Dating a cosplayer... Its like dating an actor, model, athlete, all-in-one I think. Its like dating an actor, in that they might jump from character to character with each convention like an actor might jump with each movie/TV job. Also like an actor/actress, the cosplayer will get attention for the character they are portraying, not really for the person that is doing it. Its like dating a model, in that they will be stopped several times to get their picture taken. And some fans will want their picture taken with you. And some people follow you A LOT on social media. Its like dating an athlete, in that you prepare for it (the convention), and you start collecting things (like fabric, tools, reference pictures) much like an athlete will start collecting work out equipment and nutrition supplements. The next thing you know, they have an entire room dedicated to their thing. Also, as the convention gets near, their free time will start to get all absorbed in the crunch time before the event. You wouldn't expect an athlete or actress to be hanging out shortly before the game / opening night. Don't expect the cosplayer to be hanging out on social media or text messaging. They are probably FINALLY getting serious about getting their costume together, and maybe adding something to make it better. P.S. I cover comic cons, dress-up, and have three daughters that are cosplayers.
My dad is my occasional handler and agrees with you 100%. Though in prep for attending cons without him, I have adopted the method of taking and empty suitcase with me while I cosplay so I can stop and put my stuff in or on the case during photos. It also helps me store my shoes/props/wigs/purse when the day gets too long. Every night I dump out my stuff in my hotel room and prep for the dances and take the bare minimum. Perhaps you can buy some suitcases for your cosplayers so they can handle themselves when you get run too ragged, lol.
Most important thing about dating a cosplayer? Just know once my Luigi hat is on I am no longer who I once was. It's Luigi from that point forward until the hat comes off. Same applies when I do other costumes.

ive literally never met a deadpool cosplayer who wasnt an awesome person. most common cosplays are a mixed bag but nope. once a deadpool helped me rebraid part of my wig that had come loose even though he had no idea how to braid before he met me

I think the biggest thing that people in general need to realize about cosplay is that it combines so many arts into one thing. There's the sewing, crafting, painting, possibly woodworking for props, wig styling, makeup art, and of course the theatrical aspects of posing and performing in costume contests. It's so multifaceted and if it seems like someone is doing something different for cosplay everyday, it's pretty normal. Also being open. Being a different fictional species like elf or alien, a different gender, or even a Pokemon or animal is all cosplay and can be weird to see someone being so different. I'm fortunate that my boyfriend is willing to try cosplay as long as I make some of the sewn parts, but I'm super into it, more than anyone else I've met in person.

Something to definitely consider is that you're going to be a handler and a body guard. It's really easy to get overwhelmed while in cosplay, like overheating, forgetting to eat. You also need to consider there may be creeps that you'll need to help fend off because it may be difficult for me if I'm carrying huge props or can't move as easily. I'd rather my boyfriend deal with a creep like saying "Hey, you can't do that" if he sees something. Also consider you'll be a handler, I'll need help getting in and out of cosplay (especially if I'm wearing a mask or something that deters my vision). I'll need help handling my props sometimes, holding the bags and taking pictures. If you make it seem like I'm being a bother then there's an issue because even though I'm cosplaying, I'm still your partner and I'm considerate of your fun too. There's a lot to do on con day and even a bit of help is so appreciated.

There are a lot of things that you'll have to deal with that you've never dealt with before and it can be really frustrating, but the most important thing is to be there for your significant other and to be supportive!
Another thing is to know that you probably won't see them for at least 2 or 3 days before a con because they are most likely working really late at night to finish a cosplay. Then sleep, eat, shower(maybe), work on cosplay. And repeat for that 2-3 day period until the con is over. Then they work on another for future cons. And they are most likey very tried, stressed, annoyed, and locked in there room and if you try to contact them they will snap.

