remembering how many times I was forced to say those same damn words. Man do cause me flash-backs.
I always pulled the shift cover on the PTO to check the gear lash. It also allowed you to see the gear alignment. Just a way to be sure you had the right PTO.
you are a pro mechanic. the same level as rocky...the way you have to fight that metal monster and roll around on the dirt, if it were up to me you would have a coach with a pale of water a sponge to wipe your face, and a towel to dry it..and rub your shoulders saying"ok rock you ready for your next job you can get uhm" thanks for showing up to work every day!!!
Holy cow I would’ve split that PTO from the pump , I was wondering why you took the other cover off , that’s how i usually do backlash is take the slave off of the PTO
We hear all that grunting and blowing and we try to help you but, there's nothing we can do but watch..Thanks for taking us alone with you..Watch that old back..See Ya Texas
Excellent video Warren. I felt every stone on your back fighting with that PTO. How about digging a walk-in inspection pit so you do not have to be a contortionist?
I don’t know if you’ll see this Warren. But the problem you’ve mentioned in other videos, about go pros going out on ya. I was wondering if you had one of the water proof cases for it? Because you could only speculate, but i think your getting liquids down inside of them, and that might be why the sound is going out on ya. For example the lens and the actual case of the camera would have a small enough gap even if you can’t see it with the naked eye, it would be there. That is assuming you don’t have one or haven’t tried it before. All of your attachments will still work for it, just know that’s what people use for their motorcycles for example. Just figured i would pass it on, and if it works could save ya money
How to keep oil from running out of a tank when you disconnect a line with no shut off. Saw that done by using a shop vacuum. Padded the hose with cloth strips, stuck in the top of tank and turned vacuum on. Created enough pull to hold the oil in tank, no loss when line disconnected.
Hey Warren, love your vids, but we are back to fading sound again. Have a good week! Im about 3 and a half hrs. north of you ,around Elmira, Or. Todd the retired trucker.
Another awsome Video i really enjoy watching your Videos i like it after a hard day at work a warren lane movie nothing better just watching and lerning from the master him self i try become like you warren
How is the motor grader doing? We always ran the filters on the return. If running the filter on the bypass then only bypass oil is filtered. Plus on a external filter I would rather filter lower pressure in case of a rupture.
in 1991 had a 1989 Kenworth that Eaton put those water cooled oil coolers on, it failed and dumped all the coolant into the transmission and it looked like that oil, prefer the oil to air coolers mounted in front of the radiator
I installed many many ptos and not once did I ever use a dial indicator to set the backlash, it was always by feel. Never had a problem. I never pulled the bottom plate either, didn't need to.
Yea I do it by feel as well on my truck But if it fails I can only slap myself and don't tell anyone, never had a failure But how's that going to hold up when the customer what's to know why he's stuck on the side of the road If your doing it for other people you gotta be careful cause it's not just the driver chasing you down Bloke in the local town fitted a pto to a kenworth, he'd done it loads of times over 30yrs Part of that is remove 1 fuel tank cut it in half and convert one half to the hydraulic tank Driver was going cross country and the tank cracked Dropped 500lts of deisel on the road Yea big drama just replace the tank $2000 Exept he was in the middle of nowhere so its a 1000km drive out there, he had a freezer van on so the 20toones of cheese cake was destroyed by the time the truck got going And there's 500lts of deisel on a main highway By the time it was all said and done it cost him $50k for the freight loss environmental clean up and paying another mechanic to go out and replace the tank Insurance didn't cover a cent because he never got the tank tested and wasn't a qualified welder Nearly sent him broke in the end Had to sell his business Gotta follow the rules when someone else is paying the bills
Always hated pulling or installing the stupid things. For their size, they're heavy, awkward and you don't get much room while laying under it. And they make clutch swaps even more "fun".
I know a 13 speed held 5 gallons of oil in a 78 GMC Brigadier 318 noisy bastard 😂😂😂

