Harsh Criticisms of Bright Line Eating (and How They're Scientifically Unfounded)

  • I had a lot swirling around in my head while shooting this week's Vlog. I never use a teleprompter or have any kind of script, which can be a bit daunting at times when I'm discussing important and nuanced topics like the ones covered today: harsh criticisms of BLE and response inhibition. Watch to hear the fascinating way that they intersect.

Excellent vlog, Susan. I tried "intuitive eating" for a year, during which I gained 20 pounds and 2 pants sizes. After finding BLE I lost 40 pounds and 4 pants sizes and have maintained it for 3 years. 'Nuf said!

I'm starting bright line when the book gets to my house. I too have been eating intuitively, and with no sugar and no flour for months now, but zero weight loss. I need to track my food intake & I'm excited about having some additional structure.
I hope your weight loss journey is still going well 😊

I believe I know the dietitian that you are referencing here and she is just that. She has no idea what it is like to have absolutely no control of the food you put in your mouth and not being able to stop eating even past the point of being physically ill. I am in day 7 of BLE and yesterday I felt the first burst of true energy for the first time in decades! My sleep pattern has gone to waking up multiple times during the night to sleeping through the entire night. All this after only 6 days of successful BLE. I stopped focusing on what happens tomorrow (except for planning next day’s meal) and put all my effort into today. BLE has brought me hope based on SCIENCE. Thank you Susan for all your effort in creating this program and helping those of us that have been helpless against the need for food.

Her whole schtick is to appeal to anorexics. Which is fine, they need help too. But ... you cannot treat anorexia the same way you treat overeating and binge eating.

Yes. Failing to plan is planning to fail. I think she does have an idea what it’s like to be out of control BUT, it gives her ONE focus and it’s very biased. Not very nuanced. She doesn’t know the neuroscience.

The Big Food Industry (and Big Agriculture) don't want us to know that there ARE food-like substances that are extremely harmful to most people (industrial seed oils, highly refined carbohydrates, transfats) - and that some foods and processed "foods" are disastrous for a subset of highly susceptible people... At the same time, THEY know it very well. They do extensive research to create hyper-palatable food-like substances that have huge addiction potential, even for peope with good impulse control .... "Bet you can't eat just one".
They are even great at hi-jacking vegetarians and vegans with highly processed Frankenfoods ..... and they are great at getting government subsidies for production of the raw materials ....and they are apparently also very active in affecting "Food Guidelines" from governmental bodies.
None of the problematic substances and types of foods are "food groups". Excluding them can make a lot of sense, especially for those of us with impaired impulse control / response inhibition. And even people with good impulse control can find some substances and foods so captivating that they choose abstinence instead of moderation.
I would not be surprised to learn that Big Food is subsidizing and supporting the purveyors of the message: "Everything in Moderation" is the only healthful way to eat!

I can only speak for myself ... but after I tried just two things from the first Bright Line blog, the pounds just fell off.
I eliminated sugar & flour and still ate everything else I wanted. It made perfect sense to me that these two items
are concentrated powders that cause hunger and cravings. I couldn't believe it but I wasn't hungry at all. I do eat
nutrient dense foods as often as possible, love salads loaded with good things and I have for years done a 14 to
16 hour fast pretty much everyday (I never want food in the morning, love my tea and coffee). This is not a diet, it's a
lifestyle for me. I love the way I feel after losing 10 pounds.

I think part of the problem is that the education of nutritionists is influenced by Big Ag. They are obviously not learning a lot of the things that we know to be true. I reversed mine years ago on my own because of my own study of nutrition as a nurse practitioner.

Thanks Susan…great Vlog. As a retired psychologist and someone who is grateful to finally acknowledge my food addiction, over the course of my life and career I saw so clearly that eating disordered patients I was treating were food addicted. I referred many to OE rather than nutritionists who, as you pointed out, prescribed diets that were unstructured and left too many food choices to the patient. OE helped many people I referred there but unfortunately not all (some wound up hospitalized).I only discovered BLE two years ago after I retired….it’s working for me!