When I think about how my boyfriend looked at me when I first cosplayed as a guy. 😂 He always asks me how much more of his closet space I need and how I can actually craft and buy more cosplays when I even have 35 wigs in the closet and 10 of them are blue. My answer is always: "This wig is dark blue, this wig is magenta, this wig is light blue... and these are to short or too curly for the character". 😅

You pretty much covered everything someone would need to know. About the only other thing I can think of is if you don't know the characters your boyfriend or girlfriend is dressing as, find out more about the characters so you can understand more: look up their wiki bios, watch episodes on TH-cam, learn how the character acts/walks/talks (depending on how INTO the character your lover wants to be at the con). Learn a little about the other characters in the same series so you can spot them at the con.

I think you should consider with how they speak with you, because the cosplayer can make lots of references when not in cosplay but sometimes the cosplayer will be in-character and sometimes even voice as them, they might even want you to come with them to show off their cosplays to other people. (At least for me, because my boyfriend is always so confused when I Junko pose randomly around the house but then think that I am being really weird and then gets weirded out when I voice characters in cosplay because he's used to me voicing when I'm NOT in cosplay)

If the cosplayer is anything like me then you will get subjected to a lot of complaining about something not working, a lot of excitement when something is finished, and a lot of nonsense chitchat about whatever the cosplayer is currently working on. Sometimes my fiancé calls me from work while I'm working on a project and I spend the whole break talking about what plans and ideas I have for building this and putting that together. He doesn't cosplay (at least not yet) but he still genuinely enjoys listening to me being passionate about my craft so it's really nice.
Consider that some of us will wear cosplay sometimes while not at a Con. Another thing is that some of us like being (in lamens terms) “kinky” in cosplay sometimes. And of course, try to get interested in cosplay too, specifically what we’re interested in cosplaying.
Definitely the multiple personalities, I most commonly am found in Lucy Heartfilia, Hitoshi Shinso, Mavis Vermillion, Veronica Sawyer, Natsuki, Valkyrie Cain and Shota Aizawa. So a Boyfriend/Girlfriend for me would have to be prepared to walk in and I'm half in cosplay screaming at the mirror, crying, aggressively doing eyeliner again, trying to fix something that broke or getting into character. Another thing is just the house looking like a bomb went off two weeks before con and for about a week after. I'm not tidying up right after con, I'm tired and grumpy.
Listen me and my girlfriend and I do cosplays. She's very much better at carving, precise sculpting, painting and sewing. While I'm better in the garage doing wood work and molding plastic into prop weapons and armor pieces. So we've had disagreements on how to do things. I had a post apocalyptic raider cosplay and so I decided of doing neat and clean looking I was ripping apart clothes and it looked rough and uneven which was what I wanted but she told me she'd clean it up for me but I declined. So please just understand when someone says they think something is perfect for what they want don't push your different way of working on it.
For me, it would be respect what cosplayers do and the time, budgeting, and money they put into their cosplays. Respect them is the big thing, no matter what the cosplayer cosplays, respect them. They put time and effort into making them.

When I think about how my boyfriend looked at me when I first cosplayed as a guy. 😂
He always asks me how much more of his closet space I need and how I can actually craft and buy more cosplays when I even have 35 wigs in the closet and 10 of them are blue. My answer is always: "This wig is dark blue, this wig is magenta, this wig is light blue... and these are to short or too curly for the character". 😅
My partner does a lot of homemade cosplays. I personally don’t but I think the art of it is super cool, the biggest thing is to just be supportive and understand how hard they work on their cosplays 💕
Ok so some times I will accidentally talk in a Brooklyn accent (because I learnt it for Harley Quinn) to my girlfriend and some time even my teachers get hit with my Harley Quinn impression 😂

You pretty much covered everything someone would need to know. About the only other thing I can think of is if you don't know the characters your boyfriend or girlfriend is dressing as, find out more about the characters so you can understand more: look up their wiki bios, watch episodes on TH-cam, learn how the character acts/walks/talks (depending on how INTO the character your lover wants to be at the con). Learn a little about the other characters in the same series so you can spot them at the con.
I'm going to try to start doing cosplaying because it always looks like so much fun but exhausting as well.
It's only as exhausting as you let it become. It's perfectly OK to buy a costume or do a closet cosplay and just have fun with it.