Must be in the 100s down there eh Warren??? Still flooding and monsoon rains in BC , oh well it's good for the forest , that looks like a level 9.8 swear job so many it's time for some F bombs lol
I use larger pieces of scrap cardboard, Yes large rocks chew thru and oil soaks. Sometimes only get one job out of a piece. Easier to slide on with no splinters is a big advantage.
Hey Warren did you hear about the little kid that came home and asked his dad, what a gynecologist does, his dad paused for a minute and said he reads lips
Hay I have a question, I have a war out old Linkbelt excavator, and it’s leaky, can I use motor oil for hydraulic oil, ??? My thinking is 30 weight straight ,will be thinker and stay in the rams cylinders longer ??? Thanks,.
Watched a video of the owner peeling off the decals of the company he used to work for, and put on his own name. Soon as I saw his location, I though of you.
How does a Western Star compare in quality and durability to a Volvo? Also that's not a Chihuahua barking in the video, that sounds more like a shih tzu, at least to me
G'day Warren, I've done hundreds of truck hydraulic setups, if you need any info/photos shoot me an email: subarusti_@hotmail.com In an ideal world, you'd run 2 filters, one of feed and one on return. Most people run a single filter due to cost and it's always on the return back to tank, especially on tipper setups. Tipper wants 2500psi relief, 1'' feed and return lines and 1 1/4'' suction for pump. installing PTO without pump is way easier too, those PTOs are damn heavy when ya got not alot of room to move. We always only ran one thick and one thin gasket, grease them together and stick to bottom of housing then lift PTO for easiest install.
Just a quick comment not really a mechanical one. I notice these days many people use the word “ way” incorrectly. Way this and way that. Way more than, instead of far more or much more, etc. I suppose that goes along with the failure of our language. He went that way or that is the way this is done, for example.
Wouldn’t cost to much to dig a pit to make working under them truck easier on your back and shoulders, I’m sure your wife would appreciate not having grit and gravel in the washing machine as well.

Filter goes on the return side after the coupler bar return side hose before going to the tank
That oil looked like liquid caramel. lol

Very good point. I've seen a gearbox wrecked with the right PTO but fitted with no shims, it broke the teeth off the drive gear.
I think we can all agree that this title is installing a permanent oil leak😂
Great to see more great informational videos and where's your helper Blake
Thanks for sharing another great job Warren. Have a Great week bud.

Excellent video well done Warren thanks for your time 👍 😎
Warren you should take more care of your back seeing you lie down on hardcore especially with your back history, take care my friend.
I can certainly identify with the gymnastic twists and turns needed to repair stuff underneath vehicles.
I like that white truck with the tool box u should do a video on that been considering a utility bed or something

Genius idea.
I'll do the same when welding a Diesel tank that has fuel in it. Never thought to do it with a hydraulic tank though.
Hey Wats up keep up the good work I like Ur videos I'm from guyana
Your vids sure end suddenly Warren! I like em thou.
another job another day as long as they keep coming things will be ok
Ever thought about investing in a pit make life a lot easier love your videos keep it up

Part 1? That's a bad sign. Jk. Really appreciate these videos

I installed many many ptos and not once did I ever use a dial indicator to set the backlash, it was always by feel. Never had a problem. I never pulled the bottom plate either, didn't need to.
Sounds like you got a master class in how to do it properly, you can thank Warren later.
Yea I do it by feel as well on my truck
But if it fails I can only slap myself and don't tell anyone, never had a failure
But how's that going to hold up when the customer what's to know why he's stuck on the side of the road
If your doing it for other people you gotta be careful cause it's not just the driver chasing you down
Bloke in the local town fitted a pto to a kenworth, he'd done it loads of times over 30yrs
Part of that is remove 1 fuel tank cut it in half and convert one half to the hydraulic tank
Driver was going cross country and the tank cracked
Dropped 500lts of deisel on the road
Yea big drama just replace the tank $2000
Exept he was in the middle of nowhere so its a 1000km drive out there, he had a freezer van on so the 20toones of cheese cake was destroyed by the time the truck got going
And there's 500lts of deisel on a main highway
By the time it was all said and done it cost him $50k for the freight loss environmental clean up and paying another mechanic to go out and replace the tank
Insurance didn't cover a cent because he never got the tank tested and wasn't a qualified welder
Nearly sent him broke in the end
Had to sell his business
Gotta follow the rules when someone else is paying the bills