The "everything in moderation" concept doesn't take addictive response into account at all. Would people who promote this suggest it to an alcoholic, drug addict, addictive gambler, etc? Of course not. The addictive response in the brain (to an addict) is the same to sugar or alcohol or an illegal drug. All of these "if your craving something just have a nibble" proponents have no concept of how the addictive brain works. So glad Susan is using her platform to educate people. Working in direct care mental health, I see a lot of switching seats on the Titanic, people using sugar and ultra processed carbs to try and feel better when they can't get their alcohol or street drug of choice. I would love to completely reform the food in mental health institutions so that when people are discharged their brains are actually healed or at least a lot better and they have a better shot at staying off drugs/alcohol.

I think it was the combination of reasoned wisdom, perspective, compassion, and focus. Susan simply let the stimulus pass, explained it compassionately, and abstained from the distraction of counterattacking, getting worked up, or even resorting to righteous worry as a means of processing criticism. The second time I used a nutritionist through my at the time health club, was a waste of $500 as it was two meetings and her giving me some paperwork to track my diet. NOT HELPFUL. Great Vlog Dr. Pierce Thompson, thank you sincerely..I wonder is this inflamed critic of you, employed by the refined sugar food industry?...BLE is the present and, more importantly, the future. BLE has the ability to deal with the obesity and food addiction pandemic of our times...I have lost my weight with you at the age of 59 yrs ...In total 6 stone..Your system has educated me like no Doctor or weight loss programme ever did or indeed came near to doing...I am somebody who has been reasonably successful in all areas of my life, with the exception of weight loss...That is ,until I stumbled upon Dr.Susan Pierce Thompson. Bright Line Eating is life changing..It's hard, really hard..in the way any addiction is painful to recover from...For me, the success of this BLE system is the education around 'the what the hell effect', 'rezoom', 'sitting with sad' as well as the comfort of being assured that nmf cravings become less intense given time...I have no interest in checking out 'the critic'...did she talk or interview any of us?...those of who are the people that can talk about SPT and BLE with integrity and experience...I doubt that she did...Like you Susan, I feel sad for this critic because she would feel better within herself if she had carried out proper, balanced research. For most of us, in your community, we know how you brilliantly educate us with your science based facts and personal experience.. This journey takes grit, self belief along with that deep knowing that we are on the right path to full recovery from the intense pull of refined sugar, flour and their byproducts. Keep going Susan..We will support you. The world needs you,in particular the children of this generation...As always, my sincere gratitude to you and your Team...🙏🌻☀️

Thank you for the vlog and especially for the loving attitude you exude when you talk of others - including those that bash you and BLE. I am a natural sceptic and poo pooed the idea of giving up sugar and flour - way too extreme I thought. But, the more I looked into the current research, the more it became obvious that even I (a pastry chef for most of my adult life) might need an "extreme" intervention. Almost a year into it, now it's the most natural thing in the world. BTW - my mastermind group decided to use our covid masks if we needed something while cooking - that way we don't waste our scotch tape.

I have much less pain in my knees. I can walk further, stand longer. My husband joined me after two months and has also lost 31 pounds, too. He feels better than he has in years. I did watch this woman's video and the main thing it did for me was to confirm for me that Bright Line Eating works. There is so much support that you have built into this program that I have no idea what this woman is talking about. I feel badly that you had to rebut her awful critique. She obviously did not ask any successful BLE member how they feel about the program, and there are many BLE members she could have asked. I responded to her incorrect synopsis when I read it and have heard nothing back yet. Thank you for the VLOG this week. I know the truth as many others do. There was no need to respond to this woman. I just came across this vlog today and needed to comment.
I have been on a rollercoaster ride all my life with food. I am a food addict. I knew this before I even discovered your program. In fact, just recently I have been looking for 12 step programs in my area. I heard about Bright Lines Eating a few days ago through someone I started to follow on social media. Of course, being on every diet program out there and even going to the extreme of having gastric surgery, I am skeptical of all new programs. So, I looked up your program and what it entailed. Then I looked up the reviews about your program. In fact, I think I ran across the video of the nutritionist you are speaking about because I remember the tape over your mouth comment she made. The funny thing is that even after I read her horrible review my response was, she just doesn't get it. She has never dealt with an addiction. So. I went ahead and bought your book. I finished reading it yesterday, actually I read it in one day. Anyhow, I just want to say thank you, finally someone gets it!!! I made my commitment day and I will be starting very soon. I am looking forward to Bright Lines in my future. 😊

Oh Susan, your heart is amazing. Love is the answer and their reaction to you and what we are doing has nothing to do with us. Every time I find myself getting really worked up about something someone says, I pause and say, "hmmm, are they saying something that I really need to hear and just do not want to face?" Many times, the answer is yes!