Honestly it's fair on his part, i mean if he met you while you were still presenting as female, even if you were open about being transgender, i can see why a straight guy would have apprehensions about "his girlfriend" (in terms of how they thought) dressing as a male, especially if they've never been exposed to it, it's a shame how people will let their perceived masculinity get in the way of relationships and experiences.

I'm actually just one of the cosplayers who just getting started joining Cons and same answers, I think someone should consider the fact they must prepared for anything especially being the handler.
When you date a cosplayer you'll be kinda confused about how tf they actually look like. Get used to basically dating different person.
managed to meet my bf at a con so its madness when we're both working on cosplays at the same time. what is handy is when he procrastinates on his cosplay he tends to help me work on mine.
They should not take my personality seriously when in cosplay. I’m cosplaying a lawyer, (Miles Edgeworth, PWAA) and I don’t want them to take it the wrong way when I start calling everyone a clown, and screaming “Objection!”.
And also consider going to a lot of cons all year round.
I think people should consider we don’t do this for fame or to look attractive, we do this for fun, for a hobby. Sure it may be expensive, but who just spent $60 on animal crossing? We are there for the laughs
Maybe always try to give the cosplayer ideas on what you think they’d like to cosplay as or just give the cosplayer more anime’s to watch so they can cosplay as much as they want and be happy
I think you should consider with how they speak with you, because the cosplayer can make lots of references when not in cosplay but sometimes the cosplayer will be in-character and sometimes even voice as them, they might even want you to come with them to show off their cosplays to other people.
(At least for me, because my boyfriend is always so confused when I Junko pose randomly around the house but then think that I am being really weird and then gets weirded out when I voice characters in cosplay because he's used to me voicing when I'm NOT in cosplay)

My last relationship was ruined because of these things. They were upset because I didn't pay enough attention to them at con and wanted all my attention at them. Con is only 3 days long and I use that time to see my friends that live 6 hrs away from me. On top of that got jealous over a cosplay guy friend of mine and thought I would leave them for him. All because he was somewhat muscular. And ruined basically 2 cons for me because I didn't meet their expectations.

If the cosplayer is anything like me then you will get subjected to a lot of complaining about something not working, a lot of excitement when something is finished, and a lot of nonsense chitchat about whatever the cosplayer is currently working on.
Sometimes my fiancé calls me from work while I'm working on a project and I spend the whole break talking about what plans and ideas I have for building this and putting that together. He doesn't cosplay (at least not yet) but he still genuinely enjoys listening to me being passionate about my craft so it's really nice.

Another thing is that some of us like being (in lamens terms) “kinky” in cosplay sometimes.

Definitely the multiple personalities, I most commonly am found in Lucy Heartfilia, Hitoshi Shinso, Mavis Vermillion, Veronica Sawyer, Natsuki, Valkyrie Cain and Shota Aizawa. So a Boyfriend/Girlfriend for me would have to be prepared to walk in and I'm half in cosplay screaming at the mirror, crying, aggressively doing eyeliner again, trying to fix something that broke or getting into character. Another thing is just the house looking like a bomb went off two weeks before con and for about a week after. I'm not tidying up right after con, I'm tired and grumpy.
If you can’t date the character date the cosplayer
Listen me and my girlfriend and I do cosplays. She's very much better at carving, precise sculpting, painting and sewing. While I'm better in the garage doing wood work and molding plastic into prop weapons and armor pieces. So we've had disagreements on how to do things. I had a post apocalyptic raider cosplay and so I decided of doing neat and clean looking I was ripping apart clothes and it looked rough and uneven which was what I wanted but she told me she'd clean it up for me but I declined. So please just understand when someone says they think something is perfect for what they want don't push your different way of working on it.
For me, it would be respect what cosplayers do and the time, budgeting, and money they put into their cosplays. Respect them is the big thing, no matter what the cosplayer cosplays, respect them. They put time and effort into making them.