I’m one of those who found that person’s video first when I started researching BLE. Luckily her tone turned me off SO MUCH! She clearly doesn’t have susceptibility to food addiction and it shows. Her words were cruel and dismissive to people like us and the pain we experience. She was so sanctimonious. And it never fails to surprise me how terrified obese people are of restrictive eating disorders - When they should be afraid of food addiction and being obese. My husband has NO food addictions and is so healthy and fit. But he has rules around food. He NEVER touched fast food - ever. In 15 years I’ve known him he’s had it twice and was because it was only thing offered to us when meeting with family. He doesn’t eat outside his fasting window or late at night. He doesn’t order burgers or pizza. He has rules against these kinds of food. And he is not disordered or conflicted at all. He’s the healthiest member of our family. These people have lost sight of the realities of the processed food industry and what it’s doing to our brains.

Oh boy! You're so right... that entire video is mean, rude, cheap, lazy, judgemental, inciting, and most importantly, wrong. I watched the video because I promote Bright Line Eating on my TH-cam channel. I felt the need to hear what she had to say. She didn't say much of anything... beyond insults, cuss words, and sarcasm. It is so fascinating witnessing people NOT MAKE THE CONNECTION that sugar and flour are NOT FOODS.
I love how you (Susan) say we've got to do our own research. Those people (her and all the people chiming in in the comments below her video) still have lots of research to do.
Not that you need it (CLEARLY you have a healthy perspective on this!)... but I'd like to offer a word of encouragement.
    1) She wouldn't have made that video had your book sold 10 copies. You are a big enough thorn in her side that she felt the need to address Bright Line Eating!
    2) She totally just used her large platform to get your name out there. I'm positive there will be people that are now curious enough to check out this whole BLE thing on their own. And they'll hear what I heard that drew me RIGHT IN.
    3) When Paul (of the New Testament) was in prison, writing to the church of the Philippi, he mentioned in his letter that there were people preaching the gospel with ill intentions and selfish ambition. They were preaching out of envy and rivalry. But Paul says in Philipians 1:18 - "But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice." Ill intent and all, that woman not only spoke your name and gave details on Bright Line Eating, but she even gave YOU air time on her channel. And because of this we can rejoice. 😄
Thank you for helping me to SEE sugar and flour for what they are. And for what they are NOT. And they are NOT food.
Keep up the good work. 👊🏻
    Emily ❤️

There are a lot of people out there who have no clue and are criticizing Brightline Eating. They don't know what they are talking about! I had serious food issues. I couldn't even tell when I was full. Brightline fixed that. No snacks, no cravings, and my sugar level stays even. No more fuzzy thinking due to sugar levels dropping. Life is so much better.

This was perfect timing for me. I was just listening, reading, and learning more about conscious eating. Wanting to convince myself that would work. Being 10 on the susceptibility scale I've done lots of experiments. It was good for me to hear that food addiction is real. Wish it weren't, but here I am... Needing BLE and making sure I keep my approach with self-compassion and love.

BLE makes sense! I've tried a lot but this way of eating works for me, finally! And I can fully subscribe the scientific basis of it. Real food which is pure and tasy, no higly processed stuff or shakes and bars! The prepping of meals works well because I used to make wrong choices at the end of the day when I became tired and then couldn't stop eating. The restless feeling between meals: it's gone now! Whatever criticasters might say: I recommend this way of eating (and I'm a Dutch physician working at the public health service).

Great Susan. I just started looking up BLE information (a year later from this video) and did see one of these "nutritionists" content. I was pretty surprised at the immaturity and unprofessionalism displayed and thought that they must be a troll, designed to keep people confused and addicted for some nefarious purpose (shorting bets with social impact blockchain trading anyone?). I fall into the category of addicted eating, and 12 step sobriety for alcohol addiction, and know that "rules" are really important to retrain the brain. Thanks for comments. Personally I love the deep dive science, please share more! Blessings.

So sorry Susan, I had already paused your video and already sought out the video of the "nutritionist" to see what drivel she was spouting before I got to the part when you asked us not too. I can only concur with you that people who have never had a problem with food to the degree that I do would listen to her and think that she makes sense. Also anyone who has to use the F word frequently to make her point just emphasizes her ignorance.

And that she so closely describes my experience with addiction. So just let the criticism wash over you, and don't worry about it. For those of us who have these brains, we know the reality!

For some of us, removing all food rules, including our bright lines, and to eat every food in moderation to ''fullness'' is a bit like telling a serial killer to just kill in moderation until he feels satisfied, only our bend is to self-harm in regards to our own mental, emotional and physical well-being. I tried intuitive eating, to my detriment. ''Eat candy bars as much as you want and soon enough you will be tired of candy bars and you'll want healthy foods instead.'' I chose my favorite candy bar and watched my weight escalate and my hopelessness surge. There simply IS no intuitive moderation for those of us high on the susceptibilty scale. My hard-wired intuition is one that compelled me for nearly five decades to binge myself into near-oblivion. Now I KNOW when enough food is enough, because my food is planned, weighed, measured, eaten with a calm and determined purpose and enjoyed without one iota of guilt, regret or remorse. The safety rails of my BLE experience have opened up an entirely new life, free of compulsive food thoughts, an over-whelming desire to eat until I was in pain, to wait for the pain to ease off and then go again, again, again.... Forced to live in a body that never truly felt like my own, that never represented who I am inside was like a nightmare that I never fully woke up from. Killing myself on the installment plan was not freedom, it was torture of the worst kind. I could not be more grateful to Susan Peirce Thompson for allowing herself to be used as a powerful source for good for so many caught in the trap of food addiction. For those of us who ''get it'' from this perspective and want a way out that works, Bright Line Eating is the best place where we can heal and keep ourselves safe from our twisted intuition.

There’s also a psychologist who is critical of the program but she took the perspective of the ongoing financial commitment members were asked to make. As with anything you will find eminently qualified experts whose opinions differ on a range of topics. However at the end of the day you need to do what works for you and just know that some will agree with you and some won’t.

I have to say, Susan. I don''t remember reading that you put tape on your mouth..so I was not influenced by your suggestion. However, a few times I have put tape on my mouth and it has really helped me to overcome the overwhelm of wanting to graze unconsciously. It helps me to become grounded and focused internally instead of wanting to reach " öut" . It is a great tool ! The only complaint I have is I need to find a tape that does not hurt the skin on removal . Maybe you consider it in your tool kit for sale .... for every journal bought you get a free skin friendly roll of tape .?LOL

People really do not understand food addiction. Even my husband who’s been sober from alcohol for 12 years, when I told him I need to completely quit sugar and flower, he said can’t you just eat a little bit. My face must have been appalled and he quickly said ok 😂 So we started talking about what if we gave alcoholics the same advice we give food addicts. Just put your liquor in a smaller cup, only drink on cheat days, drink in moderation… it’s absurd.

I love BLE and shared what I have learned from you with at least 5 of my friends. Three of these friends have also embraced BLE. All of them have been successful and are committed. I do believe BLE has literally saved the life of one of my friends. She had been obese most of her life and now has come to terms with her eating obsession and is on her way to a healthy way of life. I am so grateful for this eating plan and the science behind it. I too have been successful and was more concerned with health than weight. The weight did come off but my health improved and my every thought is not about food anymore. Thank you Susan very much.

If intuitive eating worked - why are so many in society overweight!!!!!????? Most people think they're just listening to their hunger!!!!!
In our current food environment "listening to your body" just DOESN"T WORK when the food industry makes things so highly highly palatable. I lost so much respect for this "person" when they clearly don't see or acknowledge the data on how healthy a whole food plant based diet is. Anyone who denies that is simple part of "food culture" if you ask me.
The way she did it was absolutely DISGUSTING and she should be ashamed of herself. I'm convinced it was done purely to get views. I hate that I bothered to watch her opinion.
Bright line DOES bring peace with food. It DOES help calm the mind and get on with living!

Many of us already know that many so-called experts are not really so. All I know is that BLE worked for me, still does, changed my life in a positive way, without pills, diets, or visits to specialists, many of whom never had much nutritional experience or training. There will always be naysayers, deniers, jealous challengers to lifestyle advocates. We are seeing this everyday with politics, public health measures, environmental crises, as well as nutrition.
